Kansas Trying to Earn Road Conference Win

Kansas rebounded from a narrow loss to Cincinnati as they dropped UCF on the road last week in their previous contest. The Jayhawks improved to 4-2 overall and stand 2-1 in Big 12 play on the year heading into this contest. Against UCF, Kansas trailed 14-0 in the opening seconds of the second quarter and 20-14 at the half before rallying. The Jayhawks held the Knights scoreless in the second half and took the lead for good on Leshon Williams’ two-yard TD run with three minutes to play in the third quarter en route to the win. Kansas was edged 375-356 in total offense, gave up 21 first downs while recording 15 and forced the game’s only turnover while holding a razor-thin 30:01 to 29:59 margin in time of possession. That takeaway set up the winning score.

On the season, the Jayhawks are 42nd in the nation in passing offense with 261.8 yards per contest through the air, while they are 54th in rushing offense with 173 yards per game on the ground. Kansas stands 39th in the FBS in scoring offense with an average of 35 points per game, while they are 44th in scoring defense by allowing 20.5 points per contest. Jalon Daniels is 103 of 153 passing for 1,497 yards with 16 touchdowns against two interceptions this season. He is second on the team with 239 rushing yards and a score on the year. Cole Ballard is three of eight for 46 yards with a score while adding 69 yards on the ground. Isaiah Marshall (three of three, 28 yards, 69 rush yards) has also seen action. Leshon Williams is the team’s lead back as he has run the ball 50 times for 303 yards and five scores. Daniel Hishaw Jr. (35 carries, 178 yards, TD) is a capable option in the run game as well. Emmanuel Henderson Jr. leads the team with 28 receptions for 488 yards and four scores on the year. Boden Groen (12 catches, 234 yards, two TD), Cam Pickett (18 receptions, 227 yards, three TD), Levi Wentz (10 grabs, 162 yards, two TD) and DeShawn Hanika (10 catches, 97 yards, three TD) all have double-digit receptions this season. Laith Marjan has hit 24 of 24 extra point attempts and nine of nine field goal attempts with a long of 47 this season. Dane Efird is one of one on extra point attempts but has not attempted a field goal this year.

Hanika (leg) is done for the season. Hishaw Jr. was injured against West Virginia on September 20 and missed the last two games. Watch for updates on his status for this contest.

Red Raiders Seeking 6-0 Start

Texas Tech came off its bye with a vengeance as it took care of business against Houston on the road last week to remain unbeaten. The Red Raiders improved to 5-0 overall and stand 2-0 in Big 12 play, leaving them tied with BYU for the top spot. Against Houston, Texas Tech jumped in front 15-0 just over 10 minutes into the game and cruised from there. The Red Raiders led 25-11 at the half and didn’t let the Cougars closer than that the rest of the way. Texas Tech rolled up a 552-267 edge in total offense, picked up 27 first downs while allowing 12, forced three turnovers while committing one and dominated time of possession by a 37:58 to 22:02 margin in the contest.

The Red Raiders enter this contest 1st in the nation in passing offense with an average of 363.8 yards per game, while they are 30th in rushing offense by grinding out 205 yards per game on the ground. Texas Tech is 2nd in the FBS in scoring offense by averaging 48.6 points per contest, while they are 4th in scoring defense by allowing 11.2 points per game. Behren Morton has completed 97 of 140 passes for 1,410 yards with 12 touchdowns against three interceptions on the year. Will Hammond (31 of 41, 369 yards, four TD, INT, 170 rush yards, two TD) and Mitch Griffis (four of five, 40 yards, TD, 21 rushing yards) are next up on the depth chart. Cameron Dickey leads the team on the ground with 71 carries for 330 yards and six scores this season. Adam Hill (24 carries, 207 yards) and J’Koby Williams (58 carries, 308 yards, four TD) are secondary backs in the system. Terrance Carter Jr. is third on the team in the passing game with 20 receptions for 269 yards and four touchdowns. Caleb Douglas (18 grabs, 340 yards, TD) and Coy Eakin (24 catches, 341 yards, three TD), Williams (15 catches, 227 yards, TD) and Reggie Virgil (21 receptions, 252 yards, four TD) are also over 200 receiving yards this season. Stone Harrington is 15 of 15 on extra point attempts and seven of nine on field goal attempts with a long of 58 this year. Upton Bellenfant is 10 of 11 on extra points and five of five on field goals with a long of 33. Ian Hershey is two of two on extra points and has not attempted a field goal this season.

Kansas vs. Texas Tech Pick

Spread Pick for Kansas vs. Texas Tech

  • Texas Tech -13.5 (4 units)

Kansas has played well this season as Daniels has stayed healthy to this point of the year. Losing Hanika is a blow, and the hope is that Hishaw Jr. can return to action here to bolster the run game. Texas Tech has mauled the opposition this season, and they are the lone team in the FBS to have won each of their games by at least 20 points this season. Texas Tech has been dominant on both sides of the ball, ranking first in the FBS in passing offense, second in scoring offense and fourth in scoring defense this season. The Red Raiders have recorded a dozen takeaways and they take advantage of playing at home here to wear down the Jayhawks for the win.

Over/Under Pick for Kansas vs. Texas Tech

  • Under 60.5 (4 units)

While we have a pair of explosive offensive teams here, the fact remains that both sides are capable defensively as well. Kansas has seen the under post a 4-2 mark in their six games this season. The Jayhawks have split their two road games, going over the number in the loss to Missouri while staying under the mark in last week’s win over UCF. Texas Tech has stayed under the number in three of their five games in relation to the total, even though they are second in the nation in scoring offense. The Red Raiders have allowed 14 points or fewer in each game this season. While Kansas could be the first team to break that mark this season, this game winds up short of the number as the Red Raiders’ defense makes plays.
