East Carolina still in non-conference play

The East Carolina Pirates head into their third of four non-conference games this week in South Carolina against Coastal Carolina. The Pirates downed Campbell 56-3 last week at home in Dowdy-Finklin Stadium. ECU easily downed their overmatched FCS opponent right from the start to pick up their first win of the season.

"Our objective tonight was to come out and start fast and obviously get the win, and I thought we did a good job with that," Head coach Blake Harrell said.

Quarterback Katin Houser led the Pirates’ attack. He completed 25-of-35 passes for 313 yards and two touchdowns before leaving the blowout late in the third quarter. It was the fourth career game of at least 300 yards passing for Houser. In all, the Pirates amassed 535 yards of total offense. Four quarterbacks saw action for the Pirates, and 15 different receivers caught a pass in the game. In all, the Pirates finished with 27 first downs.

On the defensive side of the ball, ECU limited Campbell to just three points. Campbell finished with just 151 yards of total offense against the stout Pirates’ defense. The Pirates finished with nine tackles for loss, including two sacks. Defensive lineman Preston Carr had a stellar game with four tackles and a fumble recovery.

East Carolina is 87th in the country in points per game. They are 135th in the nation on the ground and fifth through the air. Defensively, the Pirates are 69th in points allowed per game. They are 24th against the run and just 121st in the country against the pass. The team ranks 24th in turnover margin and just 126th in penalties per game. They are 96th in the nation in time of possession.

Key Injuries: No Injuries to Report

Coastal Carolina wraps up non-conference schedule

The Coastal Carolina Chanticleers get set to host the ECU Pirates on Saturday with a record of 1-1 after a shutout win over Charleston Southern at Brooks Stadium last weekend. The win improved the team to 1-1 on the season as they get set to play their last non-conference game this week before kicking off the Sun Belt Conference schedule in full force. They’ll now gear up for a tough ECU team.

“East Carolina’s a good football team. There’s no question about it,” Head coach Tim Beck said. “We’re going to have to definitely be better, offensively in particular.”

It was an uneven effort from the Chanticleers’ offense last weekend. Beck used two quarterbacks in the game, starting with MJ Morris and finishing with Tad Hudson. Morris played the first three quarters, going 13-of-22 for just 102 yards, and was picked off three times. Tad Hudson stepped in and led the team to its only touchdown in the fourth quarter. He finished 3-of-5 for 27 yards and ran for an additional 19 yards. The run game was solid, led by running back Dominic Knicely. He had 92 yards in nine carries. Ja’Vin Simpkins rushed for 58 yards, and Jalen John chipped in with 51. In all, the Chanticleers finished with 384 yards of total offense, including 245 on the ground.

The Chanticleers’ defense did the job, holding Charleston Southern to just 153 yards of total offense, including just 55 through the air. Zeke Campbell finished with two tackles for loss and 1.5 sacks. In all, the defense had six tackles for loss and kept Campbell to just 3.8 yards per carry. Shane Bruce snatched his third career interception in the win.

The Chanticleers come into this contest ranked 124th in the nation in points per game. They are just 102nd in the country in both rushing and passing. Defensively, the Chanticleer are just 127th in points allowed per game. They are 65th in run defense and 112th against the run. The team is 127th in the nation in turnover margin and 83rd in penalties per game. The Chanticleers are 104th in the country in time of possession.

Key Injuries: TE Cane Berrong and QB Emmett Brown are out.

Point Spread pick for East Carolina vs. Coastal Carolina

  • ECU -7.5 (4 units)

The matchup that will turn the tide in this game will be the ECU passing game vs. the CC secondary. The Pirates are ranked fifth in the country in passing, while the Chanticleers are 112th in the nation against the pass. The Pirates will rely heavily on the pass in this one and, despite their propensity to throw the ball, rarely turn it over. They are 24th in the country in turnover margin. On the flip side, the Chanticleers are just 127th in the nation in turnover margin. CC does not have the kind of firepower offensively that they can survive multiple turnovers. They can also not afford to give ECU any short fields. Unfortunately, the trends suggest that is exactly what will happen and that will lead to an easy ECU win.

Take ECU -7.5

Over/Under Pick for ECU vs. Coastal Carolina

  • Under 56.5

The Chanticleers have gone under this number in each of their first two games. They are ranked 124th in the country in points per game this season. ECU will force them to be one-dimensional, ranked 24th in the country against the run. This one will be dominated by ECU, but I don’t expect a high-scoring game.

Take the under.
