Arkansas State Looking for Upset Win
Arkansas State picked up a home win in their season opener as it took down Southeast Missouri State last week. The Red Wolves get to travel within the state, but traveling to take on an SEC opponent on the road is a tough challenge. Arkansas State was even at seven after one quarter and trailed 10-7 early in the second quarter before taking charge. The Red Wolves reeled off 35 unanswered points to take a 42-10 edge before cruising home to the win. Arkansas State owned a 492-364 advantage in total offense, picked up 25 first downs while allowing 20 and held a 30:52 to 29:08 edge in time of possession in the game. Each team committed one turnover in the contest.
Jaylen Raynor carved things up in the opener, completing 26 of 32 passes for 345 yards and three scores in the win. He added four carries for 17 yards on the ground. Devin Spencer led the ground game with three carries for 42 yards plus a score. Kenyon Clay (15 carries, 41 yards, TD) and Ja’Quez Cross (eight carries, 36 yards, TD) also found the end zone in the game. Chauncy Cobb (85 yards) and Cross (33 yards, TD) each reeled in five passes for Arkansas State in the win. Jaylen Bonnelli (45 yards, TD) and Tyler Fortenberry (23 yards) both had four receptions. Corey Rucker (two grabs, 59 yards, TD) also found the end zone in the game. Clune Van Andel hit all six extra point attempts while not attempting a field goal in the game.
Razorbacks Shooting for 2-0 Start
Arkansas opened the season with an emphatic demolition of Alabama A&M at home and now look to down an in-state rival. The Razorbacks are intent on a strong start before taking on #20 Ole Miss in Oxford next Saturday. Against Alabama A&M, Arkansas was even at seven midway through the opening quarter before pulling away in one-sided fashion. The Razorbacks scored the next 45 points and coasted to the victory. Arkansas piled up a 552-235 advantage in total offense, racked up 29 first downs while allowing 12, controlled the clock by a 33:39 to 26:21 margin and forced the two turnovers committed in the game.
Taylen Green had a monster game for Arkansas, completing 24 of 31 passes for 322 yards and six touchdowns while adding nine carries for 41 yards in the game. KJ Jackson was two of four for 36 yards plus a score while adding two carries for 15 yards. Trever Jackson misfired on his lone pass attempt. Mike Washington Jr. led the run game with nine carries for 79 yards. Braylen Russell (11 carries, 41 yards), Rodney Hilll (three carries, 13 yards) and AJ Green (three carries, 11 yards) also saw work in the run game. O’Mega Blake led the team with seven receptions for 121 yards and a score. CJ Brown (four catches, 49 yards, two TD), Jalen Brown (three grabs, 44 yards, TD), Raylen Sharpe (three catches, 41 yards, TD), Kam Shanks (three receptions, 19 yards) and Washington Jr. (two grabs, 26 yards, TD) were valuable targets in the passing game. Scott Starzyk connected on all seven extra point attempts and connected on his lone field goal attempt, which came from 53 yards.
Arkansas State vs. Arkansas Pick
Spread Pick for Arkansas State vs. Arkansas
- Arkansas Razorbacks -22.5 (4 units)
Both teams piled up points in their respective openers and will be looking to fire on all cylinders once again. We saw each team throw for more than 300 yards and score at least 40 points in week 1. Arkansas State had some defensive issues in the win over Southeast Missouri State, allowing the Redbirds to complete 72.2% of their passes for 272 yards and a pair of scores. That plays right into the strength of Arkansas, especially after Green tossed six touchdown passes against Alabama A&M. The Razorbacks are at home and they should exploit Arkansas State’s defensive weaknesses to win going away.
Over/Under Pick for Arkansas State vs. Arkansas
- Over 62 (4 units)
Arkansas State went over the total in their season-opening contest. The Red Wolves combined with Missouri State for 66 points, surpassing the number of 59.5 points set by the book. Last season, Arkansas State saw the over go 7-6 in their 13 games. Arkansas stayed under the total in their season opener against Alabama A&M, mainly thanks to their defense. The Razorbacks combined for 59 points, falling short of the 65-point mark set by the sportsbooks. Arkansas went over the total in seven of their 13 games. With Arkansas State good on offense and questionable defensively, look for Arkansas to put up 40-plus points to push this over the total.
