Louisiana Hoping to Regroup on the Road

Louisiana couldn’t build off their win over McNeese as they were hammered into oblivion by #25 Missouri on the road last week. The Ragin’ Cajuns dropped to 1-2 on the season and hope to even their record before starting conference play next week. Against Missouri, Louisiana trailed 14-0 after the opening quarter and by a 28-0 mark less than five minutes into the second quarter and never recovered. The Ragin’ Cajuns were down 38-10 at the half and didn’t score the rest of the way. Louisiana was destroyed 606-121 in total offense, trampled 32-4 in first downs and obliterated 42:09 to 17:51 in time of possession. Those numbers massively overshadowed that the Ragin’ Cajuns forced the game’s lone turnover.

On the season, Louisiana is 136th, or dead last, in the FBS in passing offense with an average of 59.3 yards per game, while they are 42nd in rushing with 194.3 yards per contest to date. The Ragin’ Cajuns stand 116th in scoring offense as they put up an average of 18.7 points per game, while they are 89th in scoring defense by allowing 25.3 points per contest this year. Daniel Beale is 15 of 36 passing for 91 yards and a score plus four rushing yards on the season. Walker Howard (10 of 22, 88 yards, INT, 47 rush yards, TD) and Lunch Winfield (one of six, -1 yard, 15 rush yards) have also seen action under center. Zylan Perry leads the run game with 30 carries for 226 yards and a score. Bill Davis (36 carries, 191 yards, two TD) and Steven Blanco (13 carries, 100 yards, TD) have shared the load in the run game. In the passing attack, Sheldon Sampson (63 yards) and tight end Caden Jensen (18 yards) share the team lead with five receptions. KeDarius Wade (two catches, 25 yards) and Robert Williams (two grabs, 18 yards are the only other players with more than 15 receiving yards on the year. Tony Sterner is five of five on extra point attempts and five of seven on field goal attempts with a long of 51 this season.

Eagles Looking to Soar to Victory

Eastern Michigan saw their early-season struggles, especially on defense, continue as they were drubbed on the road by Kentucky last week. The Eagles fell to 0-3 on the year, including a loss to LIU at home, and hope to pick up a win at home here. Against Kentucky, Eastern Michigan trailed 7-0 just 49 seconds into the game and that set the tone for the contest. The Eagles were down 14-3 after the opening quarter and got within 28-16 at the half. They couldn’t get any closer the rest of the way en route to the loss. Eastern Michigan was outgained 492-461 in total offense, gave up 24 first downs while picking up 21 and committed the game’s lone turnover. The Eagles did hold a 30:04 to 29:56 margin in time of possession but defensive issues plagued them again.

For the year, the Eagles are 48th in the nation in passing offense as they average 255.7 yards per game through the air and tied for 99th in rushing offense by picking up 132 yards per contest on the ground. Eastern Michigan is 89th in the FBS in scoring offense as they put up an average of 24.3 points per game, while they are 135th in scoring defense by allowing 42.7 points per contest. Noah Kim is 66 of 105 passing for 767 yards with four touchdowns and one interception while adding 43 yards and a score on the ground. Dontae McMillan leads the team on the ground with 30 carries for 219 yards and a score this season. Tavierre Dunlap (26 carries, 74 yards, TD) and Joey Mattord (five carries, 38 yards, TD) are also in the mix. Terry Lockett Jr. leads the team with 16 receptions for 230 yards and a score this season. Joshua Long (nine catches, 108 yards, TD), McMillan (seven grabs, 90 yards, TD), Ben Prosper (seven catches, 74 yards), Tanner LeMaster (five catches, 69 yards), Nick Deveraux (five grabs, 57 yards) and Jamarien Wheeler (six receptions, 49 yards, TD) are other valuable options. Rudy Kessinger is seven of seven on extra point attempts and six of seven field goal attempts with a long of 50 on the year.

Moneyline Pick for Louisiana vs. Eastern Michigan

  • Eastern Michigan +115 (4 units)

Neither team has looked good this season, with the lone win put up by either squad coming over an FCS program. Louisiana is dead last in the FBS in passing offense and ranks in the bottom 20 in scoring offense on the year. Eastern Michigan has struggled against the run, giving up 291.7 yards per game, 6.7 yards per carry, and 11 scores on the ground this season. Seeing how the Ragin’ Cajuns played in their first road game of the season, it’s tough to lean on them, especially giving points. Louisiana’s defense hasn’t set the world on fire in the first month of the season, so Eastern Michigan, playing at home, takes advantage of the situation here and picks up a win in a close game.

Over/Under Pick for Louisiana vs. Eastern Michigan

  • Over 49.5 (4 units)

We’re looking at a pair of teams that are mediocre on the defensive side of the field. Louisiana is giving up 365 yards of total offense and 25.3 points per game this season. The Ragin’ Cajuns stayed under the number in two of their three games, though they did go over the mark in the road loss to Missouri. Eastern Michigan is second-last in the FBS in scoring defense, which has helped the over hit in two of their three games on the year. Even in their loss to LIU, the teams combined for 51 points, which is higher than the number for this contest. Look for both teams to score at least 24 points and potentially threaten the 30-point barrier, pushing this over the number.
