Use Code WWWC The Eastern Michigan Eagles (2-7, 1-4 MAC) will host the Bowling Green Falcons (3-6, 1-4 MAC) in a Mid-American Conference matchup on Saturday. Falcons in a must-win situation
For some teams, beating their rival can make their season, and that has been the vibe Bowling Green has been giving off. After upsetting their archrival Toledo 28-23, the Falcons have been playing terrible football, losing to Central Michigan 27-6, Kent State 24-21, and Buffalo 28-3. Now, with three games remaining, the Falcons need to run the table to have a shot at a bowl.
The good news is that the Falcons will end the season with winnable games against Akron and UMass. The bad news is it takes points to win games, and with the way the Falcons are struggling to find the end zone, nothing is likely to come easy. Bowling Green ranks 126th in the country, averaging 304.8 yards and 18.2 points per game, 79th in rushing, and 123rd in passing yards per matchup. Hunter Najm also played last Saturday against Buffalo, completing just 4 of 12 for 48 yards and a pick.

The Falcons have dealt with injuries at quarterback, and four different signal-callers have taken snaps for them. The starter is former Notre Dame quarterback Drew Pyne, who also spent time at Arizona State and Missouri after that. Pyne has not looked good for the Falcons this season, completing less than 53% of his passes in three of his last four starts. On the season, Pyne has four touchdown passes and four interceptions.
The Falcons have been solid on defense. They are 48th in the FBS, allowing 346.8 yards per game, and 23rd in defensive third-down conversions allowed.
Loses piling up
Itโs been a rough season for the Eastern Michigan Eagles. With seven losses, a bowl game is highly unlikely unless they run the table and then see enough bowl-eligible teams decline invitations, which is something that has occasionally allowed 5-7 teams to sneak in. Still, the resume isnโt strong and includes an embarrassing 28-23 home loss to FCS member Long Island University. The Eagles have also lost by double digits to Texas State and Kentucky, but they did manage to pick up a win over Louisiana.
In conference play, Eastern Michigan has dropped games to Central Michigan and Buffalo, picked up a win over Northern Illinois, and has now lost back-to-back matchups to Miami and Ohio. The Eagles are led by quarterback Noah Kim, who previously played for Michigan State and Coastal Carolina. At Eastern Michigan, Kim is having a career year, completing 62.5% of his passes for 2,051 yards with 14 touchdowns and six interceptions. In their last game, Kim completed 21 of 30 for 259 ards with two passing TDs and a rushing score in their 28-21 loss to Ohio at home on Oct. 25.
Offensively, the Eagles have shown flashes of potential but havenโt been able to get many wins. They rank 85th nationally with 366.8 yards per game, including 227.9 passing yards (72nd) and 138.9 rushing yards (89th). Scoring has also been an issue, with EMU averaging 24.1 points per game, which ranks 93rd in the FBS.
The Eagles own one of the worst defenses in the country, giving up 455.7 yards per game, which ranks 130th nationally. The pass defense has been respectable, allowing just 212.1 yards per game (61st), but the run defense has been gashed, giving up 243.6 yards per game, which is dead last in the country. EMU also allows 32.9 points per game, ranking 121st in scoring defense.
Bowling Green vs Eastern Michigan Prediction
ATS Pick for Bowling Green vs. EMU
- Bowling Green +2 (5 unit)
The Falcons are only 3-6, but their three wins have been memorable. They won their season home opener against Lafayette in head coach Eddie Georgeโs first game with the program. They also upset Liberty on homecoming and shocked archrival Toledo at home as a huge underdog after falling behind 21-0. Although the Falcons have yet to win on the road, they now find themselves in another focused spot after hitting lows over the last three weeks. With this being a must-win situation, I expect the Falcons to respond.
Bowling Green has run the ball on more than 55% of its offensive plays this season, and Eastern Michigan is last in the MAC, allowing 6.5 yards per rush attempt on defense. Expect the Falcons to take advantage of that weakness and grind out a win as a road underdog.
Total Pick for Bowling Green vs. Eastern Michigan
- Under 50.5 (4 units)
Although both of these teams have issues on the defensive side of the ball, itโs hard to trust putting money on the over. With Bowling Green ranking 30th in the nation in time of possession, expect the Falcons to eat up a lot of clock by running the ball. This game is also likely to lack big plays, as Eastern Michigan ranks 77th in plays of 30 yards or more, while Bowling Green ranks 132nd.
Take the under, as I expect Bowling Green to win a 24-20 type game.
