Illinois finishes perfect in non-conference action
The Illinois Fighting Illini come into conference play with a perfect 3-0 mark and are ranked ninth in the country. They stayed perfect last week with a 38-0 shutout win over Western Michigan at Geis Memorial Stadium. The win gives them seven straight victories, tied with defending National Champion Ohio State for the most consecutive wins in the country.
"Excited to get out of there with the 'W.' Obviously didn't go according to plan in the first half. I give a lot of credit to Western Michigan. ... A really good football team that did a lot of good things. At halftime, we came in and kind of had some conversations about where we needed to go. And I thought our guys responded very, very well defensively at the end of the half there – to make that stop was huge.” head coach Bret Bielema said after the game.
Illinois led just 10-0 at the half, but a balanced offensive attack, led by quarterback Luke Altmyer, wore down Western Michigan in the second half. Altmyer went 17-of-26 for 196 yards and two touchdowns. He also added a rushing touchdown. Hank Beatty led the Fighting Illini in receiving with six catches for 53 yards and his first touchdown of the year. Ashton Hollins added two catches for 41 yards and his first career touchdown. On the ground, Kaden Feagin finished with over 100 yards rushing on 20 carries, while fellow running back Ca’Lil Valentine added 63 yards on ten carries. Each scored a touchdown. In all, the Fighting Illini had 358 yards of total offense.
The Fighting Illini’s defense was solid on Saturday, shutting out Western Michigan. Malachi Hood and Matthew Bailey led the team with six tackles each. Xavier Scott had three tackles, including a career-high 1.5 tackles for loss. Leon Lowery Jr. registered his first career sack in the game. The defense allowed just 204 yards of total offense, including just 94 yards through the air. The Fighting Illini had five tackles for loss, including two sacks.
The Fighting Illini are 3-0 as they head into Indiana, trying to upend a team that has seemingly had their number over the last five meetings. Illinois is just 1-4 in its last five meetings with the Hoosiers. They come into this contest ranked 14th in the nation in points per game. Illinois is 89th in rushing and 47th in passing. They have converted all their red zone opportunities thus far this season. Defensively, the team is 10th in points allowed per contest. The Fighting Illini are 62nd against the run and 62nd against the pass. They are 17th in red zone defense thus far. They are 66th in the nation in penalties per game and 25th in time of possession. Illinois has yet to commit a turnover this season, ranking 2nd in the nation in turnover margin.
Key Injuries: RB John Forster is out. RB Aiden Loughery is questionable.
Hoosiers back in Top 20
Thus far in 2025, the Indiana Hoosiers are proving that their success in 2024 was not a fluke. The team is 3-0 and ranked 19th in the nation, heading into this week’s home showdown with Illinois in the Big Ten Conference opener for both schools. The Hoosiers throttled Indiana State 73-0 at home last week.
"We're taking the steps we need to take," head coach Curt Cignetti said. "We have a lot of guys who have played a lot of football.
"We've been able to build on success and create positive intangibles. We did what we wanted to do. I was pleased to see that. I didn't see anyone relaxing, coaches or players."
Quarterback Fernando Mendoza led the way with a dominant performance against the Sycamores. He finished the night 19-of-20 for 270 yards and a career-high five touchdown passes. Mendoza completed each of his first 14 passes in the win. He added a rushing touchdown in the dominant performance. The primary beneficiary of Mendoza’s passing was wide receiver Omar Cooper Jr. Cooper Jr. had six catches in the first quarter alone for 69 yards and two scores. At halftime, he had nine catches for 149 yards and three touchdowns. He finished the game with 10 catches for 207 yards and a career-high four touchdowns. Overall, the Hoosiers had 680 yards of total offense, including a whopping 301 on the ground.
The Indiana defense continued its dominant start, pitching its first shutout of the season. The Hoosiers have held their first three opponents to a combined 23 points. They held Indiana State to a total of 77 yards in the game, including just 10 yards in the first half. They had five sacks in the game and 16 tackles for loss. In their last two games, the Hoosiers’ defense has had 30 tackles for loss.

The Hoosiers are ranked 84th in red zone offense through their first three games. On the defensive end, Indiana ranks 13th in points allowed per game. They are 14th against the run and 14th against the pass. The Hoosiers are ranked sixth in red zone defense. They are 11th in the country in penalties per game and fifth in time of possession. The Hoosiers are also top ten in turnover margin, ranked 7th in the nation.
Key Injuries: RB Lee Beebe Jr. is out.
Illinois at Indiana Pick
Point Spread pick for Indiana
- Indiana -5.5 (4 units)
The Hoosiers have had Illinois’ number in recent years, winning four of the past five meetings. They have the advantage of playing at home in this one and have the ground game to control the tempo of the game. Indiana ranks 7th in the country in rushing thus far and, as a result, ranks fifth in the nation in time of possession. That will prove critical in a game featuring two teams ranked in the top ten in turnover margin. Illinois has yet to turn the ball over this season, and the Hoosiers rank 7th. The Hoosiers are also ranked 7th in red zone defense. In a game featuring two teams capable of putting up big offensive numbers, Indiana’s ability to limit red zone drives to field goals could be all the difference they need in this game. I’ll ride the recent trend and take the Hoosiers to keep on rolling in their Big Ten opener against the Fighting Illini.
Take Indiana -5.5
Over/Under Pick for Illinois vs. Indiana
- Over 52.5 (4 units)
These two teams are tied for 14th in the nation in points per game. While both defenses have shone early on, they have benefitted from a fairly tame non-conference schedule. Indiana can score effectively both on the ground and through the air. They’ll attack the Fighting Illini’s defense on the ground first to open up the pass game. Illinois has shown the ability to generate points in bunches, as evidenced by its 28 points in the second half against Western Michigan. I think they’ll be playing from behind in this one, and that should result in some late scores to help this one over the total.
