BYU leans on its defense
The No. 25 BYU Cougars (3-0; 3-0 ATS; 1-2 O/U) are rolling on a five-game winning streak dating back to the previous season. The Cougars started their 2025 campaign with a 69-0 dismantling of Portland State and beat Stanford 27-3 in Week 2. After enjoying a bye in Week 3, the Cougars defeated East Carolina 34-13 this past Saturday.

BYU outgained East Carolina 418-404 in total yards and won the turnover battle 2-0. Freshman QB Bear Bachmeier completed 18 of his 25 passing attempts, throwing for 246 yards and a touchdown, while junior running back LJ Martin posted 14 carries for 101 yards and a TD. Bachmeier scored once on his own, and the Cougars finished the game with 172 yards on 34 totes.
“At the beginning, I thought defensively we took them out of their rhythm, out of their fast pace,” BYU coach Kalani Sitake said.
The Cougars picked off East Carolina’s signal-caller, Katin Houser, twice and returned one interception to the house. BYU’s defense has been outstanding thus far, forcing two turnovers per game and allowing just 205.3 total yards per contest (2nd in the nation).
Bachmeier has thrown for 518 yards and four touchdowns through his first three collegiate appearances. Martin averages a staggering 8.6 yards per carry, while senior tight end Carsen Ryan has amassed 146 receiving yards and two touchdowns so far this season.
Colorado’s shaky form continues
The Colorado Buffaloes (2-2; 1-2-1 ATS; 2-2 O/U) have been inconsistent so far this season, alternating losses and wins through the first four weeks. They followed the Week 1 27-20 loss to Georgia Tech with a 31-7 victory to Delaware. After a 36-20 road loss at Houston, the Buffaloes beat Wyoming 37-20 at home in Week 4.
Last Saturday, the Buffaloes earned their first ATS victory of the season. They outgained Wyoming 497-347 in total yards, and senior QB Kaidon Salter had a big game in his return to the starting role. Salter threw for 304 yards and three touchdowns while carrying the pigskin 11 times for 86 yards and a touchdown.
“I’m happy with the results, but I’m not happy with the finish,” Colorado coach Deion Sanders said. "I told our young men, too much ha-ha and hee-heeing on the sideline when we got the lead. I wish we could be a little more — have a little more killer instinct in us to really put teams away, like we’re capable of doing.”
Salter, a transfer from Liberty, lost his job in Week 3. Through three games with the Buffaloes, Salter has tossed for 565 yards and four touchdowns while rushing 32 times for a team-high 153 yards and three touchdowns.
Senior running back Simeon Price averages 6.8 yards per carry, but he’s recorded just 21 carries over the last four weeks. The Buffaloes tally 375.0 total yards per game (83rd in the nation) and surrender 409.3 in return (112th).
BYU vs. Colorado Pick
Spread Pick for BYU vs. Colorado
- BYU -6.5 (5 units)
I’m backing the Cougars to beat the Buffaloes by at least a touchdown. BYU is arguably a much better defensive team than Colorado, and the Cougars will find a way to slow the Buffaloes down.
The Buffaloes are not a great defensive team by any stretch of the imagination. They allow 194.5 rushing yards per game (123rd in the country), so LJ Martin is poised for another strong performance.
BYU is 4-1 ATS in its last five games overall and 7-0 ATS in its previous seven contests played in September. On the other side, Colorado has beaten the number just once in its last five games overall.
Over/Under Pick for BYU vs. Colorado
- Over 47.5 (5 units)
The Buffaloes have scored at least 20 points in each of their four outings this season. They might hit a 20-point mark again, despite the fact that BYU’s defense looks like one of the best in the country. Frankly, this is the toughest test for the Cougars’ defensive unit yet.
Anyway, the Cougars will take advantage of the Buffaloes’ defensive flaws. BYU will feed LJ Martin, and the Cougars will move the chains with ease. They could easily hit a 30-point mark, so I’m going with the over.
