The California Golden Bears (3-1, 0-0 ACC) and the Boston College Eagles (1-2, 0-1 ACC) will play a cross-country matchup in the ACC on Saturday afternoon in this California vs. Boston College prediction. These teams did not meet last season. Cal just lost 34-0 on the road against San Diego State as 13.5-point favorites, while BC is coming off a 30-20 loss on the road against Stanford also as 13.5-point favorites. Kickoff is set for 3:30 EST and can be found on the ACC Network. Keep reading to see our California vs. Boston College prediction, and check out all of our best NCAAF Predictions!

California Hits Bump in the Road

The California Golden Bears got off to a hot start to their 2025 season, including wins over big programs such as their win in Oregon State, and road victory over Minnesota. The team was riding high with their 3-0 record, but then took a bad loss on the road against San Diego State. They went to the home of the Aztecs as nearly two touchdown favorites, but got run off the field badly in the 34-0 loss. Cal got behind early in the second quarter, which is why they only finished with 65 team rushing yards as they had to try to air it out for any chance of a comeback.

Cal has turned the ball over to true freshman Jaron-Keawe Sagapolutele as their quarterback as last year's starter, Fernando Mendoza, transferred to start at Indiana this season. Sagapolutele has been solid so far this season, with 988 passing yards and a 6-3 TD-INT ratio. He is not much of a runner, as he only has 20 rushing yards through his first three games, but does have good size at 6'3 and 225 pounds out of Hawaii. Kendrick Raphael came over from NC State to be the team's lead running back this season, and has 228 rushing yards with one touchdown so far through four games.

Trond Grizzell is in his third season as a starter on the outside for California, he is a 6'4 senior who leads the team with 266 yards on the year. He has already caught 15 passes, including his first touchdown of the year. Jacob de Jesus is another receiver, the 5'7 wideout has great speed with his 20 catches for 184 yards and a score. The defense has six sacks and three interceptions so far, with all three picks coming from senior defensive back Hezekiah Masses.

Eagles Need First Big Win

The Boston College Eagles have one win and two losses so far on the season, but need a strong win to get positive momentum in the building soon. Their only win of the season came against Fordham, in a game they won by 56 points as 34.5-point favorites. They were supposed to get their first quality win last week against Stanford, but lost by 10 on the road as heavy favorites. The road does not get easier for the Eagles, as they have Pitt and Clemson as their next two opponents.

In their loss against Stanford, quarterback Dylan Lonergan put up an impressive stat line completing 30 of his 44 passes for 333 yards with a touchdown. Lonergan is a 6'2 redshirt sophomore who rode the bench for the past two seasons with Alabama, but transferred over the Boston College to get a chance to start. So far this year he has 991 yards with a strong 9-1 TD-INT ratio. The team's top running back is adequately named, as Turbo Richard leads the team with 158 yards and two touchdowns in his second season with Boston College.

Lewis Bond is their top wideout, he has 29 catches through the first three games and leads the team with 275 yards. Bond is a 5'11 senior who has been with Boston College for the past five seasons. Their defense has eight sacks and just one interception on the season, with linebacker Daveon Crouch leading the way with one of each category.

California vs. Boston College Prediction and Picks

Spread Pick for California vs. Boston College

  • Boston College -5.5 (5 units)

This is a big number for Boston College to lay here, especially considering their only win is over Fordham, but as long as this spread is under a touchdown, then BC is the play. This is a tough spot for California; the conference alignment may be a year old, but this is still a long travel from Cal to BC for an afternoon kickoff. On top of this, the Eagles have the better quarterback who has more experience. Lonergan has a 9-1 TD-INT ratio despite playing against Michigan State and Stanford in two of their three games. Cal is starting a true freshman at quarterback, and this cross-country flight will be too much for the freshman and their offense to handle. Boston College gets their best win of the season here.

Take Boston College to cover.

Over/Under Pick for California vs. Boston College

  • Under 53.5

This number is too big for these offenses to handle. Neither team has been elite offensively, and while Boston College has had more consistent play from the quarterback position, the team is still only 1-2 through its first three games. Boston College only scored 20 points last week, which is much better than the zero points California put up in their road game against San Diego State. Each team is desperate for a conference win, and this might be their best chance. Expect conservative play here in a low-scoring slug fest.

Take the under.
