Charlotte needs major improvements on both sides of the line of scrimmage

The Charlotte 49ers score an average of 18.3 points per game, which is 122nd, while allowing an average of 29.3 points per game, which is 110th. The 49ers’ offense averages 88.2 yards (131st) rushing and 258.2 yards (47th) passing for 346.5 yards (100th) of total offense per game. Charlotte's defense allows an average of 158.2 yards (84th) rushing and 266.8 yards (117th) passing for 425.0 yards (116th) per game.

Charlotte starting quarterback Connor Harrell has 737 yards passing with four touchdowns and two interceptions. Harrell was injured in Charlotte's last game versus Rice and was helped off the field. His status is still unknown for Friday (edit: is now out). Backup QB Grayson Loftis has 296 yards passing with one touchdown and two interceptions. Loftis has been sacked six times, though the Duke transfer is likely to get the nod here. Rod Gainey Jr has 145 yards rushing to lead Charlotte with an average of 4.7 yards per carry and one touchdown. E.Jai Mason leads all receivers with 308 yards and three touchdowns. Linebacker Shay Taylor leads in tackles with 26, while linebacker Reid Williford has a team-best 2.0 sacks. Charlotte’s defense has 5.0 QB sacks but has not intercepted a pass.

South Florida's offense is solid, while its defense bends but does not break

Charlotte 49ers vs. South Florida Bulls Pick

Spread Pick for Charlotte vs. South Florida

  • South Florida Bulls -27.5 (5 units)

The South Florida Bulls will dominate the Charlotte 49ers on both sides of the line of scrimmage. South Florida's offense averages 265.5 yards passing, which is 39th and will face a Charlotte defense that allows an average of 266.8 yards per game, which is 117th. South Florida is allowing just 1.8 sacks per game, which is 68th, and Charlotte's defense averages just 1.2 sacks per game, which is 120th. This will give South Florida quarterback Byrum Brown plenty of time in the pocket to find his receivers. The Charlotte defense has not yet intercepted a pass. Charlotte is weak on the ground, averaging just 88.2 yards rushing per game, which is 131st. The Bulls’ defense will sit back and play the pass and make Charlotte beat them on the ground, which, in all likelihood, will not happen. USF is 4-1 ATS in the last five games and 5-1 ATS in the last 6 games the Bulls played on a Friday. South Florida wideout Chas Nimrod gives the Bulls a huge downfield threat, averaging over 26 yards per reception. Without Harrell, it's going to be a long night for the 49ers.

Over/Under Pick for Charlotte vs. USF

  • Over 55.5 (5 units)

The total has finished over in 10 of Charlotte’s last 15 games, seven of Charlotte’s last 8 games played on the road, six of South Florida’s last 8 games overall, and five of the Bulls’ last six games against a team from the American Athletic Conference. Charlotte is 110th in points allowed at 29.3 points per game, and South Florida is 38th in scoring, averaging 36.3 points per game. The Bulls will score much more than their share of points, and Charlotte will score enough to push the total over.
