James Madison: Defense sets tone
The Dukesβ lone loss came at Louisville, but they have posted convincing wins over Liberty and Georgia Southern since. James Madison is also 4-0 ATS this season, with five straight covers dating to last yearβs bowl game. The Dukes dominated the Eagles last week, rushing for 331 yards and possessing the ball for nearly 36 minutes.

The James Madison defense ranks No. 3 nationally in total yards allowed (209.3 per game) and No. 4 against the pass (118.8). Linebacker Trent Hendrick leads the team with 30 tackles through four games.
On offense, the Dukes are just 119th in passing yards, but 59th in total yards. Quarterback Alonza Barnett III has thrown for 593 yards and four touchdowns against one interception. He manages the game well and has not thrown more than 25 passes in any game this season as the running attack leads the offense. The rushing attack is ranked No. 11 nationally at 249.3 yards per game. Leading the charge are running backs Wayne Knight, who has totaled 341 rushing yards, and Jordan Fuller with 168 rushing yards. Both are averaging more than seven yards per carry.
Georgia State: Struggles continue
The Panthers are just 1-3, and their defense has been one of the worst in the FBS statistically. They rank last nationally in both total defense (503.3 yards allowed per game) and scoring defense (48.0 points per game). As bad as the stats look, the Panthers have challenged themselves, losing to Ole Miss 63-7, Memphis 38-16, and Vanderbilt 70-21. Georgia State's lone victory was 37-21 against FCS Murray State.
Offensively, quarterback TJ Finley has passed for 527 yards and three touchdowns with three interceptions.Β Finley is a well-traveled quarterback, who has had stops at LSU, Auburn, Texas State, and Western Kentucky before landing in Atlanta. Wide receiver Ted Hurst has been the top playmaker with 346 receiving yards. Georgia Stateβs lack of a rushing attack continues to hold it back, averaging just 109.5 yards per game. Their biggest challenge defensively in this matchup will be against the run, and they are allowing 227.3 rushing yards per game (132nd).
James Madison Dukes at Georgia State Panthers Predictions
Spread Pick for JMU vs. Georgia State
- James Madison -19.5 (4 units)
Georgia State is coming off a 70-21 loss to Vanderbilt and has been blown out by James Madison in each of the last two seasons. As uncomfortable as it is to lay this many points on the road, I canβt take the Panthers with confidence. James Madison loves to run the ball, and last week, Georgia State gave up 286 rushing yards and eight rushing touchdowns to Vanderbilt. With a number this large, the backdoor cover potential is there, but I have to take the Dukes to stay undefeated against the spread.
Total Prediction for JMU vs. Georgia State
- Over 53.5 (5 units)
Georgia State has combined for at least 54 points in all four games this season, and has allowed at least 38 points in all three games against FBS opponents. James Madison may not be Ole Miss or Vanderbilt, but they have one of the deepest rushing attacks in the country, and have scored at least 31 points in three of their four contest. The Dukes have also been able to hang at least 38 points on the Panthers in each of the last three seasons.
The question of whether or not this game goes over will depend on Georgia Stateβs ability to score. Backup quarterback Cameran Brown has shown some promise for the Panthers this season with five touchdowns and no picks, and I can see him leading the way on some late drives when Finley struggles. I will back the over.
