Rough start for Army

The Army Black Knights are coming off a great season in 2024, finishing 12-2 overall and 8-0 in the AAC. Led by quarterback and Heisman Trophy candidate Bryson Daily, the Black Knights earned a trip to the Independence Bowl. This year, with Daily graduated, the Black Knights opened their season with a 30-27 double overtime loss to Tarleton State at home on Saturday.

“Our guys are playing better, they’re improving,’’ Head coach Jeff Monken said. “Sometimes there’s some missed assignments that we’ve got to correct, and there’s far fewer of those happening right now – certainly, there were three weeks ago when we started – and that’s positive.”

Army had the lead at the half, 17-10, and again after three quarters, 24-17. Tarleton responded with a touchdown to tie the score in the fourth quarter. Army had a chance to tie it but missed a field goal late in the fourth. The two teams exchanged field goals in the first overtime before Tarleton won it with a field goal in the second overtime. Army was led by quarterback Dewayne Coleman, making just his second career start. He finished with 129 yards passing and 100 yards rushing on 24 carries, including a touchdown. He threw two interceptions in the game. Running back Hayden Reed had 88 yards and a touchdown as well. The Black Knights had 344 yards of total offense in the contest.

Army’s defense struggled to contain the ground attack of Tarleston, allowing 344 total yards, but 191 on the ground. The defense did come up with some big plays, including two sacks, one each by Kalib Fortner and Eric Ford. They couldn’t overcome three turnovers by the offense, however, giving Tarleston excellent field position on each occasion.

Key Injuries: QB Dewayne Coleman is probable.

Kansas State looks for second straight win

The Kansas State Wildcats bounced back from an opening loss to Iowa State in Ireland with a tightly fought 38-35 win over North Dakota at home on Saturday. It wasn’t easy, however, with the Wildcats needing a six-yard Avery Johnson touchdown pass to running back Joe Jackson with 42 seconds left to avoid a major upset, and a second straight loss.

"If you give teams life, they're going to stick around the whole time," K-State head coach Chris Klieman said. "I told the guys, you're never assured of anything. You're never given anything. You never deserve anything. You've got to earn everything you have.

"This new era of college football, nobody knows what teams have. Nobody knows how good teams are or how much they've improved through improved players or improved staffs. I knew we were playing a good football team."

The game was a back-and-forth tussle throughout, with K-State having to hold off North Dakota in the final moments to hang on for victory. Johnson had a career game for the Wildcats. He finished 28-of-43 for 318 yards and three touchdowns. He also rushed for 43 yards in an all-around effort. Wide receiver Jayce Brown had a career-high 12 catches for 109 yards and a touchdown. Jerand Bradley added five catches for 46 yards. Running back Devon Rice rushed for two touchdowns, both in the 3rd quarter. Overall, the Wildcats had 461 yards of total offense.

The Wildcats’ defense allowed 354 yards of total offense, including 252 through the air. Linebacker Austin Romaine led the team with 10 tackles. Tobi Osunsomi had six tackles and a sack for the Wildcats. He also recovered a fumble for the game’s only turnover. Edge rusher Cody Stufflebean had two sacks in the contest.

Key Injuries: TE Linkon Cure, RB Dylan Edwards, TE Andrew Metzger, PK Cub Patton, WR Larry Porter IV, and K Leyton Simmering are all questionable.

Spread Pick for Army vs. Kansas State

  • Army +17.5 (4 units)

This isn’t a time to jump off the bandwagon of either team in Saturday night’s matchup. Army comes in after dropping their home opener in double overtime. The reality of that game is that the Black Knights shot themselves in the foot with foolish turnovers. It mitigated the big advantage they usually have, time of possession. Despite the turnovers, they still led the T.O.P. battle and had a chance to win the game in regulation. For Kansas State, the team certainly can be excused for being slightly fatigued following the trip to Ireland the previous weekend. It showed most prominently on the defensive end, allowing North Dakota to go up and down the field. In this matchup, expect fewer fireworks and more contained play. The Black Knights will try and control tempo with a dominant ground game, and the Wildcats will try to exploit Army’s secondary and limit their ground attack. Ultimately, the Wildcats will win this game at home. They have too many weapons to take down a game, but a less talented Army defense. The Black Knights will keep it close, however, choosing to pound the ball into the ground and limit the possessions for the explosive Wildcats. Scoop up those points in this matchup and watch Army slow this game to a crawl.

Take Army +17.5

Over/Under Pick for Army vs. Kansas State

  • Under 46.5 (4 units)

I like Army with the points, and that means I’m leaning toward the under as well. If this turns into a track meet, the game will get away from Army very quickly. They need to dominate time of possession, limiting the chances for Johnson and the Wildcats’ pass game. They’ll also have to limit turnovers, after committing three last week. Discipline is the name of the game at West Point, and they’ll find it again on Saturday.

Take the under.
