Cougars Are Looking To Stay Perfect

BYU enters Week 7 ranked No. 18 after a 38–24 win over West Virginia, their fifth straight victory to open the season and second in Big 12 play. Quarterback Bear Bachmeier has been efficient and explosive, throwing for 1,048 yards, seven touchdowns, and just one interception on 68.7% passing. He’s also added 206 rushing yards and five scores, giving BYU a dual-threat edge. The Cougars rank 27th nationally in total offense (451.8 yards/game), 15th in rushing (234.0 yards/game), and 21st in scoring (38.4 points/game). LJ Martin leads the ground game with 490 yards and three touchdowns, while Chase Roberts averages 19.8 yards per catch and has three scores.

Defensively, BYU has been dominant. The Cougars rank eighth nationally in total defense (239.6 yards/game), sixth in scoring defense (12.2 points/game), and 12th against the pass (147.4 yards/game). They’ve allowed just six touchdowns all season and are holding opponents to 4.2 yards per play. The secondary, led by Evan Johnson and Faletau Satuala, has combined for three interceptions and 15 passes defended, while the front seven has produced 10 sacks and 96 sack yards. BYU ranks top 20 in red zone defense (75% scoring rate) and third in time of possession (33:08 per game).

BYU is a slight road favorite and has covered in three of five games this season. Head coach Kalani Sitake will lean on Martin and Bachmeier’s mobility to control tempo and keep Arizona’s offense off the field. If the Cougars win the line of scrimmage and limit Fifita’s deep shots, they’re well-positioned to stay unbeaten. With Utah, Iowa State, and Texas Tech ahead, this is the start of a brutal stretch that could define BYU’s playoff hopes.

Wildcats Lasso The Cowboys

Arizona enters Week 6 at 4–1 after a dominant 41–13 win over Oklahoma State, their third straight game scoring 30+ points. Quarterback Noah Fifita has been outstanding, throwing for 1,341 yards, 13 touchdowns, and just three interceptions on 64.6% passing. The Wildcats rank 22nd nationally in passing offense (286.2 yards/game) and 49th in scoring (33.2 points/game), with a deep receiving corps led by Jayin Whatley (316 yards, 3 TDs) and Tre Spivey (143 yards, 4 TDs). Ismail Mahdi anchors the run game with 382 yards on 64 carries, and Arizona averages 430.0 total yards per game despite ranking just 87th in rushing.

Defensively, Arizona has been quietly elite. The Wildcats rank 10th nationally in total defense (244.8 yards/game), 11th against the pass (147.2 yards/game), and 19th in scoring defense (15.6 points/game). They’ve forced 11 turnovers and allowed just seven touchdowns all season. The secondary, led by Jay’Vion Cole and Dalton Johnson, has combined for four interceptions and 28 tackles, while the front seven has produced 10 sacks and 28 tackles for loss. Arizona ranks top 10 in third-down defense (25.7% conversion rate) and has held four of five opponents under 300 total yards.

Arizona is a 1.5-point home underdog and has covered in three of four games this season. Head coach Brent Brennan will look to stretch BYU’s defense with tempo and vertical shots, but the key will be protecting Fifita against a Cougars front that ranks top 20 in sacks. If Mahdi can keep the defense honest and Arizona wins the turnover battle, they have the firepower to pull the upset. With Houston and Utah up next, this is a pivotal swing game in the Wildcats’ Big 12 title chase.

BYU vs Arizona Pick

BYU vs Arizona Spread Pick

  • Arizona +2 (4 Units)

Arizona +2 is a strong side in a matchup where quarterback play, defensive consistency, and recent trends all tilt toward the Wildcats. Noah Fifita has thrown for 1,341 yards and 13 touchdowns with just three picks, and Arizona ranks top 25 nationally in passing offense. Their defense has been even better—top 10 in total yards allowed and third-down stops—holding four of five opponents under 300 yards. BYU’s offense is balanced but hasn’t faced a secondary this disciplined, and Arizona’s ability to generate turnovers and limit explosive plays gives them a real edge at home.

The Wildcats are also riding a profitable trend: they’re 5–0 ATS in their last five games after scoring 35 or more points. That includes last week’s 41–13 rout of Oklahoma State, where Arizona dominated both sides of the ball. With Ismail Mahdi keeping defenses honest and Jayin Whatley stretching the field, Arizona has the weapons to challenge BYU’s top-tier defense. If they protect Fifita and win early downs, they’re well-positioned to cover and potentially win outright in a game that could shape the Big 12 race.

BYU vs Arizona Over/Under Pick

  • Under 48 (5 Units)

Under 48 makes sense in a matchup where both defenses rank top 10 nationally in total yards allowed and excel at limiting red zone conversions. BYU gives up just 12.2 points per game and has allowed only six touchdowns all season, while Arizona has held four of five opponents under 300 total yards and ranks top 10 in third-down defense. Both quarterbacks are efficient but not reckless, and both teams lean on ball control and field position rather than tempo. With disciplined secondaries and limited explosive plays expected, this game profiles as a defensive chess match that stays under the number.
