Fighting Illini Seeking 2-0 Start
Illinois had little trouble dismantling Western Illinois in its season opener at home last Friday. The Fighting Illini now look to down a power conference foe on the road as they search for a 2-0 start. Against Western Illinois, Illinois scored a pair of touchdowns in three minutes to take a 14-0 lead after the opening quarter and rolled from there. The Fighting Illini were up 31-0 at the half and 38-0 after three quarters before cruising the rest of the way. Illinois rolled up a 440-163 edge in total offense, picked up 21 first downs while allowing 11, owned a 32:18 to 27:42 margin in time of possession and forced the game’s only turnover.
Luke Altmyer was sharp in his season debut, completing 17 of 21 passes for 217 yards and three touchdowns in the game. Ethan Hampton completed his lone pass attempt for 14 yards. Aidan Laughery led the ground attack with nine carries for 101 yards and two scores in the game. Kaden Feagin (13 carries, 74 yards, TD) and Ca’Lil Valentine (nine carries, 51 yards) were also efficient as the Fighting Illini rolled up 209 yards on the ground. In the passing game, Hank Beatty hauled in a team-high five passes for 108 yards. Justin Bowick (three catches, 23 yards, two TD), Malik Elzy (two grabs, 25 yards), Laughery (two catches, 22 yards) and Tanner Arkin (two receptions, 14 yards, TD) also caught multiple passes in the game. Beatty scored on a 69-yard punt return while breaking Red Grange’s school record for punt return yards in a game with 133, breaking Grange’s mark of 125 set against Nebraska on October 6, 1923. David Olano hit all seven extra point attempts and one of two field goal attempts, hitting from 35 yards and missing from 28 yards on a kick that was blocked.
Duke Looking to Prevail at Home
Duke rolled past Elon in their season opener, though it took a spirited second-half performance to put away the Phoenix. The Blue Devils now have a stiff increase in competition here as they hope to earn a win over a ranked foe in Durham. Against Elon, Duke led just 3-0 after the opening quarter and found themselves even at 10 at the half before getting in gear. The Blue Devils outscored the Phoenix 14-0 in the third quarter to go up 24-10 and put the game away after Elon made it a seven-point game with 14:12 to play. Duke racked up a 548-275 edge in total offense and picked up 23 first downs while allowing 14. That helped the Blue Devils overcome losing time of possession by a 32:53 to 27:07 margin and committing the game’s only turnover.
Darian Mensah, in his first game since transferring from Tulane, had a big game in his debut. He completed 27 of 34 passes for 389 yards and three scores in the contest. Anderson Castle led the Blue Devils in the run game as he racked up 69 yards on three carries. Jaquez Moore (seven carries, 44 yards, TD), Peyton Jones (eight carries, 28 yards, TD) and Nate Sheppard (five carries, 28 yards) also saw work in the ground attack. Que’Sean Brown led the team as he reeled in six passes for 93 yards in the game. Cooper Barkate (five catches, 117 yards), Sahmir Huggins (five grabs, 54 yards, two TD), Andrel Anthony (three receptions, 51 yards, TD) and Jayden Moore (three grabs, 22 yards) were each active in the passing game. Todd Pelino drilled all six extra point attempts and was one of two on field goal attempts, connecting from 41 yards while misfiring from 45 yards in the game.
Illinois vs. Duke Pick
Spread Pick for Illinois vs. Duke
- Illinois Fighting Illini -2.5 (4 units)
Both teams won in one-sided fashion in their respective openers, though they went about it in different ways. Illinois jumped in front early and pounded Western Illinois into submission. Meanwhile, Duke was even at the half with an FCS program and led by seven a minute into the fourth quarter before pulling away. We saw Illinois have a balanced offensive attack and they could put Duke in a tough spot. Mensah needed a big game to get by Elon and the Blue Devils face a stouter challenge here. Illinois will be tested as the visiting team but the experience factor, led by Altmyer, carries them to a win in a tight contest.
Over/Under Pick for Illinois vs. Duke
Under 49 (4 units)
Each team piled up points in their respective opening contests. Despite putting up a 50-burger in the win over Western Illinois, the Fighting Illini fell short of the number in their win over the Leathernecks as the teams combined for 55 points against a number of 62.5 points. Duke went over the mark in their season opener as they combined for 62 points with Elon last Thursday. That went past the number of 51 points set by the books. Seeing that both defenses were solid at limiting points allowed, look for scoring to be a bit harder to come by, keeping this game short of the total.
