The Seminoles meet the Cardinal for the first time ever. Florida State is a firm 17.5-point road favorite, while the total sits at 53.5 points. The kick-off at Stanford Stadium is set at 10:30 PM ET, so let’s take a closer look at this Florida State vs. Stanford prediction, one of our NCAAF picks for Week 8.
Florida State came back down to earth
The Florida State Seminoles (3-3; 3-3 ATS; 5-1 O/U) opened the season with a three-game winning streak, which started with a stunning 31-17 victory over then-No. 8 Alabama. The Seminoles trounced East Texas A&M 77-3 in Week 2, and after a bye in Week 3, they routed Kent State 66-10 in Week 4.
Since then, the Seminoles have dropped three straight contests. After a heartbreaking 46-38 double-overtime defeat at Virginia, the Seminoles have suffered consecutive home losses against No. 3 Miami 28-22 and Pittsburgh 34-31.

Last Saturday, the Seminoles hosted the Panthers as 10.5-point favorites. Florida State racked up 415 total yards but gave up 476 in return and committed eight penalties for 72 yards. Senior QB Tommy Castellanos threw for 245 yards and three touchdowns, while freshman WR Micahi Danzy had seven receptions for 133 yards and two touchdowns.
“We didn't do enough to overcome the negative plays,” Florida State coach Mike Norvell said. “Obviously, we had some missed opportunities and some self-inflicted mistakes that cost us big in this game. At the end of the day, we got three straight weeks finishing the game with a one-possession loss.”
The Seminoles are 0-3 in conference play. They score 44.2 points per game (5th in the nation) and surrender 23.0 points in return (60th). Castellanos has thrown for 1,365 yards, nine touchdowns, and five interceptions so far this season, while Danzy has 498 yards from scrimmage and five touchdowns. Junior RB Gavin Sawchuk leads the backfield with 67 carries for 352 yards and seven touchdowns.
Stanford’s shaky form continues
The Stanford Cardinal (2-4; 1-5 ATS; 3-3 O/U) have alternated wins and losses over their last four outings. They’ve beaten Boston College 30-20 and San Jose State 30-29 at home while losing at Virginia 48-20 and SMU 34-10 on the road.
The Cardinal were on a bye in Week 6. In Week 7, they failed to cover a 19.5-point spread at SMU. The Mustangs barely outgained the Cardinal in total yards, 369-353, but won the turnover battle 2-0. Moreover, Stanford committed 10 penalties for 95 yards.
Senior QB Ben Gulbranson threw for 278 yards, a touchdown, and an interception against SMU. Gulbranson completed just 22 of his 40 passing attempts and was sacked six times. Senior wideout CJ Williams had seven catches for 109 yards and a TD, while freshman RB Cole Tabb posted nine carries for 62 yards.
“I'm not walking out of here thinking that these guys are in a different league than us,” interim Stanford coach Frank Reich said. “Where the Mustang program is going, I have a lot of respect for where that program is going. But I'm not walking out of here thinking, 'Well, they're just better than us.'”
Stanford is 1-2 in conference play. The Cardinal score just 18.8 points per game (tied for 120th in the country) and surrender 30.2 points in return (118th). Gulbranson has tossed for 1,445 yards, six touchdowns, and four interceptions thus far, while Williams has caught 35 passes for 404 yards and a touchdown. Sophomore RB Micah Ford has 91 carries, 400 rushing yards, and three touchdowns on his season tally.
Florida State vs. Stanford Pick
Spread Pick for Florida State vs. Stanford
- Florida State -17.5 (5 units)
The Seminoles should get tight end Randy Pittman Jr. back, which would be a huge boost for their offense. Offensive tackle Micah Pettus is questionable to play against Stanford, while linebacker Stefon Thompson is out, but the Seminoles have enough weapons to dominate the lowly Cardinal, who have injury worries, too.
Stanford has three offensive linemen and two cornerbacks listed as questionable. The Cardinal will struggle to run the ball efficiently against the Seminoles, who allow 116.3 rushing yards per game and just 3.2 yards per carry. Moreover, Stanford allows a staggering 303.7 passing yards per game, so I’m backing Florida State to win and cover.
Over/Under Pick for Florida State vs. Stanford
- Over 53.5 (5 units)
Florida State leans on its dynamic offense, and the Cardinal won’t be able to slow the Seminoles down. The Seminoles tally 262.0 passing yards (41st in the nation) and 274.5 rushing yards per game (5th). Their offense should have a field day, given the way the Cardinals’ defense has been playing lately.
Stanford will struggle to move chains frequently, but the Cardinal should be able to surpass a 10-point mark. That should be enough to push the total over the line. Stanford has scored 30 points in each of its two home contests this season, though Florida State is arguably a better defensive team than Boston College and San Jose State.
