Georgia Firmly in the Playoff Picture

The Georgia Bulldogs won their third straight game over visiting Ole Miss, 43-35, two weeks ago to improve to 6-1 on the season heading into their bye week. The win improved the team to a perfect 7-0 at home against Top-10 teams with Kirby Smart as head coach. In a game driven by offense, it was the Bulldogs’ defense that shut down the Rebels down the stretch to pull out the victory.

"That's a culture win because you don't win that game if you're not physically tough, mentally tough. We call it hard to kill. And the one thing we are, we're hard to kill. We won't go away," Smart said after the hard-fought win.

Quarterback Gunner Stockton continued his steady rise, going 26-of-31 for 289 yards and a career-high four touchdowns. The Bulldogs also found their ground game, rushing for 221 yards on 49 carries as a team. Nate Frazier led the way with 72 yards rushing. In all, the Bulldogs had 510 yards of total offense. They also held a 15-minute advantage in time of possession. That factor was most apparent late in the game, with the more rested Bulldogs’ defense able to make crucial stops.

After allowing the Rebels to march up and down the field for much of the game, the Bulldogs shut them out in the fourth quarter, allowing the offense to make up ground. Georgia allowed 355 yards of total offense to the Rebels, but only 88 yards on the ground. The defense did not record any sacks, turnovers, or tackles for loss in the game. CJ Allen led the way with 10 tackles.

The Bulldogs, with one loss, are still very much in the playoff picture heading into the home stretch of the season. They are ranked fifth in the country and come into this matchup with three straight wins. They are ranked 18th in the nation in points per game. They are 40th in the country in rushing and 60th in passing. The Bulldogs are 24th in red zone offense. The team protects the quarterback well, ranked 22nd in sacks allowed per game. Defensively, this has been a slightly down year for the usually stout Bulldogs’ unit. The team ranks 35th in scoring defense. They have done tough on the run, ranked 16th against the run. The Bulldogs have struggled against the pass, ranked 81st in the nation. They are 22nd in red zone defense and just 127th in sacks per game. The Bulldogs are 39th in penalty yards per game. The team is 64th in turnover margin.

Key Injuries: WR Thomas Blacksheer, QB Ryan Montgomery, RB Roderick Robinson II, and WR Colbie Young are questionable.

Florida Looks for Major Upset

The Florida Gators were able to pull out a victory two weeks ago in Gainesville, 23-21, over Mississippi State. The victory, however, did not save the job of head coach Billy Napier. After a 3-4 start, the team decided to move on from Napier and named Billy Gonzalez the interim head coach heading into this week’s showdown with rival Georgia in Jacksonville.

"If we can continue to focus on ourselves, that's the most important piece to it right now," Gonzales said. "For us, we're approaching it as it's a great atmosphere to go play up in Jacksonville, but it's a game that, again, if we can focus on ourselves and make those improvements, that's what  we need to do."

The Gators were led by running back Jadan Baugh, who finished with a career-high 150 yards and a touchdown. Quarterback DJ Lagway completed 20-of-34 passes for 280 yards but was intercepted twice in the game. Kicker Trey Smack bailed out the Gators with three field goals, including a 53-yard field goal in the fourth quarter that was the difference in the game. The Gators finished with 450 yards of total offense in the victory.

The Gators’ defense came up big when it had to seal the win. Sophomore defensive tackle Michai Boireau made the play of the game with Mississippi State driving for the go-ahead score. He picked off a pass with 21 seconds left in the game to secure the victory. Florida’s defense played a bend but don’t break style all game, allowing 468 yards of total offense, including 324 yards through the air. Alfonzo Allen Jr. led the team with 15 tackles.

The Gators now will try to navigate the final third of their schedule, hoping to earn a bowl bid. They need three more victories to do so with just five games left on the schedule. Florida comes into this contest ranked just 124th in scoring offense. The Gators are 85th in rushing and 66th in passing. They are ranked first in the country in red zone offense. The Gators are 84th in sacks allowed per game. Defensively, the Gators are 50th in scoring defense. They are 38th in the country against the run and 96th against the pass. The Gators are ranked 45th in red zone defense. They are 57th in sacks per game thus far. The team is 82nd in penalty yards per game and just 117th in turnover margin.

Key Injuries: DE LJ McCrary is out. DL Caleb Barnes, WR Vernell Brown III, RB Duke Clark, RB Ja’Kobi Jackson, TE Tony Livingston, WR Aiden Mizell, WR Muizz Tounkaren, and RB Treyawn Webb are questionable.

Georgia Bulldogs vs. Florida Pick

Point Spread pick for Georgia vs. Florida

  • Georgia -7.5

The line here suggests a close game, but it seems unlikely. Georgia head coach Smart has won seven of his nine matchups against the Gators since taking over in Georgia. In the last 15 matchups between the two schools, only five have been one-score games. Smart and the Bulldogs have won those seven games by an average of 21 points. Smart will have the coaching edge on Saturday against a Florida staff trying to finish out the season before the administration looks for its next head coach. Defensively, Florida can almost match up evenly with the Bulldogs, but it's not close on the offensive side of the ball. Florida is just 124th in the country in points per game. They are 85th on the ground, which doesn’t bode well against the Bulldogs’ 16th-ranked run defense. That should allow the Bulldogs to focus on the pass in this one. Georgia is also tough in the red zone, ranking 22nd in red zone defense. Georgia wants a return trip to the playoffs, and a win here is a must. They’ll be ready to go.

Take Georgia -7.5

Over/Under Pick for Georgia at Florida

  • Under 50.5 (4 units)

These two teams have gone over this number in four of their last five matchups. The Bulldogs have gone under this number in three of their last five games. Florida has gone under this number in four of five games. Florida is also just 124th in the country in scoring. Georgia should be able to keep the Gators out of the end zone and roll to a comfortable win that stays under the number.

Take the over.
