Arkansas Looking to Spring Upset on the Road

Arkansas started the year 2-0 but their blowout loss at home against #22 Notre Dame marked a third straight defeat and the end of the Sam Pittman era. In his stead, at least on an interim basis, is Bobby Petrino, a name many are familiar with, having coached the ā€˜Hogs to a 34-17 mark between 2008-11. This squad enters this week 2-3 overall and 0-1 in SEC play. Against Notre Dame, Arkansas had the game’s opening score with a field goal, trailed 14-3 after one quarter and got within 14-10 with 11:19 to play in the first half before the wheels fell off. The Razorbacks were outscored 28-3 the rest of the half to trail 42-13 and didn’t score after intermission en route to the blowout. Arkansas was clobbered 641-365 in total offense, gave up 32 first downs while recording 15, lost time of possession by a 32:47 to 27:13 margin and committed the game’s two turnovers.

The Razorbacks enter this game 18th in the nation in passing offense as they average 300.8 yards per game through the air while they are tied for 21st in rushing offense by racking up 213.8 yards per contest on the ground this season. Arkansas is 22nd in the FBS in scoring offense with an average of 37.4 points per game, while they are 110th in scoring defense as they give up 30 points a contest this year. Taylen Green is 98 of 158 passing for 1,398 yards with 12 touchdowns and five interceptions. He leads the team in rushing with 54 carries for 441 yards and two scores. KJ Jackson (five of seven, 106 yards, TD, 21 rush yards, TD) and Trever Jackson (zero of one) have seen limited action. Mike Washington Jr. is the anchor in the ground game as he has 61 carries for 393 yards and four scores on the year. Rodney Hill (seven carries, 37 yards) and Braylen Russell (32 carries, 165 yards, three TD) have been useful in short bursts. In the passing game, O’Mega Blake leads the team with 30 catches for 399 yards and three scores on the year. Tight end Rohan Jones (six catches, 220 yards, two TD), Raylen Sharpe (14 receptions, 173 yards, two TD), Jalen Brown (12 grabs, 167 yards, two TD), Jaden Platt (nine receptions, 166 yards) and CJ Brown (11 catches, 142 yards, two TD) are all over 125 yards receiving this season. Scott Starzyk has hit all 25 extra point attempts and stands four of six on field goal attempts with a long of 53 on the year.

Jalen Brown left the Notre Dame game with a leg injury and is questionable here.

Vols Seeking Third Straight Win

Tennessee comes in off a bye after outlasting Mississippi State in Starkville in overtime in their previous game. The Volunteers improved to 4-1 overall and stand 1-1 in SEC action as they look for a third straight win ahead of a trip to Tuscaloosa next week to face #8 Alabama. Against Mississippi State, Tennessee was in a seesaw game where neither team led by more than seven. The Volunteers tied the game with 1:55 to play in regulation and scored on the first play of overtime. Tennessee’s defense stopped Mississippi State’s ensuing drive on downs to secure the win. The Volunteers owned a 471-378 edge in total offense and picked up 24 first downs while allowing 23 in the game. Those numbers offset the fact that Tennessee turned the ball over three times while forcing a pair of takeaways and lost time of possession by a 32:23 to 27:37 margin. Both Volunteers’ takeaways turned into points as they recorded a pick-six and a scoop-six in the game.

The Volunteers are good offensively this season as they are 4th in passing offense as they averaging 337.2 yards per game through the air. Tennessee is 33rd in rushing offense as they put up an average of 199.2 yards per contest on the ground. The Volunteers are 1st of the 136 FBS teams to take the field this season in scoring offense as they average 51 points per contest. Tennessee is 103rd in scoring defense as they allowed an average of 29 points a contest. Joey Aguilar has hit 102 of 157 passes for 1,459 yards with 13 scores against five interceptions while adding 58 yards plus two scores on the ground on the year. George MacIntyre (six of seven, 52 yards) and Jake Merklinger (12 of 22, 175 yards, two TD, 16 rush yards) are next in line on the depth chart. Star Thomas is second on the team with 52 carries for 305 yards and four scores this season. DeSean Bishop (49 carries, 335 yards, four TD), Peyton Lewis (35 carries, 167 yards, three TD), Daune Morris (18 carries, 88 yards, TD) and Justin Baker (12 carries, 37 yards) have been efficient sharing the load. Chris Brazzell II leads the team with 31 receptions for 531 yards plus seven scores this season. Mike Matthews (22 catches, 370 yards, two TD), Braylon Staley (25 grabs, 322 yards, two TD) and tight end Miles Kitselman (14 receptions, 148 yards, TD) are the only players with more than 125 receiving yards this season. Max Gilbert has connected on all 30 extra point attempts and eight of 10 field goal attempts with a long of 53 this season. Josh Turbyville has hit all three extra point attempts while not attempting a field goal on the year.

There are no major injury concerns on the report for Tennessee. Morris (undisclosed) is questionable but he is fourth on the depth chart at running back.

Arkansas vs. Tennessee Pick

Spread Pick for Arkansas vs. Tennessee

  • Tennessee -12.5 (4 units)

Arkansas may have made a coaching change, but it’s hard to pin the blame solely on Pittman for the problems, just as it’s tough to say Petrino will be a cure. The Razorbacks have struggled on the defensive side of the ball, surrendering 168 yards per game and 11 scores on the ground this season. Tennessee can light you up via the air or the ground and they lead the nation in scoring offense this year. Both teams are rested and Tennessee is out to head into Tuscaloosa with momentum. Arkansas doesn’t have the firepower defensively to slow Aguilar and company, while the offense can’t keep pace. Tennessee wins this one convincingly for the Rocky Top fans.

Over/Under Pick for Arkansas vs. Tennessee

  • Over 68.5 (4 units)

Two things we know for sure about these teams are that they can pile up points by the truckload and that they do have some difficulty stopping the opposition. Arkansas comes into this game having gone over the mark in four of its five games this season. They scored at least 31 points in each of their first four games before being slowed by Notre Dame. Meanwhile, Tennessee has posted five consecutive overs on the season and cracked the 40-point mark in each of them. Nine straight games for the Volunteers have gone over the mark and they scorched a solid Georgia squad for 41 points last month in an OT loss. Seeing that Arkansas is no match for Georgia, it’s hard to see them slowing the Volunteers’ offense. As a result, roll with the over in this contest.
