Kennesaw State Looking to Build Off Near Miss

Kennesaw State pushed Wake Forest to the limit in their season opener on the road only to fall just short in Jeremy Mack’s debut with the program. The Owls look to build off a near upset and carry that momentum with them as they travel to face a ranked Indiana squad. Against Wake Forest, Kennesaw State trailed 7-6 after the opening quarter and at the half. The Owls took a 9-7 lead in the third quarter but couldn’t maintain the edge. Their last four drives amassed a total of seven yards of offense. Kennesaw State was outgained 348-307 in total offense, lost the first down battle 20-18 and was crushed 35:01 to 24:59 in time of possession. Neither team committed a turnover in the contest.

Dexter Williams II, in his debut with Kennesaw State, completed 12 of 33 passes for 149 yards. He added 44 yards on 14 carries to finish as the team’s second-leading rusher. Coleman Bennett led the team on the ground with 17 carries for 69 yards plus a score. Alexander Diggs chipped in 39 yards on 11 carries as the Owls ran the ball 43 times for 158 yards in the game. Gabriel Benyard reeled in five passes for 103 yards in the game as one of just two players with multiple receptions. Lyndon Ravare (two catches, 12 yards) was the only other player with more than one grab. Britton Williams missed his lone extra point attempt and his lone field goal attempt, which came from 36 yards, in the game. Daniel Kinney didn’t attempt an extra point and connected on his lone field goal attempt, which came from 29 yards, in the loss.

Hoosiers Seeking Better Showing After Sluggish Opener

Indiana sputtered early before getting a boost on a special teams play that seemed to wake them up in the final seconds of the first quarter. The Hoosiers gave up a touchdown on the first play from scrimmage before reeling off 27 unanswered points to take a 27-7 advantage after three quarters. Indiana didn’t let Old Dominion closer than 13 as they went on to the win. The Hoosiers rolled up a 502-316 edge in total offense, piled up a 30-10 advantage in first downs, dominated time of possession by a 41:28 to 18:32 margin and forced three turnovers while committing one.

Fernando Mendoza, the Cal transfer, was 18 of 31 passing in his Indiana debut for 193 yards in the game. He had no touchdowns or interceptions through the air, though he did add six carries for 33 yards and a score on the ground. Indiana battered Old Dominion with the run game as they piled up 309 yards on 57 carries with three backs having effective games. Roman Hemby led the way with 23 carries for 111 yards on the ground. Kaelon Black (17 carries, 92 yards, TD) and Lee Beebe Jr. (11 carries, 73 yards) were solid in their work running the ball as well. E.J. Williams led the team with five receptions for 45 yards in the game. Elijah Surratt (three catches, 44 yards), Omar Cooper Jr. (two grabs, 52 yards), Riley Nowakowski (two receptions, 15 yards) and Jonathan Brady (two catches, eight yards) also caught multiple balls in the game. Brady scored on a 91-yard punt return in the contest. Nico Radicic hit all three extra point attempts and two of three field goal attempts. He connected on kicks from 22 and 25 yards while missing from 52.

Spread Pick for Kennesaw State vs. Indiana

  • Kennesaw State Owls +35.5 (4 units)

Don’t get me wrong, Indiana should win this game in one-sided fashion, but giving five-plus touchdowns is a tough ask. The Hoosiers could be content to pound the ball and bleed the clock as they did against Old Dominion last week. Kennesaw State pushed Wake Forest to the limit on the road last week and could have won the game with a better showing in the kicking game. Now, Indiana is clearly a better program than Wake Forest at this point but they only put up 27 points in the win over Old Dominion. Straight up, Indiana gets the call all day long but with the line factored in, take the Owls here.

Over/Under Pick for Kennesaw State vs. Indiana

  • Under 52.5 (4 units)

Both teams fell well short of the total in their season-opening contests. Kennesaw State was limited to single digits on the scoreboard in their loss to Wake Forest. The Owls and Demon Deacons combined for a measly 19 points against several 51 points set by the books. Indiana combined with Old Dominion to total 41 points in their season opener at home. That fell a dozen points shy of the 53-point number set by the books for that contest. It’s hard to see Kennesaw State doing much offensively here and if Indiana feasts on the run game as they did against Old Dominion, they won’t put up the 40-plus points it would take to put this over the mark. Take the under here as a result.
