Owls get squashed at USF by 35
FAU had just one win going into conference play, and that came against FCS Florida A&M (FAMU) 56-14 on Sept. 6. After starting out 0-1 in the league, losing to Memphis 55-26, they came back to beat Rice (27-21) on the road and UAB (53-33) at home. But all that momentum was lost when they were crushed by South Florida from Tampa, 48-13. QB Caden Veltkamp completed 35 of 50 for 244 yards with a TD and a pick. He threw 50 times because the Owls got behind by 18 points in the fourth quarter and then were outscored 17-0 in the fourth quarter. The running game was also a non-factor as FAU was held to 23 yards on 30 carries.
The defense was a disaster against USF as they allowed 259 yards rushing and 263 yards passing. That's been an issue this season as they rank 99th overall in yards allowed per game (396.7) and 111th in rushing yards allowed per game (111th), while ranking 128th in points allowed (35.4). A bigger issue has been forcing turnovers as they rank tied for 133rd with 0.3 takeaways per game. On offense, they average 424.1 yards per game (43rd) and are 4th in passing yards (317.4 ypg). The Owls can't run the ball (106ypg), but the weather is supposed to be in the mid-50s with little wind in Annapolis on Saturday, so they should be able to pass the ball.
That's good news because Veltkamp is completing 66.2% of his passes for 2,025 yards with 15 TDs and 10 INTs, while rushing for two TDs. His leading receiver is Easton Messer, who has 60 catches for 560 yards and a TD.

Horvath a Heisman candidate?
Navy quarterback Blake Horvath is a real long shot (about+25000) to win the Heisman Trophy, which would be a huge accomplishment for a program, that has not had a winner since Roger Staubach in 1963. Of course, at 6-0, Navy would have to continue to win and they might be 8-0Β before facing Notre Dame on Nov. 8. However, after a bye week, the Mids do have things to work on, especially on the defensive end, after they allowed 31 points at home against Air Force (34-31 win) and 31 points in their last game on Oct. 11 to Temple (32-31 win).
In their win over Temple, they produced just 15 first downs and gave up 345 yards passing. They were even dominated in time of possession (34:02-25:58), which is a rarity for an option-style/Wing-Tish team. But Horvath was able to use his legs to his advantage, rushing for 155 yards, including a 51-yard TD run with 39 seconds left to cut the deficit to 31-30. Head coach Brian Newberry decided to go for two and Horvath, off a scramble, hit FB Alex Tecza in the end zone for the win.
On the season, Horvath is completing 65% of his passes for 980 yards with seven TDs and three picks. He also has 645 yards rushing and eight TDs. Tecza adds 409 yards rushing and five TDs. WR/SB Eli Heidenreich leads the team with 23 catches for 485 yards and four TDs, but also is a threat as a runner with 266 yards rushing (7.6ypc) and three TDs.
Defensively, the pass defense has been brutal at times. Overall, they allow 235.8 yards per game in the air (91st) and 125.2 rushing yards per game (45th). Offensively, and not surprisingly, they lead the nation in rushing yards per game at 305 yards per contest and rank 15th in total offense (472.7ypg).
Florida Atlantic vs. Navy Pick
Spread Pick for FAU vs. Navy
- FAU +15.5 (5 units)
I can't trust Navy's defense right now and Veltkamp is the type of quarterback that could hurt them, especially if the weather is mild in October. Evan Simon, who is a 62% passer, completed 25 of 35 for 345 yards against the Mids on Oct. 11. Navy will put up points, but they have to score to win this game. Despite going 6-0, Navy is 0-3 ATS in their last three games and 1-4 ATS in their last five, so they are overvalued right now because they are undefeated. They also gave up 249 yards passing to Air Force of all teams, so expect the Owls to be able to take advantage of a very iffy Navy secondary.
Over/Under Pick for FAU vs. Navy
- Over 62.5 (4 units)
I know this is a big spread, but both teams can easily top 30 points in this game. Navy may need to put up 42 points and that's certainly possible, as they did that against Tulsa (42-23) and put up 38 against UAB. They've also gone over in two straight and five of their last six games. FAU just gave up 48 points, so defense is not its strength. The Owls have gone over in four of their last six games.
