Eastern Michigan Trying to Pick Up Road Win

Eastern Michigan picked up a home win over Northern Illinois last week to snap a two-game slide. The Eagles improved to 2-5 on the season and stand 1-2 in MAC play on the season. Against Northern Illinois, Eastern Michigan rallied in the fourth quarter to pick up a victory in a game where points were hard to come by. The Eagles led 3-0 after one quarter and 6-3 at the half only to trail 10-6 after three quarters. Eastern Michigan scored the game’s final 10 points to pull out the win. The Eagles picked up 17 first downs while allowing 15 and owned a narrow 30:06 to 29:54 margin in time of possession in the game to make up for getting outgained 332-296 in total offense. Both teams turned the ball over once in the game.

For the year, the Eagles are 88th in the nation in passing offense as they average 211.9 yards per game through the air and 75th in rushing offense by picking up 154 yards per contest on the ground. Eastern Michigan is 96th in the FBS in scoring offense as they put up an average of 23.7 points per game, while they are 123rd in scoring defense by allowing 32 points per contest. Noah Kim is 142 of 227 passing for 1,483 yards with eight touchdowns and four interceptions while adding 115 yards and a score on the ground. Dontae McMillan leads the team on the ground with 105 carries for 637 yards and pair of scores this season. Tavierre Dunlap (68 carries, 232 yards, three TD) and Joey Mattord (six carries, 40 yards, TD) are also in the mix. Terry Lockett Jr. is second on the team with 19 receptions for 263 yards and a score this season. Joshua Long (23 catches, 255 yards, three TD), McMillan (18 grabs, 191 yards, two TD), Ben Prosper (17 catches, 151 yards), Porter Rooks (18 catches, 117 yards) and Nick Deveraux (17 grabs, 235 yards, TD) are other valuable options. Rudy Kessinger is 16 of 16 on extra point attempts and 14 of 18 field goal attempts with a long of 50 on the year.

Dunlap and Lockett Jr. are both considered questionable for this contest.

RedHawks Seeking to Soar to Fourth Straight Win

Miami (OH) started the year 0-3 but has won three straight contests after dumping Akron on the road last week. The RedHawks improved to 3-3 overall on the year and are 2-0 in the MAC, leaving them tied for second, half a game behind Western Michigan for the top spot. Against Akron, Miami (OH) led just 3-0 at the half before creating breathing room with a pair of third-quarter scores. The RedHawks were stingy defensively, keeping the Zips off the scoreboard until just under seven minutes remained in the game. Miami (OH) outgained Akron 350-273 in total offense, picked up 20 first downs while allowing 17, and controlled the clock by a 34:12 to 25:48 margin in a game where both teams committed one turnover.

The RedHawks have had their issues on the offensive side of the ball this season: they enter this game 99th in the nation in passing offense (196.7 yards per game) and 78th in rushing (148.3 yards per game) so far. Miami (OH) is 99th in the FBS in scoring offense by putting up 23 points per contest and are 45th in scoring defense in the FBS by allowing 20.7 points per game. Dequan Finn has completed 58 of 104 passes for 838 yards with four touchdowns and five interceptions this season, along with a team-high 274 rushing yards plus a score. Henry Hesson (21 of 38, 342 yards, three TD, 13 rushing yards) has seen limited action under center. Kenny Tracy leads the RedHawks’ running back group on the ground with 49 carries for 272 yards and a score this season. Jordan Brunson (51 carries, 183 yards, TD) and D’Shawntae Jones (17 carries, 51 yards, three TD) are also in the mix. In the aerial game, Keith Reynolds leads the team with 23 receptions for 216 yards plus a score. Kam Perry (17 catches, 505 yards, three TD), Tracy (11 grabs, 121 yards, two TD), Cole Weaver (10 receptions, 121 yards) and Deion Colzie (six catches, 119 yards, TD) are each over the 100-yard mark in receiving yards. Dom Dzioban has hit all 16 extra point attempts and eight of 10 field goal attempts with a long of 46 this season.

Running backs Tracy and Josh Ringer are both questionable for this contest.

Eastern Michigan vs. Miami (OH) Pick

Spread Pick for Eastern Michigan vs. Miami (OH)

  • Miami (OH) -12.5 (4 units)

One might look at this matchup, see two below-average offensive units, and think a double-digit line is a surefire trigger pull on the underdog. That’s not the case in this contest, however. Eastern Michigan may be coming off a win last week, but they are 0-4 on the road while being outscored by a 155-93 margin. The Eagles have covered the line just once in those four contests. Miami (OH) has won three straight and pushed a 6-0 UNLV squad to the limit immediately before that. The RedHawks have covered the line in each of their three wins and with the way they are playing right now, look for them to earn the victory here.

Over/Under Pick for Eastern Michigan vs. Miami (OH)

  • Over 46.5 (4 units)

Eastern Michigan enters this game having seen the over hit in four of its seven games on the year. The Eagles have gone over the number in three of their four road contests, with their 24-13 loss to Central Michigan the lone exception back on September 27. Miami (OH) has split its six games in relation to the total this year. The RedHawks split their two home games, going over the mark in the loss to UNLV and staying under the number in a win over Lindenwood. Miami (OH) should take advantage of a sputtering Eastern Michigan defense to put up enough points to help this game over the number.
