East Carolina on a winning streak
ECU enters this week as one of four teams in the American with just one conference loss, along with Navy, Tulane, and North Texas. The Pirates have won four straight games, most recently winning 31-27 against Memphis on Saturday.
East Carolina has been one of the most efficient and balanced offenses in the nation. The Pirates rank 14th nationally in total offense, averaging 466.3 yards per game, while also ranking 17th in passing (286.7 ypg) and 40th in rushing (179.6 ypg). They put up 33.6 points per game and can beat teams in multiple ways. Quarterback Katin Houser has completed 66.6% of his passes with 15 touchdowns and five interceptions. The ground game has been strong behind Landon Montgomery, who leads the team with 637 rushing yards.
In the win over Memphis, Houser went 23 for 34 for 332 yards with a touchdown passing and another on the ground. Montgomery ran for two touchdowns and 103 yards.
Defensively, East Carolina has been just as impressive, ranking 15th in the nation in scoring defense, allowing only 18.3 points per game. The Pirates are 43rd in total defense (339.1 yards allowed per game) and 30th against the run (119.4), though they’ve been more vulnerable through the air, ranking 69th in pass defense (219.7). In the victory against Memphis, ECU allowed 457 total yards, 240 came on the ground, and 217 passing.
UTSA fighting for sixth win
After starting the season 2-2, UTSA has zig-zagged between wins and losses on its way to a .500 record. Last week, they went on the road and beat Charlotte 28-7, which was a bounce back from their 55-23 loss to USF. The Roadrunners now have two tough home games against ECU and Army to get bowl-eligible.
UTSA ranks 48th nationally in total offense, averaging 411.9 yards per game, while also ranking 60th in passing (240.1 ypg) and 49th in rushing (171.8 ypg). They put up 32.3 points per game (38th), led by quarterback Owen McCown, 2,181 yards, 20 TDs, 6 INTs, and 67.2 completion percentage. On the ground, Robert Henry has racked up 983 yards and nine touchdowns, although his production has dipped substantially over the last two games.
In the win over Charlotte, McCown went 24 for 37 for 306 yards with two touchdowns and a pick. Henry only picked up one rushing yard on eight carries, but Will Henderson III stepped up and rushed for 185 yards and a touchdown on just 19 carries.
On defense, UTSA is 80th in the country, giving up 388.1 yards per game. They are 96th allowing 240.6 passing yards and 68th against the run (147.5). Opponents have lit them up for 30.4 ppg, which is 112th in the country. The Roadrunners improved their season numbers, outgaining Charlotte 521 to 197 in total yards in their last game. They have allowed 146 passing yards but only 51 rushing.
East Carolina Pirates vs. UTSA Roadrunners Predictions
ECU vs UTSA ATS Pick:
- East Carolina -2.5 (5 units)
The spread here seems light. East Carolina has been consistent this season and seems to be getting better each time they step on the field. According to the Football Power Index, ECU ranks 50th in the country, and UTSA is 75th. Alot of the things that make the Pirates the better team come to execution in key situations. The Pirates are fifth in the country in red zone defense, ninth on third down defense, and 70th in penalty yards per game. As for UTSA, they are just 71st on third-down conversions and red zone scoring and 124th in penalty yards.
My play is on East Carolina.
ECU vs UTSA Total Pick:
- Over 62.5 (4 units)
UTSA has combined with its opponents for at least 72 points in four of its last five games. On the other side, ECU has topped 40 points in three of its last four games, and its offense is sixth in the nation in seconds per play.
With this game being played inside the Alamodome, both offenses will have perfect conditions to get up and down the field.
I like the over.
