Use Code WWWC The Toledo Rockets (3-3, 1-2 MAC) will host the Kent State Golden Flashes (1-4, 0-2 MAC) on Saturday at the Glass Bowl. Toledo holds a 28-21 edge in the all-time series and has dominated the matchup since 1988, winning 13 of the last 15 meetings, including six straight. The teams last met in 2022, when Toledo rolled to a 52-31 victory.

Kent State is off a rare win
After going 1-23 over the last two seasons under former head coach Kenni Burns, Kent State is now in the first year of the Mark Carney era—and progress is beginning to show. The Golden Flashes earned their second win of the season last Saturday with a dominant 42-6 victory over UMass.
Kent State has endured one of the toughest schedules in the nation, suffering three blowout losses to Texas Tech, Florida State and Oklahoma. The Flashes also dropped a 31-28 conference game to Buffalo but earned a 21-17 win over Merrimack earlier this season.

Quarterback Dru DeShields has thrown for 790 yards and nine touchdowns this season. In the win over UMass, he completed 10 of 18 passes for 148 yards with four touchdowns and no interceptions. Despite that breakout performance, Kent State’s offense still ranks 132nd nationally in total offense (271.2 yards per game) and 117th in scoring (19.2 points per game). Running back Gavin Garcia leads the team with 254 rushing yards, averaging 3.4 yards per carry, but he has yet to score a touchdown.
Defensively, the win over UMass was a bright spot, but the overall numbers remain poor. Kent State allows 465.5 yards per game (133rd nationally) and 37.7 points per game (132nd). Against UMass, however, the Flashes outgained the Minutemen 330-271 in total yards and forced two turnovers while committing none.
Toledo coming off a stunning loss to their rival
The Toledo Rockets entered the 2025 season as heavy favorites to win the Mid-American Conference, but early disappointments have tempered those expectations. The non-conference slate went mostly according to plan. Toledo opened the year with a competitive 24-16 loss at Kentucky, covering the spread in a tough SEC environment, before rolling past Western Kentucky 45-21 and Morgan State 60-0.
However, once conference play began, the Rockets stumbled. Toledo opened MAC play with a 14-13 road loss to Western Michigan before rebounding with a 45-3 rout of Akron at the Glass Bowl. Last week, the Rockets faced archrival Bowling Green and jumped out to a 21-0 second-quarter lead, only to collapse in a 28-23 loss.
Toledo has been dominant at home this season, going 3-0 straight up and against the spread at the Glass Bowl, but they are 0-3 straight up and 1-2 ATS on the road.
Quarterback Tucker Gleason has completed 62.8% of his passes for 1,189 yards with eight touchdowns and four interceptions. This is Gleason's fifth straight season seeing action for Toledo, but he ranks just 103rd nationally in QBR.
Running back Chip Trayanum leads the ground attack with 601 rushing yards, averaging 5.8 yards per carry. The Rockets’ offense ranks 34th nationally with 441.3 yards per game and 46th in scoring at 33.7 points per game. Defensively, Toledo has been elite, ranking 13th in scoring defense (15.0 points per game) and third in total defense (226 yards per game).
Even in last week’s loss to Bowling Green, Toledo dominated statistically, outgaining the Falcons 429-226 in total yards. But 13 penalties and a costly Gleason fumble on a sack at Toledo’s own 1-yard line with just over six minutes left proved too much to overcome.
Head coach Jason Candle is now 76-43 overall since taking over in 2016, but he has lost outright 12 times as a double-digit favorite, including twice this season, including three losses in his last four games against Bowling Green, trends that have Rockets fans frustrated.
Kent State Golden Flashes vs Toledo Rockets Predictions
Spread Pick for Kent State vs Toledo
- Toledo -26 ( 4 units)
When you look at how these two teams match up, Toledo should dominate from start to finish. The Rockets have a clear talent edge on both sides of the ball, and Kent State will struggle put together drives, unless Toledo beats itself. The biggest concern for Toledo is how the team responds after last week’s collapse against Bowling Green.
That said, the Rockets have done an excellent job in bouncing back from losses this season and have handled inferior competition well at home. Kent State’s recent win over UMass, which should have gotten Toledo's attention, and after blowing a 21-0 lead last week, I expect the Rockets to come out locked in. I’ll lay the points with Toledo to roll.
Total Pick for Kent State vs. Toledo
- Over 52 (4 units)
Toledo should put up at least 40-plus points on its own. While Kent State’s offense is overmatched by Toledo’s defense, the Flashes rank a respectable 39th nationally in plays of 60+ yards and have explosiveness in the return game. Da’Realyst Clark leads the nation with two kickoff return touchdowns, giving Kent strong chances to contribute to the scoring through special teams.
I’ll take the Over 52, with Toledo cruising to a 45-17 victory.
