Bulldogs Looking for Back-to-Back Crowns

The No. 3 Georgia Bulldogs (11-1, 7-1 SEC) are back in familiar territory, battling for the SEC title. They are also facing a common opponent, as they get set to take on a common opponent, the Alabama Crimson Tide. Georgia has faced Alabama four times for the SEC Championship, with the Tide winning all four games. Additionally, Alabama defeated Georgia earlier this season for the Bulldogs' only loss. The stakes will be high when they meet again on Saturday.

ā€œWe're excited. We're going to play a really talented Alabama football team. A lot of respect for Coach DeBoer and the job they've done. They've gone through a really tough season as well in terms of the teams they've played, even through last night. Both teams didn't back their way into this thing. They earned it. Should be a great game with a lot of talented players in a great venue. We're looking forward to it.ā€ Head coach Kirby Smart said about facing Alabama.

Junior quarterback Gunner Stockton leads the Bulldogs’ offense. Stockton has completed 70 percent of his passes for 2,535 yards and 20 touchdowns. He’s only thrown five interceptions on the season. Stockton can run as well, with 403 yards and eight touchdowns. The Bulldogs’ backfield features Nate Frazier, averaging 5.6 yards per carry this year. In all, he’s rushed for 809 yards and five scores. Zachariah Branch has more than double the catches of any wide receiver on the roster with 68 catches for 691 yards and four scores. Tight ends Oscar Delp, Lawson Luckie, and Elyiss Williams have combined for 37 catches and six touchdowns.

The Bulldogs’ defense, while not as dominant as in years past, is still very formidable. Linebacker CJ Allen leads the team with 80 tackles and 3.5 sacks. Fellow linebacker Raylen Wilson has 65 tackles and 2.5 sacks. The Bulldogs’ secondary has been vulnerable at times this season, and will have to step up against a solid ā€˜Bama passing attack. Defensive back KJ Bolden has 63 tackles and two interceptions this season. Defensive back Ellis Robinson IV leads the team with four interceptions to go along with five passes defensed.

The Bulldogs will be in the College Football Playoffs, win or lose, but don’t discount their pride in trying to take down the Crimson Tide for the first time in an SEC Championship game. The Bulldogs come in ranked 22nd in the nation in points per game. They are 41st in rushing and 67th in passing. The Bulldogs rank 39th in red zone attempts and 21st in red zone scores. Georgia is 24th in the country in sacks allowed this season. Defensively, the Bulldogs are 12th in points allowed per game. They are 13th against the run and 46th against the pass. The Bulldogs rank 15th in red zone defense. The team is 22nd in penalty yards per game, 66th in turnover margin, and just 117th in sacks per game. The Bulldogs are 13th in scoring margin this season.

Key Injuries for Georgia

  • C Drew Bobo, WR Talyn Taylor, DB Kyron Jones, and RB Chauncey Bowens are questionable.

Crimson Tide Win and They’re In

The No. 9 Alabama Crimson Tide (10-2, 7-1 SEC) has plenty to play for when it battles Georgia in Atlanta on Saturday. The Crimson Tide is 10-2 on the season, and a loss here could eliminate them from playoff contention. They come in confidently, having beaten Georgia earlier this season, 24-21, in Athens, GA.

ā€œLooking forward to Saturday and the opportunity and challenge to face Georgia again this year. It's going to be an awesome environment, one our guys are excited about already. Really looking forward to it.ā€ Head coach Kalen DeBoer said this week.

The Crimson Tide has been led by one of the top passing attacks in the country this season. The leader is junior quarterback Ty Simpson, who has thrown for 3,056 yards and 25 touchdowns, with just four interceptions. The ā€˜Bama rushing attack has been a committee this season. The team has three running backs with over 200 yards rushing, led by Jam Miller. Miller has rushed for 493 yards and four touchdowns. Kevin Riley and Daniel Hill have combined for nearly 450 yards rushing and seven touchdowns. The wide receiver group is as good as any in the country. Germie Bernard leads the team with 51 catches, while speedster Ryan Williams has 40 catches and averages nearly 15 yards per catch. Isaiah Horton and Lotzeir Brooks have combined for 60 catches. Tight end Josh Cuevas has 30 catches and four touchdowns this season, but his status is uncertain for the title game.

Three players have 50 or more tackles for the Crimson Tide this season. Linebacker Justin Jefferson leads the team with 63 tackles and also has two sacks and an interception. Linebacker Deontae Lawson is right behind him with 60 tackles. Defensive back Bray Hubbard has 53 tackles and leads the team with four interceptions. Linebacker Yhonzae Pierre has 39 tackles and leads the Crimson Tide with six sacks. Defensive lineman LT Overton is second on the team in sacks with four.

Alabama will go all out on Saturday, hoping for an automatic bid to the playoffs with a win. The Crimson Tide comes in ranked 26th in the nation in points per game. They are just 115th in the country in rushing, but an impressive 17th in the nation in passing. The Tide ranks 33rd in red zone opportunities this season and 20th in red zone scores. They are 82nd in the country in sacks allowed. On the defensive side of the ball, the Crimson Tide ranks 13th in points allowed per game. They are 57th against the run and 11th against the pass. Alabama has the 15th-best red zone defense in the nation. The team ranks 31st in penalty yards per game, 13th in turnover margin, and 67th in sacks per game. They are 16th in the country in scoring margin.

Key Injuries for Alabama:

  • TE Josh Cuevas is doubtful. WR Jam Miller is questionable.

Georgia vs. Alabama Pick and Prediction

Point Spread pick for Georgia vs. AlabamaĀ

  • Alabama +2.5 (4 units)

The first matchup between these two teams went from an offensive explosion in the first half to a defensive struggle in the second half. The Crimson Tide scored all 24 of its points in the first half and hung on for a 24-21 victory. Bama’s ability to protect the ball was key. The team didn’t commit any turnovers, while Georgia lost a fumble. On the season, the Bulldogs were just 66th in turnover margin. The Crimson Tide finished 13th in the nation in turnover margin. Georgia will try to pound the ball against the Bama defense here, while the Tide will come after the Bulldogs’ vulnerable pass defense. Georgia’s inability to get to the quarterback will be its undoing on Saturday. Don’t discount the urgency of the Tide here, needing the win to get back to the College Football Playoffs after missing out last season. The Crimson Tide will get the job done and earn their 9th trip to the College Football Playoffs, an all-time high.

Take Alabama +2.5

Over/Under Pick for Georgia vs. AlabamaĀ

  • Over 47.5 (4 units)

The over has hit in the SEC Championship game in four of the last five matchups. Despite going under the number in their matchup this season, Georgia and Alabama have gone over the number in all four SEC title matchups. The fast track in Atlanta will play well, particularly for Alabama’s passing attack. The Bulldogs will have to throw the ball to keep up, which will help propel this game over the number.

Take the under.
