Clemson has been a major bust this season
Clemson (1-3 SU, 0-4 ATS, and 1-3 O/U) has lost consecutive games and struggled in its lone win. The Tigers have dropped games to LSU, Georgia Tech, and Syracuse, and trailed at halftime in their only win, versus Troy. In short, it's been a major disappointment for a team that was considered a national championship contender heading into the season.
Clemson lost 34-21 to the Cuse at home two weeks ago, committing two costly turnovers and converting only four of its 18 combined third and fourth down plays. The Tigers narrowly outgained the Orange, passing for 363 yards and averaging 6.4 yards per rush, but Syracuse took a commanding early lead and never relented.
βWe are beat up emotionally and physically, but we will rally and get back to work,β Clemson coach Dabo Swinney said. βThere is no quit in me or my team. We have to reset our goals. We canβt dwell on missed opportunities. ... Itβs still a long season and we have to find a way to win a game.β
The Tigers are led by senior QB Cade Klubnik, who has completed 60 percent of his passes for 996 yards with six TDs and four INTs. His top receiving target is Bryant Wesco Jr. (24 receptions for 389 yards and five TDs), while senior RB Adam Randall (57 carries for 338 yards and three TDs) paces the Clemson ground game.
The Tigers score 19.8 points per game (116th) and average 365.3 total yards (87th), including 249.0 passing yards (55th) and 116.3 rushing yards (112th). The Clemson defense allows 22.8 points (61st) and 362.0 total yards (72nd) per game, including 240.0 passing yards (94th) and 122.0 rushing yards (49th).
Tar Heels have yet to make a statement under Belichick
North Carolina (2-2 SU, 2-2 ATS, and 1-3 O/U) has struggled in its first season under legendary head coach Bill Belichick, losing by 34 points to TCU and 25 points to UCF in its two high-profile games. Can the Tar Heels make a statement by tripping up the Tigers?
UNC got down early and couldn't get up off the mat in its last game, as Central Florida coasted to a home win. The Tar Heels didn't find the end zone until the third quarter (their only TD), and they were outgained 366-217 in total yards. North Carolina was ineffective on the ground, averaging only 2.5 yards per carry, and lost the turnover battle 2-0.
The Heels have a conundrum at the quarterback position, as sophomore Gio Lopez has been ineffective (3:3 TD:INT ratio with six sacks), opening the door for senior QB Max Johnson (two touchdowns and zero INTs in limited action) to battle for the starting job. Belichick was mum on who would take the field on Saturday, but given Lopez's struggles and the leg injury he sustained against UCF, Johnson is a good bet to make the start. His top receiving target will be sophomore WR Jordan Shipp (13 receptions for 193 yards and two scores), and freshman RB Demon June (33 carries for 250 yards and one TD) will handle the bulk of the Tar Heels' carries in the run game.
North Carolina scores 21.0 points per game (106th) and averages 263.5 total yards (134th), including 150.0 passing yards (124th) and 113.5 rushing yards (114th). The Tar Heels' defense surrenders 22.8 points (62nd) and 344.5 total yards (59th) per game, including 208.0 passing yards (64th) and 136.5 rushing yards (63rd).
Clemson vs. North Carolina Pick
Spread Pick for Clemson vs. North Carolina
- Tar Heels +14 (5 Units)
This game looked attractive on paper before the season started, but it's hardly on anyone's radar this week. That said, I doubt the Tigers will cover the 14-point spread. Clemson hasn't done anything to prove it's worthy of a two-touchdown spread on the road against a conference foe, even if UNC has been underwhelming. The Tigers only played one winning half of football in their lone win against Troy, and their run game has been too unreliable to predict a dominant win. Their defense has also been below-average despite featuring a lot of highly-recruited prospects, and Johnson could provide the Tar Heels with a spark if he gets the start on Saturday.

Over/Under Pick for Clemson vs. North Carolina
- Over 46 (4 Units)
How much defense will we see in this ACC clash? While neither offense has dominated, these defenses are unlikely to make many key plays. The Tigers are stout up front, but their secondary has struggled, ranking just inside the top 100 in passing yards allowed. Johnson is in his sixth collegiate season, as injuries have derailed the former top recruit's progress in his previous stops at LSU and Texas A&M. That said, he could provide a more reliable presence in the pocket than Lopez has been so far. I also expect Klubnik to bounce back after a mediocre start to the season. He has struggled when under pressure, but the Tar Heels ranked 129th nationally in sacks.
