Bulldogs Look to Down Vols for Ninth Straight Time

Georgia downed Austin Peay at home last week, though it was less than inspiring as they failed to cover the line. The Bulldogs improved to 2-0 on the season and look to take down Tennessee for the ninth straight meeting here. Against Austin Peay, Georgia took a 7-0 lead midway through the first quarter and didn’t look back. The Bulldogs didn’t let the Governors make a serious push and it seemed the weather was more of a foe than Austin Peay. Georgia held a 421-196 edge in total offense, owned a 26-10 advantage in first downs and controlled the clock by a 33:09 to 26:51 margin. Those numbers offset the fact that the Bulldogs turned the ball over twice while forcing one takeaway.

On the season, Georgia stands 60th in the nation in passing offense (240 ypg) and 34th in rushing offense with 214.5 yards per contest. The Bulldogs are 42nd in the FBS in scoring offense with 36.5 points per game on the season while the team is 9th in scoring defense as they allow 6.5 points a game. Gunner Stockton (40 of 58, 417 yards, two TD, 86 rush yards, two TD) is the team’s signal caller. Ryan Puglisi (six of 10, 63 yards, TD, 13 rush yards) is the backup quarterback. Nate Frazier leads the team on the ground with 25 carries for 116 yards and two scores this season. Dwight Phillips Jr. (12 carries, 115 yards, TD) and Chauncey Bowens (17 carries, 89 yards, two TD) have also been effective. Colbie Young leads the team with nine receptions for 106 yards on the season. Zechariah Branch (six catches, 112 yards, TD), Cash Jones (four grabs, 44 yards) and London Humphreys (six receptions, 37 yards, TD) are the only other players with more than three grabs. Peyton Woodring is 10 of 10 on extra point attempts and hit his lone field goal attempt, which came from 43 yards, this year.

Tennessee Seeking to Start Season 3-0

Tennessee rolled past East Tennessee State in their previous contest as they took care of business at home. The Volunteers improved to 2-0 on the year and look to start conference play on the right foot. Against East Tennessee State, Tennessee scored less than two minutes into the game and rolled from there. The Volunteers were up 24-0 after the opening quarter and 48-7 at the half en route to the victory. Tennessee piled up a 734-216 advantage in total offense, racked up a 41-10 margin in first downs, and controlled the clock by a 35:02 to 24:58 margin. There were no turnovers in the contest.

The Volunteers are good offensively this season as they are 8th in passing offense as they average 352.5 yards per game through the air. Tennessee is 20th in rushing offense as they put up an average of 252.5 yards per contest on the ground. The Volunteers are 4th of the 136 FBS teams to take the field this season in scoring offense as they average 58.5 points per contest. Tennessee is 76th in scoring defense as they allowed an average of 21.5 points a contest. Joey Aguilar has hit 39 of 59 passes for 535 yards with five scores against no interceptions while adding 34 yards on the ground on the year. George MacIntyre (six of seven, 52 yards, 15 rush yards) and Jake Merklinger (nine of 14, 118 yards, two TD, 17 rush yards) are next in line on the depth chart. Star Thomas leads the team with 24 carries for 161 yards and three scores this season. DeSean Bishop (14 carries, 150 yards, TD), Peyton Lewis (16 carries, 57 yards, two TD), Daune Morris (11 carries, 50 yards, TD) and Justin Baker (11 carries, 37 yards) have been efficient sharing the load. Chris Brazzell II leads the team with 14 receptions for 187 yards plus two scores this season. Mike Matthews (eight catches, 140 yards, two TD), Braylon Staley (nine grabs, 134 yards, TD) and Miles Kitselman (five receptions, 46 yards, TD) are the only players with more than three catches this season. Max Gilbert has connected on all 12 extra point attempts and four of four field goal attempts with a long of 53 this season. Josh Turbyville has hit all three extra point attempts while not attempting a field goal on the year.

Spread Pick for Georgia vs. Tennessee

  • Georgia -3.5 (4 units)

Georgia was uninspiring in their win over Austin Peay last week, but the weather was also a factor in that contest. With that said, the Bulldogs have surrendered just 13 points in their two games this season. Meanwhile, Tennessee has piled up 117 points in its two wins, but they have given up 43 points in those games. It’s safe to say that Georgia is a better squad than both Syracuse and East Tennessee State at this point. Throw in Kirby Smart’s success at downing Tennessee and that the closest game between the two in the Bulldogs’ eight-game win streak in the series is 14 points, you have to back Georgia here.

Over/Under Pick for Georgia vs. Tennessee

  • Under 49.5 (4 units)

Georgia enters this game with the under posting a 1-0-1 mark on the season. The Bulldogs pushed the number of 52 points in their season-opening win over Marshall. Georgia followed that up with 34 combined points against a number of 55.5 points in the game against Austin Peay. Tennessee cruised past the number in both its contests this season. The Volunteers put up a total of 71 points against a number of 52 in the win over Syracuse. Last week, Tennessee saw a total of 89 points against a number of 58.5 points in the win over East Tennessee State. Two of the last three meetings between the teams have stayed under the total, with last year’s meeting just going past the mark with 48 combined points to slip past the mark of 47. Look for Georgia’s defense to slow Tennessee down and keep this game short of the mark.
