Wildcats Will Go Bowling

The Arizona Wildcats have had a solid season; they are 8-3, and their losses came against strong opponents as they have only gone down to #14 Iowa State, #18 BYU and Houston over the course of their season. Unfortunately for Arizona, they are already eliminated from the possibility of playing in the Big 12 Championship, which means a shot at the College Football Playoff is likely gone. In their last game, quarterback Noah Fifita had 183 passing yards and a touchdown in their win over Baylor, marking their fourth consecutive win coming into this week.

Fifita is their athletic 5'10 quarterback. He served a redshirt season when he showed up on campus four years ago, but has been their starter in each of the past three seasons since then. He passed for over 2,800 yards in each of their last two seasons, and has 2,677 passing yards this season with a strong 25-5 TD-INT ratio. Fifita is mobile, but does not rely on his rushing attack as he has 131 yards on the ground this year. Their top running back has been Ismail Mahdi, the senior back has 732 yards and four rushing touchdowns on the season to lead the team.

Kris Hutson has been their top wideout. He is a 5'11 senior with 50 catches for 645 yards and four touchdowns. Tre Spivey is a bigger target; the 6'4 sophomore only has 17 catches on the year, but six went for touchdowns. Arizona has 21 sacks on the season, led by linebacker Chase Kennedy with four. Their defensive unit has added another 16 interceptions, with Jay'Vion Cole leading the way out of the secondary with four.

Injury Report for Arizona:

  • Questionable: RB Quincy Craig (333 yards)

Sun Devils Keep Fighting

The Arizona State Sun Devils were one of the surprise entries to the College Football Playoff last season, and hope to do the same here. Realistically, they will not get in, but the door is not shut as they still mathematically have a chance to advance to the Big 12 Championship Game, and could force their way into the bracket. They have won each of their last three, with wins over Iowa State, West Virginia and Colorado coming into this one. In the Colorado game, Raleek Brown rushed for 255 yards and a touchdown in the win.

Brown has been one of the best backs in the Big 12, he has already topped 1,000 yards on the season with his total sitting at 1,078 with four touchdowns. Brown transferred over from USC where he was not getting the playing time he desired, and is proving his worth with his new team this year. The Sun Devils are led by Jeff Sims at quarterback, as Sam Leavitt suffered a season ending injury to his foot earlier this year. Sims is a 6'4 senior who has been playing college football since 2020 with Georgia Tech, he has 772 passing yards with a 7-2 TD-INT ratio this season.

Jordyn Tyson has been the top pass catcher for Arizona State this season, the 6'2 junior has 59 grabs for 689 yards and eight touchdowns. Their defense has 31 sacks, led by linebacker Keyshaun Elliott with seven. The team has seven interceptions, with no player getting more than two on the year.

Arizona vs. Arizona State Picks and Predictions

Spread pick for Arizona vs. Arizona State

  • Arizona -1.5 (5 units)

The Wildcats are slight favorites here, but lets dig into the reason why this is the case. Arizona State absolutely smoked Arizona last season, winning 49-7. Yes, Cam Skattebo was on that Arizona State team, but he does not make up a 42-point difference. Also, Arizona State should have more motivation here, they still have a chance at the Big 12 Championship, while Arizona does not. All of these facts are true, yet Arizona is still listed as a small favorite on the road? Vegas is begging people to take the Sun Devils, which means they know Arizona will perform well here. The Wildcats have a veteran quarterback in Fifita, while Arizona State is on their backup. The Wildcats win here easily.

Take Arizona to win and cover.

Over/Under Pick for Arizona vs. Arizona State

  • Under 48.5 (4 units)

Rivalry game or not, this one is still going under the total, as these teams have been going under all season, and the Sun Devils are on their backup quarterback. Arizona State lost Leavitt, he was their unquestioned starter for the year at QB, now they are going to Sims who is a journeyman who has played with multiple programs over the past five years without finding a ton of success. Arizona is on the road with the stronger offense, they will control the ball here which will run time off the clock. The Sun Devils went under in seven of eight games in the middle of the season, while Arizona has gone under in each of their last three.

Take the under.
