Road test for Georgia Tech

The Yellow Jackets wrapped up their nonconference schedule last weekend with a 45-24 win over Temple at Bobby Dodd Stadium at Hyundai Field. Georgia Tech dominated offensively, averaging just under 10 yards per play in the victory. Georgia Tech is now 4-0 to start the season, the first time the team has started 4-0 since 2014.

“But we've got things we've got to clean up there. We can't have those stall-outs. We can't have those ebbs and flows in the game. Anybody can see that and know that. So, we came out of the game pretty healthy, I believe, and we'll see where that goes. But we've got to improve our play to be able to continue the momentum we have and continue to win games we have to win.” head coach Brent Key said about his team’s uneven performance against the Owls.

Georgia Tech was led by running back Jamal Haynes, who led the team with 107 yards rushing on just 12 carries. Haynes also had 39 yards receiving on four catches. Fellow running back Malachi Hosley had 59 yards rushing on just five carries with two touchdowns. Quarterback Haynes King went 13-of-18 passing for 161 yards and two touchdowns. He also ran for a 17-yard touchdown. In all, the Yellow Jackets had 468 yards of total offense.

Big Test for Wake Forest

The Wake Forest Demon Deacons fell for the first time this season two weeks ago in a 34-24 loss to NC State at Allegacy Stadium. The loss was not only the first of the season for the Deacs, but it was also their first home loss, dropping them to 0-1 in the ACC this season. After a bye week, Wake will try to get back into the win column as it welcomes the undefeated Yellow Jackets this Saturday afternoon.

"Obviously a disappointing result. Give a lot of credit to NC State. We just weren't able to establish anything offensively in the second half and you give up 200 yards rushing, you're going to have some problems. But I'm really proud of our team. I don't want that to be lost in tonight. I'm really proud of our team. We're a better football team today than we were at this time in game one. There's no doubt about it. And we're going to be able to compete with everybody in this league. I'm proud of this team.” head coach Jake Dickert said after the game.

Wake was led by exciting wide receiver/return man Chris Barnes. He finished with 177 all-purpose yards, including a 98-yard kick return and a 70-yard catch to set up another score. Quarterback Robby Ashford finished the game 21-of-35 passing for 252 yards without a touchdown. He also threw two interceptions. He also rushed for 27 yards on nine carries and ran for a touchdown. Running back Demond Clairborne rushed 12 times for 36 yards and a touchdown, his fourth of the season. The offense stalled in the second half, however, going scoreless over the final 30 minutes. In all, the Demon Deacons had 311 yards of total offense and turned the ball over twice.

Defensively, Wake allowed over 400 yards of total offense to NC State. The Deacs allowed an average of 5.5 yards per play in the game. Safety Nick Andersen led the way with 11 tackles in the game. Dylan Hazen chipped in with nine tackles, including 3.5 tackles for loss. Wake did not force any turnovers in the contest.

The Demon Deacons are just 167th in the nation in points per game this season. They are 123rd in the country on the ground and 59th through the air. Wake is 72nd in red zone offense and 98th in sacks allowed per game. Defensively, Wake is 45th in the country in points allowed per game. They are 93rd against the run and 26th against the pass. The Deacs are 81st in the country in red zone defense. They are 87th in sacks per game. Wake is 111th in penalties per game, 105th in turnover margin, and 96th in time of possession.

Key Injuries: DL Kerrington Lee, WR Wesley Stroebel, and WR Ian Ver Steeg are out.

Georgia Tech at Wake Forest

Point Spread pick for Georgia Tech  vs. Wake Forest

  • Georgia Tech -13.5 (4 units)

Georgia Tech rides into Wake Forest with the momentum of the team’s first 4-0 start in over a decade. The Yellow Jackets should be able to exploit Wake’s below-average run defense, ranked just 93rd in the country. The Demon Deacons won’t help themselves with execution either. They rank just 111th in the nation in penalties per game. They are also just 105th in the country in turnover margin. The Yellow Jackets have too dynamic an offense for Wake to keep up with. Georgia Tech is ranked 36th in the country in scoring, while the Demon Deacons are just 107th in the nation in scoring. The Yellow Jackets will build a lead on Saturday, and Wake will not have the offense to get back in the game.

Take Georgia Tech -13.5

Over/Under Pick for Georgia Tech vs. Wake Forest

  • Under 52.5

Combined, the two teams have gone under this number in four of their seven games. The Demon Deacons are just 107th in the nation in scoring this season. They were just shut out in the second half at home by NC State. The Yellow Jackets will do most of the offensive damage in this game, ranked 36th in scoring. They also have a solid defense to keep Wake out of the end zone. Expect a one-sided win by Georgia Tech, but one that falls under the number.

Take the over.
