Boston College Seeks to Beat Spartans for Third Straight Time

Boston College obliterated Fordham at home in their season opener to start year two of the Bill O’Brien era on a positive note. The Eagles now look to go on the road to take down a power conference foe as they look to go 2-0 on the season. Against Fordham, Boston College went down the field and scored on the opening drive and never looked back. The Eagles were up 14-3 after the opening quarter and 21-3 at the half before blowing the Rams out 45-7 in the second half en route to the win. Boston College rolled up a 555-168 edge in total offense, piled up 26 first downs while allowing 13, controlled the clock by a 34:05 to 25:55 margin and forced the game’s lone turnover.

Dylan Lonergan completed 26 of 34 passes for 268 yards and four touchdowns in the victory. Grayson James hit all five of his throws for 190 yards and a score in relief. Turbo Richardson led the ground game with 16 carries for 48 yards and a score. Jordan McDonald (six carries, 20 yards) and Anthony Ferrucci (four carries, 14 yards) were next in line, as the team ran the ball 39 times for just 97 yards. Lewis Bond led the team with 11 receptions for 138 yards in the contest. Dawson Pough (three catches, 96 yards, TD), Jeremiah Franklin (five catches, 50 yards), Luke McLaughlin (three grabs, 49 yards), Jaedn Skeete (two catches, 24 yards, two TD), Reed Harris (two receptions, 23 yards, TD) and Jordan McDonald (two grabs, 13 yards, TD) were utilized in the passing game as well. Luca Lombardo hit all nine extra point attempts and his lone field goal attempt, which came from 48 yards.

Spartans Look for 2-0 Start

Michigan State wasn’t overwhelming in their season opener but managed to take care of business against Western Michigan at home. The Spartans now look to earn a win here to roll to a 2-0 start on the season. Against Western Michigan, Michigan State’s defense did the job as they didn’t allow the Broncos’ offense to put any points on the board. The Spartans led 7-0 after the opening quarter, pushed the margin to 21-0 at the half and kept Western Michigan off the scoreboard until just 2:41 remained in the game. Michigan State rolled up a 341-217 advantage in total offense, picked up 20 first downs while allowing 10 and owned a 36:47 to 23:13 advantage in time of possession in the game. Those numbers made up that they committed a pair of turnovers, including a pick-six, while forcing only one in the game.

Aidan Chiles completed 17 of 23 passes for 155 yards plus a score while adding 10 carries for eight yards on the ground in the game. Alessio Milivojevic’s lone pass in the game was intercepted. Makhi Frazier led the Spartans on the ground with 14 carries for 103 yards and a score. Brandon Tullis (seven carries, 52 yards, TD) and Elijah Tau-Tolliver (eight carries, 17 yards, TD) were also involved in the ground game. Omari Kelly led the team with seven catches for 75 yards in the win. Nick Marsh (five receptions, 32 yards, TD) and Michael Masunas (two grabs, 22 yards) were the only other players with multiple catches. Blake Sislo hit all three extra point attempts and didn’t attempt a field goal in the game. Ryan Eckley didn’t attempt an extra point while missing his lone field goal attempt, which came from 46 yards.

Spread Pick for BC vs. Michigan State

  • Boston College Eagles +5 (4 units)

Both teams come off wins in their openers and look to maintain that momentum here. Boston College did a ton of damage through the air in the win over Fordham, but their run game didn’t do much, averaging just 2.5 yards per carry. Michigan State was stout defensively, but it will face a stiffer challenge here with the Eagles’ passing attack. The Spartans didn’t impress much with their offensive production and it’s tough to get excited about them moving the ball with a dink and dunk passing attack. Boston College could win straight up but this is a tight game so take the points and the Eagles here.

Over/Under Pick for Boston College vs. Michigan State

  • Under 46.5 (4 units)

Both teams were sound defensively in their respective openers. Boston College combined with Fordham for 76 points in their season-opening victory, surpassing the number of 53.5 points set by the books. The Eagles saw the over post a 7-6 mark in their 13 games last season. Michigan State’s defense didn’t give up a point in the opener while recording a safety. The Spartans combined with Western Michigan for 27 points, falling well short of the 49.5 points set by the books. Michigan State split their 12 games in relation to the total last season. With both teams looking sharp right now defensively, lean toward the under here.
