Wisconsin vs Ohio State Key Matchups and Handicap

Wisconsin

Wisconsin comes into Columbus ranked No. 24 and sitting in a strong spot in the Big Ten race. The Badgers are 18-7 overall and 10-4 in conference play, and they have the type of roster that travels well. The biggest edge Wisconsin has in this game is stability. There are no injuries listed for the Badgers, and that matters when you are laying a short number on the road.

Wisconsin’s identity is steady guard play and efficiency. John Blackwell and Nick Boyd headline a backcourt that can score at all three levels, and the Badgers are comfortable playing either style. If the game turns into a track meet, they can score. If the game tightens into half-court possessions late, Wisconsin is still comfortable because it tends to get quality shots and execute cleanly.

This matchup also has recent history. These teams played on January 31, and Wisconsin pulled away late for a 92-82 win in Madison. That game is important because it showed how quickly this matchup can turn into a runs game if Ohio State loses focus on the perimeter for even a few possessions.

Ohio State

Ohio State enters 16-9 overall and 8-6 in the Big Ten, and the Buckeyes are still trying to stack quality wins down the stretch. They are coming off a 70-66 neutral-site loss to No. 15 Virginia, a game that was a grinder but still featured star-level shot-making from Bruce Thornton, who scored 28 points.

Thornton is the key to everything Ohio State wants to do, and his role only grows because of the injury report. Guard John Mobley Jr. is out with a hand injury, and he is the Buckeyes’ second-leading scorer. Without Mobley, Ohio State loses a major creator who can ease Thornton’s burden, initiate early offense, and punish switches.

The Buckeyes also have frontcourt uncertainty with Brandon Noel listed questionable with a foot injury. Even if Noel plays, any limitation matters on the glass and in rim protection.

Wisconsin vs Ohio State

The betting decision comes down to pace and depth. The total is still sitting high, but with Mobley out, Ohio State can bog down into Thornton isolations. That often leads to longer possessions and fewer clean looks, especially late.

That is why I lean Ohio State plus the points and the under. The Buckeyes have home energy, and Thornton is capable of keeping this game within one possession even if the offense is not perfect. At the same time, the missing shot creation should reduce Ohio State’s overall efficiency and push this game just below the number.

  • Wisconsin won the first meeting 92-82 on January 31.
  • Wisconsin is 18-7 overall and 10-4 in Big Ten play.
  • Ohio State is 16-9 overall and 8-6 in Big Ten play.
  • Ohio State is coming off a 70-66 loss to Virginia.
  • Bruce Thornton scored 28 points in Ohio State’s last game.
  • The spread has stayed tight around Wisconsin -1.5.
  • The total has dropped from 158.5 to 157.5.
  • Public betting shows Wisconsin taking 93 percent of tickets in the latest update.
  • Earlier public splits showed Ohio State taking 75 percent of tickets and 66 percent of money.

Final Score Prediction

  • Projected Final Score: Wisconsin 78, Ohio State 77

How to Bet

This is the type of game where the number is small enough that you can bet the side you believe in without needing a perfect script. I am taking Ohio State because the Buckeyes are at home, the spread gives me points in a one-possession window, and Bruce Thornton has the scoring ceiling to keep this tight.

On the total, I prefer the under because Mobley being out changes the structure of Ohio State’s offense. That can mean more Thornton isolations and fewer easy looks, which is usually good for an under in the high 150s.
