Arizona Misses Big Opportunity
The Arizona Wildcats just had a chance to knock off a top 25 team in front of their home crowd in exciting fashion, but fell in the second overtime, going down 33-27 to BYU. The teams exchanged field goals in the first overtime, but BYU was able to punch in one more touchdown in the second period, while Arizona came up short. They also took a loss against #14 Iowa State in conference play, with their only league win coming over Oklahoma State. In their loss against BYU, Noah Fifita had 219 passing yards and two touchdowns in the near loss.
Fifita is their 5'10 junior quarterback, and he has been their starter since his freshman year with the Wildcats. So far this season he has 1,560 passing yards with a 62.7% completion percentage to go with his 15-4 TD-INT ratio. He had a big passing game against Oklahoma State, where he went for 376 passing yards and five touchdowns. Fifita does not look to run much; he has just 60 rush yards on the season. Their top tailback is Ismail Mahdi, the speed back is just 5'9 and 188 pounds, but has run for 403 yards and a touchdown so far this year.
Javin Whatley is their top pass catcher, the 5'10 receiver is in his senior season and has 25 catches for 328 yards to go with three touchdowns. Whatley just transferred over from Chattanooga, where he played the last three seasons. Their defense has 14 sacks and nine interceptions on the season. Their sack leader is senior linebacker Riley Wilson with three.

Cougars Cruise on the Road
The Houston Cougars made life look easy on the road last week at Oklahoma State, as they took home a 22-point victory after leading by 14 at halftime. Houston is now 2-1 in conference play, but took a big loss against #11 Texas Tech, falling 35-11. The Tech game was one of their best shots to make a strong impression on the nation, because they do not have any ranked opponents remaining on their schedule as of this week. In the win over Oklahoma State, Conner Weigman threw for 306 yards and two touchdowns in the victory.
If the name Conner Weigman sounds familiar, it is because he has started games over the past three years for Texas A&M. So far this season, the 6'3 quarterback has passed for 1,216 yards to go with his 10-2 TD-INT ratio. He has been the focal point of their offense, as he has also rushed for 145 yards and five scores on the ground. He is not their leading rusher, as Dean Connors is way out in front with 438 yards on the ground. Connors transferred in after a successful career at Rice, and the senior has four touchdowns so far for the Cougars.
Amare Thomas is their best receiver, the 6'0 junior has 23 catches for 441 yards and two touchdowns, he is another transfer as he played with UAB last season. Tanner Koziol is a big target, the 6'7 and 240 pound tight end has added another 30 catches for 310 yards and two scores. The defense has combined for 13 sacks and six interceptions on the season.
Arizona vs. Houston Prediction and Picks
Spread pick pick for Arizona vs. Houston
- Arizona -1.5 (5 units)
This is a follow-the-money play, as sometimes the sharps in Vegas know more than we do, and they are the one with the deep enough pockets to move the spread. This was not a simply half point move, the spread moved by three points as Houston opened as 1.5 favorites, but are now listed as 1.5-point dogs. The oddsmakers are trying to make the bet for Houston look enticing, getting points at home with a better record, but this one smells off. Arizona has an experienced quarterback, as Fifita has been starting games for them over the past three seasons. Arizona fought hard against BYU, and will keep the same belief going here as they pull out a win on the road.
Take Arizona to win and cover.
Over/Under Pick for Arizona vs. Houston
- Over 48.5 (4 units)
This spread seems as if it should be higher, but for this bet I am not going to try to outsmart the books. The over is the smart play here, as these teams went over 48.5 in all of their conference games this season. The high scoring will continue as both teams have quarterbacks with experience who have played in big games over their careers. Arizona scored 27 on the strong BYU defense, and 41 in the previous week against OK State. Houston is coming off a 39 point game against the same OK State squad, and their roster will gel more every game as the transfers gain chemistry. This will be a high scoring battle.
Take the over.
