Is Georgia Tech a legit Top-10 team?
Georgia Tech has been one of the seasonโs biggest surprises, surging to an 8-0 start and a spot in the top 10 of the polls. They are coming off three straight covers with the latest being a 41-16 win over Syracuse. Against the spread, the Yellow Jackets are 6-2 ATS overall and 4-1 ATS in ACC games. They are 5-0 in the ACC for the first time since joining the league in 1983.

Overall, the Yellow Jackets' offense ranks 16th nationally at 472.5 total yards and 26th in scoring at 36 points per game. They are 12th in the country in rushing yards per game (229.8) and 59th in passing (242.8). Quarterback Haynes King leads the way with 1,480 passing yards on seven touchdown passes and one interception to go along with a team-best 651 rushing yards and 12 touchdowns. He is also eighth in the country with an 84.7 QBR.
On defense, Georgia Tech is only 74th, allowing 371.5 yards per game. They rank 62nd against the pass (216.3 ypg) and 86th against the run (155.3 ypg). Injuries are more of a concern on defense than offense, but they are relatively healthy after the Syracuse game.
Can NC State pull off the upset?
The Wolfpack have been inconsistent this season, sitting at 4-4 overall and 3-5 against the spread. After opening the year 3-0, NC State has dropped four of its last five games, including a 53-34 loss at Pittsburgh last week. Their lone win during that stretch came against FCS Campbell. It doesn't get any easier after this game as they go on the road to face No. 10 Miami.
Offensively, the Wolfpack have shown flashes but lack balance. They rank 46th nationally in total offense (420.5 ypg), powered by a strong passing game (270.0 ypg, 31st) but an average ground attack (150.5 ypg, 74th). NC State scores 30.5 points per game, ranking 56th nationally. Quarterback C.J. Bailey has been the bright spot for NC State. The sophomore is completing 70.2% of his passes for 2,071 yards, 17 touchdowns, and seven interceptions. He is also 20th in the country with a 76.4 QBR.
Defensively, the Wolfpack have struggled to get stops. They allow 408.0 total yards per game (103rd), including a concerning 278.0 passing yards allowed (130th). The run defense has been better, ranking 49th at 130.0 yards per game, but overall, they give up 29.9 points per contest, ranking 106th.
Georgia Tech vs. NC State Predictions
Spread Pick for Georgia Tech vs. NC State
- NC State +6.5 (4 units)
This isnโt a bad matchup for NC State.ย On offense, the Wolfpack will look to let C.J. Bailey air it out, while the Yellow Jackets' offense is led by their powerful ground game. When it comes to defending its opponents' strength, NC State ranks 74th defensively, allowing 4.4 yards per rush attempt, but itโs also faced the nationโs 34th-toughest schedule. As for Georgia Tech, the Yellow Jackets rank 72nd in yards allowed per pass attempt but have faced only the 82nd-rated strength of schedule. I think this is a good sign for NC State.
With home-field advantage and a tougher resume of opponents under their belt, I think the Wolfpack will be ready for a Georgia Tech team that has had close calls against Colorado and Wake Forest this season. NC State went to Atlanta and covered the number last year as an underdog, and I expect them to compete at home in this one as well.
Total Pick for Georgia Tech vs. NC State
- Over 58.5 (4 units)
As high as this number is, I have more faith in the offenses. Neither team has been elite defensively, and I find it hard to see NC State getting consistent stops against Georgia Techโs balanced offensive attack led by Haynes King. On the other side, I think C.J. Bailey will have success throwing the ball.
Last season, these teams combined for 59 points after scoring just 23 through the first three quarters. I think the door is open for late fireworks again, so Iโll take the over.
