Western Kentucky needs to improve its shooting
The Western Kentucky Hilltoppers lost the opening game of this tournament by five points to Vanderbilt, while shooting 37% overall and 32% from 3-point territory. Teagan Moore scored 24 points to lead Western Kentucky, while Cam Haffner was second with 18 points. Bryant Selebangue came off the bench to grab a team-high 9 rebounds for Western Kentucky, and Moore was the top playmaker with five assists in the loss.
Before Wednesday's tournament game, Moore had been the leading scorer for Western Kentucky through the 1st five games of the regular season, averaging 18.2 points and also grabbing the most rebounds per game at 6.0. Grant Newell was the second leading scorer for Western Kentucky, averaging 14.8 points per game, but in Wednesday's loss, he did not score. The Hilltoppers are averaging 90.3 points, 41.5 rebounds, 13.8 assists, 11.0 steals, and 2.5 blocked shots per game, while turning the ball over only nine times per contest.
USF needs to improve on the boards
The South Florida Bulls were held to 39% shooting overall and a disappointing 14% from three-point territory in their opening game loss in the tournament to VCU on Wednesday. South Florida made just two of its 14 3-point attempts. South Florida held VCU to 39% shooting as well, but allowed the Rams to shoot 30% from 3-point territory, which in the end was a big difference. South Florida was beat up on the boards as well, allowing 47 rebounds by VCU to only 39 for the Bulls. The Bulls gave VCU 16-second looks as the Rams grabbed 16 offensive boards.
In Wednesday's loss, the leading scorer for South Florida was Izaiyah Nelson with 16 points, while Josh Omojafo scored 14 and CJ Brown added 11. Nelson was the leading rebounder with 12, and the leader in assists was Brown with five. South Florida has to make quick improvements on its rebounding and must shoot better from the perimeter; otherwise, the Bulls will lose to Western Kentucky on Thursday.
WKY vs. USF Pick
Spread Pick for Western Kentucky vs. USF
-
USF to cover (4 units)
The South Florida Bulls lost by only 12 points to VCU on Wednesday, even though the Bulls made just two of 14 3-point attempts and were out-rebounded 47-39. The Bulls are not likely to face the defense against Western Kentucky that they did in Wednesday's loss to VCU; therefore, South Florida must shoot better from the perimeter and hit the glass with all they have to start transitions on offense and give Western Kentucky just one look at the hoop. South Florida has covered the spread in three of its first six games of the season. Western Kentucky has covered the spread in three of its first four games with a betting line, but gave plenty of effort in a 5-point loss to Vanderbilt, and will not bounce back with a strong effort on Thursday, as Wednesday's loss will carry over to Thursday.
Over/Under Pick for Western Ky vs. USF
-
Over (4 units)
The opening game of the tournament for South Florida ended under, but most of that was due to the Bulls facing a tough VCU defense, and that will not occur on Thursday when playing against Western Kentucky. The total has finished over in four of South Florida's first six games this season. South Florida scored 95 or more points in each of its previous three games before losing to VCU.
