Will Boston College regain its footing on the road?
Boston College (1-3 SU, 2-2 ATS, and 3-1 O/U) has lost consecutive games to Michigan State (42-40), Stanford (30-20), and Cal (28-24). The Eagles covered the spread in their 66-10 win over Fordham and in their overtime loss to the Spartans, but couldn't cover against the Cardinal and Golden Bears.
Cal poured it on late to pick up a conference win over BC, scoring a touchdown with 1:30 left and picking off a pass in the end zone with 15 seconds remaining to hold off the Eagles. Boston College QB Dylan Lonergan was less efficient than in the first three games, tossing two interceptions in the narrow defeat. California dominated the time of possession by over ten minutes in the road win.
βYou just can't do that,β BC coach Bill O'Brien said of the team's blunders down the stretch. βLike I just told the team, I haven't been able to get it done in this program at this point, these guys learning not how to lose before they can learn to win.β
The Alabama transfer Lonergan leads the Boston College offense with 1,188 passing yards (69% CMP%), nine touchdowns, and three interceptions. The sophomore signal-caller's top receiving targets are senior WR Lewis Bond (36 receptions for 352 yards) and sophomore WR Reed Harris (15 receptions for 250 yards and two TDs). The Eagles' run game is paced by sophomore RB Turbo Richard (58 carries for 329 yards and four TDs).
Boston College scores 37.5 points per game (28th) and averages 444.0 total yards (35th), including 344.5 passing yards (5th) and 99.5 rushing yards (127th). The Eagles' defense allows 27.5 points (98th) and 329.8 total yards (51st) per game, including 205.8 passing yards (60th) and 124.0 rushing yards (50th).
Pitt is off to a poor start in ACC play
Pittsburgh (2-2 SU, 2-2 ATS, and 3-1 O/U) won and covered in its first two games against Duquesne (61-9) and Central Michigan (45-17), but lost straight-up and against the spread versus West Virginia (31-24 in OT) and Louisville (34-27). Can the Panthers earn their first ACC victory of the season?
Pitt was narrowly outgained last week at home, squandering an early 17-point lead in its loss to the Cardinals. The Panthers scored 27 first-half points but were held without a point after halftime, as five costly turnovers prevented them from getting on the scoreboard. Louisville dominated the time of possession by nearly 17 minutes and was 9-for-19 on third down. The home team was a combined 2-for-14 on third and fourth down. Pitt removed starting QB Eli Holstein after two interceptions, but it isn't expected to be a long-term change.
βI think anytime your quarterback throws two picks it gets in his head and weβre playing to win and I wanted to see if we can get a spark,β Panthers head coach Pat Narduzzi said.
The former Alabama signal-caller Holstein has completed 63 percent of his passes for 1,050 yards with 11 touchdowns and five interceptions in his second season with Pittsburgh. His top receiving target is senior WR Raphael Williams Jr., who has caught 16 passes for 302 yards and four touchdowns. Senior RB Desmond Reid (24 carries for 142 yards and one TD) and freshman RB Juelz Goff (28 carries for 116 yards and two TDs) pace the ineffective Pitt ground game.
Pitt scores 39.3 points per game (17th) and averages 403.0 total yards (64th), including 301.0 passing yards (19th) and 102.0 rushing yards (124th). The Panthers' defense allows 22.8 points (63rd) and 312.8 total yards (37th) per game, including 236.8 passing yards (90th) and 76.0 rushing yards (7th).
Boston College vs. Pittsburgh Pick
Spread Pick for Boston College vs. Pittsburgh
- Pitt Panthers -6.5 (5 Units)
The Panthers have lost consecutive games, but led by three scores last weekend, and should bounce back at home. The Eagles have lost their momentum since falling to Michigan State in overtime, and they have traveled a lot this season. They blew a late lead in their last game versus Cal, which could carry over into Saturday's matchup. While both offenses can move the football through the air, the Panthers should be more efficient on the ground. Reid missed last week's loss but is expected to return to the field, giving the home team a more balanced offense. That should help Holstein reduce the uncharacteristic turnovers that plagued Pittsburgh versus Louisville. On the other side of the ball, the home team has been stout against the run (7th in rushing yards allowed), as well.
Bet on Pitt to cover the spread!
Over/Under Pick for Boston College vs. Pittsburgh
- Under 58 (5 Units)
I anticipate a strong showing by the Panthers in the trenches. With a complementary run game, Holstein will take better care of the football, allowing the home team to control the tempo and bleed the clock on the ground. While both offenses could put up plenty of points, the visitors' struggles in the run game make them one-dimensional. I'm also concerned about Lonergan's confidence after last week's poor performance. The Panthers boast one of the top run defenses in the country and rank 32nd in third-down defense, which will make it difficult for the Eagles to move the chains.
This is total is too high β bet on the under.
