Kent State Grabs Big Win Over Bowling Green

Kent State comes into this midweek MACtion matchup with a little bit of momentum after rallying to beat Bowling Green 24-21 in dramatic fashion. The Golden Flashes trailed 21-3 midway through the third quarter before storming back with 21 unanswered points, capped by a trick-play touchdown pass from wideout Da’Realyst Clark to Wayne Harris. That kind of comeback can do wonders for a team’s confidence, especially one that has struggled to find consistency all season. Quarterback Dru DeShields has been steady if unspectacular, throwing for over 1,100 yards with 11 touchdowns against just two interceptions, and his ability to protect the football has kept Kent State in games even when the offense sputters.

The Golden Flashes’ biggest issue has been balance. They rank near the bottom of the FBS in rushing offense, averaging under 90 yards per game, which has put a lot of pressure on DeShields and the passing attack. Running back Gavin Garcia has shown flashes, including a 45-yard touchdown burst against Bowling Green, but the offensive line has struggled to open consistent lanes. Wideout Cade Wolford has been the go-to target, hauling in six touchdowns and stretching defenses with his ability to get downfield. If Kent State can get Garcia going early and keep Ball State’s defense honest, it will open up opportunities for Wolford and the passing game to make plays.

Defensively, Kent State has been one of the most vulnerable units in the MAC, giving up over 36 points per game and allowing opponents to move the ball both on the ground and through the air. They’ve been gashed for more than 200 rushing yards per contest, which is a dangerous trend against a Ball State team that likes to lean on its ground game. Still, the Flashes showed some fight against Bowling Green, recording three sacks and seven tackles for loss in the comeback win. If they can bring that same energy and force Ball State into long-yardage situations, they’ll give themselves a chance to steal another one on the road.

Offense Struggles In Loss To  Northern Illinois

Ball State returns home after a frustrating 21-7 loss at Northern Illinois, a game where the offense never found its rhythm. Quarterback Kiael Kelly threw for 136 yards with a touchdown but also tossed two costly interceptions, and while he added 86 yards on the ground, the Cardinals couldn’t sustain drives in the second half. That loss dropped them to 3-5 overall, but the good news is they’ve been a different team at Scheumann Stadium. Ball State is unbeaten at home this season, averaging 32 points per game in Muncie, and they’ll be eager to get back on track in front of their own fans.

The Cardinals’ offense is built around a run-first approach, with Kelly and running back Qua Ashley combining for over 900 rushing yards and eight touchdowns on the season. When the ground game is working, it opens up opportunities for Kelly to take shots downfield, though the passing attack has been one of the least productive in the FBS at just 130 yards per game. Wideout Qian Magwood has been the most reliable target, but Ball State’s best chance to control this game will be pounding the ball against a Kent State defense that has struggled mightily against the run. If Ashley and Kelly can establish themselves early, the Cardinals should be able to dictate tempo.

Defensively, Ball State has been inconsistent, but they’ve shown flashes of playmaking ability, forcing seven turnovers over their last three games. Defensive end Nathan Voorhis has been a standout, racking up 10 sacks to lead the MAC and ranking among the national leaders. His ability to pressure DeShields could be a game-changer, especially if Kent State is forced into obvious passing downs. The Cardinals have also been much more disciplined at home, cutting down on penalties and playing with more energy. If they can bottle up Garcia and keep Wolford from breaking loose, Ball State’s defense should be able to complement their run-heavy offense and give them a strong chance to extend their home winning streak.

Kent State vs Ball State Pick

Kent State vs Ball State Spread Pick

  • Kent State +1.5 (1 Unit)

Taking Kent State +1.5 has some appeal because the Golden Flashes showed real resilience in their comeback win over Bowling Green, and that kind of momentum can carry into a short-week MACtion spot. Dru DeShields has done a good job protecting the football, and with Cade Wolford emerging as a reliable downfield threat, Kent State has just enough balance to keep defenses honest. If Gavin Garcia can chip in with a few chunk runs to complement the passing game, the Flashes should be able to sustain drives and hang around against a Ball State defense that has been inconsistent at best.On the other side, Ball State’s run-heavy approach plays right into Kent State’s opportunity to load the box and force Kiael Kelly to beat them through the air, something he hasn’t done consistently. The Cardinals have struggled when they fall behind, and Kent State’s ability to generate pressure up front could create those long-yardage situations that stall drives. With the Flashes riding the confidence of last week’s rally and Ball State still searching for rhythm offensively, grabbing the points with Kent State looks like a solid way to back the team that’s playing looser and with more belief right now.

Kent State vs Ball State Over/Under Pick

  • Under 46.5 (2 Units)

The under 46.5 makes sense here because both Kent State and Ball State have leaned on conservative, run-heavy approaches that chew clock but don’t always translate into points. The Golden Flashes have struggled to establish a consistent rushing attack, while the Cardinals’ passing game has been among the least productive in the MAC. Add in two defenses that, while flawed, have shown the ability to create negative plays and force stalled drives, and this matchup projects more like a grind-it-out battle than a shootout, keeping the total under the number.
