Louisiana Tech Seeking Third Straight Win

Louisiana Tech won their second straight game as they took down Southern Miss at home last week and look to maintain momentum. The Bulldogs improved to 3-1 overall and stand 1-0 in Conference USA action on the year. Against Southern Miss, Louisiana Tech did all their damage in the first half, taking a 30-10 lead at intermission and holding off the Golden Eagles the rest of the way to earn the win. The Bulldogs overcame losing total offense by a 514-340 margin, allowing 28 first downs while picking up 14 and lost the time of possession by a 32:36 to 27:24 margin. Louisiana Tech did force the gameโ€™s only turnover, a pick-six, to help build that first-half advantage.

For the season, the Bulldogs are 117th in the nation in passing offense with an average of 170.5 yards per contest, while they are tied for 68th in the nation in rushing offense with 162 yards per game. Louisiana Tech is 81st in the FBS in scoring offense with an average of 27.5 points per contest, while they are 23rd in scoring defense by allowing 14.2 points per game. Blake Baker is 26 of 45 passing for 467 yards with two touchdown passes while ranking second on the team with 145 yards and two scores on the ground. Trey Kukuk (27 of 39, 270 yards, two TD, INT, 104 rush yards) has seen action as well. Clay Thevenin leads the run game with 31 carries for 162 yards and two scores. Omiri Wiggins (34 carries, 121 yards, two TD) and Andrew Burnette (24 carries, 84 yards, TD) are also involved in the run game. Eli Finley leads the team with 14 receptions for 232 yards. Devin Gandy (seven receptions, 126 yards, TD) and Marques Singleton (10 catches, 66 yards) are the only other players with more than four catches. Drew Henderson is 12 of 13 on extra point attempts and three of four on field goals with a long of 27. John Hoyet Chance has not attempted an extra point and hit his lone field goal attempt, which came from 55 yards, on the year.

Kukuk (undisclosed) was injured against New Mexico State on September 13 and is questionable here.

Miners Hoping to Pick Up Home Win

UTEP struggled at home last week as they were unable to make the plays in crunch time on both sides of the ball against UL Monroe last week. The Miners fell to 1-3 overall on the season and open up conference play here, hoping to get on track. Against UL Monroe, UTEP started slow and dug too deep a hole to climb out of, sending them to defeat. The Miners trailed 24-7 at the half and 31-7 midway through the third quarter. They rallied to within six with six minutes to play but couldnโ€™t score again. UTEP held a 442-398 edge in total offense, picked up 21 first downs while allowing 18 and lost time of possession by a 31:51 to 28:09 margin. The Miners were hurt by committing the gameโ€™s two turnovers.

The Miners come into this contest 36th in the FBS in passing offense with 269.3 yards per game through the air and 125th in rushing offense with 95 yards per game. UTEP is only 97th in scoring offense with an average of 23.3 points per contest and 83rd in scoring defense as they allow an average of 25.8 points per game. Malachi Nelson is 82 of 142 passing for 1,069 yards with eight touchdowns and five interceptions on the year. Shay Smith (two of six, eight yards, 16 rush yards, TD) and Skyler Locklear (one of three, zero yards, 37 rush yards) have seen limited action. Hahsaun Wilson leads the run game with 24 carries for 177 yards and a score this season. Ashten Emory (33 carries, 91 yards, two TD) and Kam Thomas (16 carries, 36 yards) are also in the mix. Kenny Odom leads the Miners with 19 catches for 236 yards and two touchdowns. Trevon Tate (15 catches, 200 yards, TD), Toric Goins Jr. (11 catches, 192 yards, TD), Wondame Davis Jr. (six grabs, 119 yards, two TD) and Eric Willis III (11 receptions, 105 yards) are all over the century mark in receiving yards on the year. Carlos Arreola is eight of eight on extra point attempts and three of five on field goal attempts with a long of 42 this season.

Odom (shoulder) missed last weekโ€™s game and is questionable for this contest.

Louisiana Tech vs. UTEP Prediction

Spread Pick for Louisiana Tech vs. UTEP

  • Louisiana Tech -3.5 (4 units)

Louisiana Tech is struggling to do a ton of damage offensively but they have had success when it comes to holding opposing teams in check. The Bulldogs have given up 264.3 yards per game through the air, though they have allowed only five passing scores on the year. Louisiana Tech held LSU to only 23 points in their lone loss of the season, and the defense has forced eight turnovers already. That plays in their favor as Nelson has thrown five picks already this season. UTEP is below average on both sides of the ball and stands -4 in the takeaway/giveaway ratio while the Bulldogs are +7 in that department. Look for Louisiana Tech to take care of business here to pick up the road win.

Over/Under Pick for Louisiana Tech vs. UTEP

  • Under 48.5 (4 units)

Louisiana Tech is in the top 25 of the FBS in scoring defense this season. The Bulldogs have given up 20 points or less in three of their four games, while LSU was the high-water mark, scoring 23 against them. Louisiana Tech has stayed under the number in three of their four games and they scored 49 points in their lone over this year. UTEP is below average on both sides of the ball, having scored 16 points or less in two of its four games on this year. The Minersโ€™ big offensive showing was a 42-point outburst against a FCS school in UT Martin. UTEP struggles to put points on the board here, keeping this game under the number.
