Hoyas off to a strong start
Georgetown continues to show signs of a program moving in the right direction after several down years. Opening Big East play with a 78-69 road win over Marquette was a significant early-season statement, especially given how the Hoyas won the game. Georgetown made just four three-pointers but controlled the paint, dominated the glass, and consistently got to the free-throw line. That physical identity has been a theme early this season.

The Hoyas did suffer an early setback with 7-foot-1 center Vince Iwuchukwu sidelined after averaging 11.8 points over the first four games, but the roster remains balanced. Guards Malik Mack (14.6 ppg, 4.5 apg) and KJ Lewis (14.2 ppg, 5.6 rpg) anchor the offense, while Georgetown ranks first nationally in turnover rate on offense.
Overall, Georgetown is 94th in adjusted offensive efficiency according to KenPom. On the defensive end, the Hoyas are 108th.
Xavier off an embarrassing loss
Xavier’s five-game winning streak came to an abrupt and embarrassing end in a 98-57 home loss to Creighton, a game in which the Musketeers were outclassed in nearly every phase. Xavier was outshot 60% to 36%, struggled to finish at the rim, and was consistently beaten in transition and points in the paint. That performance highlighted some lingering offensive concerns, especially against physical, well-coached defenses.
The Musketeers rank just 121st nationally in adjusted offensive efficiency, relying more on pace than shot-making to generate points. While Xavier moves the ball well and is fifth best in turnover percentage on offense, their interior scoring and free-throw production remain issues. Tre Carroll leads the team with 16.1 points per game, while Filip contributes 7.1 rebounds and 8.6 points, but Xavier’s lack of consistent scoring options was exposed against Creighton.
Defensively, the Musketeers are respectable, coming in 94th according to KenPom, but this matchup against Georgetown will present a difficult test inside.
Georgetown vs Xavier Predictions
Hoyas vs. Musketeers ATS Pick:
- Hoyas to Cover (4 units)
Georgetown is in a good position to build on its Big East-opening win and cover at home. Xavier has been excellent in ball security, but the Hoyas do it even better. Georgetown is the more physical team and should be confident after picking up a road win over Marquette. I don't have confidence in Xavier coming off a humiliating 41-point loss to Creighton.
Georgetown doesn’t rely on the three, instead leaning on efficient two-point scoring and free throws, areas where Xavier’s defense has been vulnerable. Malik Mack and KJ Lewis give the Hoyas steady guard play, while Georgetown’s size helps neutralize Xavier’s offense inside.
The Hoyas should be able to dictate tempo and cover the number at Capital One Arena.
Hoyas vs. Musketeers Total Pick:
- Under (4 units)
I expect this game to be more of a grind than a shootout. Both of these teams rank in the nation’s top five at protecting the ball, which should limit the fast-break and transition scoring opportunities. Georgetown will also further slow the pace at home and make life difficult for an Xavier offense that struggles in half-court settings. With the Hoyas' offense looking to get to the line and rarely taking threes, I like the under.
