The Warriors are riding a three-game winning streak. They sandwiched a 44-26 home victory over Utah State with a pair of road wins at Air Force 44-35 and Colorado State 31-19. Now, the Warriors are third in the MWC with a 3-1 record.
Hawaii tortured Colorado State in Week 8. The Warriors outgained the Rams 435-261 in total yards while going 7-for-14 on 3rd down. Freshman QB Micah Alejado threw for 301 yards, three touchdowns, and an interception, while sophomore WR Jackson Harris had five receptions for 109 yards and two touchdowns.
The Warriors lean on their passing offense, and Alejado has thrown for 1,757 yards, 12 touchdowns, and six interceptions across six appearances this season. Harris and senior WR Pofele Ashlock have combined for 961 receiving yards and 11 touchdowns, while senior RB Landon Sims has amassed 595 yards from scrimmage and three touchdowns.
Hawaii scores 28.6 points per game (72nd in the nation) and allows 23.3 points in return (tied for 57th). The Warriors’ defense ranks 38th in the nation in passing yards (196.4 per game) and is tied with San Jose State for 42nd in rushing yards (127.3).
San Jose State wants to snap a two-game skid
The San Jose State Spartans (2-5; 3-4 ATS; 4-3 O/U) have struggled for most of the season, especially on the defensive side of the ball. They started the league play with a 35-28 home win to New Mexico in Week 6, but followed it with a couple of road losses against Wyoming, 35-2,8 and Utah State, 30-25.
San Jose State visited Utah State last time out. The Spartans outgained the Aggies 534-461 in total yards, but it wasn’t enough. SJSU failed to score in the final 11:56 of the fourth quarter, while Utah State hit a couple of field goals in that span.
Senior QB Walker Eget tortured Utah State for 340 yards and two touchdowns. Freshman RB Steve Chavez-Soto posted 11 carries for 102 yards and a touchdown, junior WR Leland Smith had four receptions for 116 yards and a TD, and fellow junior WR Kyri Shoels caught seven passes for 104 yards.
Eget has already thrown for 2,149 yards and 15 touchdowns this season. He’s been intercepted just three times. Sophomore wideout Danny Scudero leads the receiving corps with 56 catches for 870 yards and eight touchdowns, while Shoels and Smith have combined for 864 receiving yards and five touchdowns.
The Spartans score 24.1 points per game (tied for 94th in the nation) and surrender 29.3 points in return (99th). Their passing defense has been awful so far this season, yielding 298.1 yards per game (134th).
Hawaii vs. San Jose State Pick
Spread Pick for Hawaii vs. San Jose State
- Hawaii +2.5 (5 units)
Both teams heavily lean on their passing offense and defend well against the rush. The Warriors’ passing defense is arguably much better than the Spartans’, so I have to go with Hawaii.
The Rainbow Warriors have won their last two road games, and Micah Alejado has thrown for 758 yards, three touchdowns, and an interception across those two contests. I expect more of the same when they take on the Spartans.
Hawaii has beaten the number in five of its previous six games overall, and the Warriors are 5-0 ATS in their last five showings in conference play. On the other side, the Spartans are just 1-8 ATS in their last nine games against the MWC.
Over/Under Pick for Hawaii vs. San Jose State
- Over 58.5 (5 units)
The line has been set pretty high. The bookies expect a lot of throwing in this game, and I can’t argue about that. Both teams defend well against rushing, so they will lean on passing heavily.
As I said, the Spartans’ passing defense has been awful all season. The Rainbow Warriors have accounted for 119 points over their past three games, and they could easily hit a 40-point mark in this game.
The Spartans have scored at least 25 points in five straight outings, and the over has hit four times during that stretch. Hereof, I have to go with the over.
