Duke Misses Big Opportunity
The Duke Blue Devils opened ACC play with three straight wins, as they took down NC State, Syracuse and California in consecutive matchups. The Blue Devils then had the chance to host the #12-ranked G-Tech Yellow Jackets, but fumbled their opportunity at a big win with their nine-point loss. The game was tight the whole way, until Duke gave up 17 points in the fourth quarter as their win slipped out of their hands. Darian Mensah passed for 373 yards and two touchdowns in the game, but it was not enough in the losing effort.
Mensah is having a strong year at quarterback, as he was one of the team's best gets in the transfer portal over the summer. He is just a sophomore, and he put up big numbers with Tulane last season as a freshman before joining the ACC. So far this season, Mensah has 2,211 passing yards with an incredibly strong 17-2 TD-INT ratio while completing 70.3% of his passes. He will not look to scramble out of the pocket at all, as he has negative rushing yards on the season. When Duke does hand the ball off, it typically goes to freshman back Nate Sheppard, who is leading the team with 497 yards and four touchdowns.
Cooper Barkate has been their best threat in the passing game. The 6'1 senior played three seasons with Harvard, but has made a splash in his first year with Duke. He has 39 catches for 647 yards and four touchdowns on the year. Their defense has 17 sacks on the year, led by explosive edge rusher Vincent Anthony Jr. with 6.5. Their defense has ten interceptions so far, with cornerback Moussa Kane as the only player with two picks.

Tigers Keep Fighting
The Clemson Tigers were a popular pick to represent the ACC in the College Football Playoff this season, but with four losses under their belt, that feat seems nearly impossible from here. That doesn't mean the Tigers are giving up, as the team is still loaded with talent and is not ready to pack their bags for the Spring just yet. They took a tough loss in their last outing against SMU, losing by 11 points at home. In that game, Clemson turned to their backup quarterback as Cade Klubnik sat out with an injury.
Christopher Vizzina is their backup quarterback, and he still put up solid numbers against SMU. He is a 6'4 sophomore in his second year with the team, and finished the game with 317 passing yards and three touchdown passes. Klubnik is listed as probable for this game as he continues to battle his ankle injury, and it is possible we see both quarterbacks on the field if Klubnik is not fully ready to play the whole game. Adam Randall has been their top back; the senior has been with Clemson his entire career and has rushed for 433 yards and four touchdowns this season.
The Tigers got bad news when they learned their top receiver, Bryant Wesco Jr., would be out for the remainder of the season with an injury. This leaves T.J. Moore as their top option in the passing game, as he has 407 yards and three touchdowns on the year. The defense has 17 sacks, led by defensive end Will Heldt with four. The team has five interceptions on the season, with three of them coming from safety Ricardo Jones.
Duke vs. Clemson Prediction and Picks
Spread pick for Duke vs. Clemson
- Duke +3.5 (5 units)
This is the point of the season where the contenders are separated from the pretenders, and this has the potential to be a monumental week for both teams. Clemson is not the same team they were several seasons ago, as they have four losses and are no longer the class of the ACC. More importantly, they have uncertainty at quarterback, as Klubnik has a hurt ankle, and the team has yet to announce which of their two quarterbacks will get the start. Duke knows who will start at quarterback for them, as they found a gem from the transfer portal in Mensah, who has a strong 17-2 ratio. Even if Klubnik were to be healthy and play, Mensah would still be the better quarterback, and with the Blue Devils sitting at 3-1 in league play, they have more optimism on their side.
Take Duke plus the points.
Over/Under Pick for Duke vs. Clemson
- Over 54.5 (4 units)
This game looks as if it will be a shootout. Neither team has had a tough time scoring all season, but getting stops has been harder for the defensive units. Each team looks as if it will have a strong quarterback, because Mensah will certainly suit up for Duke, and even the Clemson backup put up strong numbers last week. Vizzina hopes to be the starter for Clemson next season, and showed his potential while passing for over 300 yards last week against SMU. Each defense gave up 27 or more points last week, expect more of the same here in a high-scoring battle.
Take the over.
