Louisiana Tech blanks FCS in-state foe
Louisiana Tech enters Week 2 with a 1-0 record. The Bulldogs were able to blank their FCS opponent at home for an easy first week victory. There are some expectations for Louisiana Tech this season in Conference USA. They were picked No. 4 in the preseason media poll as they will look to challenge for the top of the league.
Last week, Louisiana Tech defeated FCS Southeast Louisiana 24-0 at home on Saturday, Aug. 30. The Bulldogs accumulated 262 total yards while the Lions accumulated 273 yards. The Bulldogs’ defense forced three turnovers which helped them secure the win. Louisiana Tech led 3-0 at halftime. They were able to secure the win thanks to 21 points in the third quarter.
Quarterback Trey Kukuk led the team with 130 yards on 14-for-19 passing. He threw a passing touchdown and he added 48 yards on the ground. Clay Thevenin led the team receiving with 61 yards and one touchdown.
"First games, now more than ever, there is so much unknown," Louisiana Tech head coach Sonny Cumbie said after the win. "You think you know what guys are going to do but some of them you've played with and some of them haven't played in a game before. Lot of moving parts from a coaching staff standpoint. You don't know what you got sometimes. Until you get out under the lights and see live bullets, I think that's when you start seeing growth from one game to the next.”
Louisiana Tech was a 14.5 point favorite against SE Louisiana last week. The 24 point win allowed the Bulldogs to cover the spread. The total was set at 51.5 and thanks to strong defensive play the under hit.
LSU goes on the road for big win vs Clemson
LSU comes into Week 2 with a swagger. They went on the road and earned a big win over a Clemson team that many pundits saw as a National Title contender, which they still could be. After Week 1, LSU was the big winner and will have some major confidence coming into this game against Louisiana Tech. LSU is now the No. 3-ranked team in the nation.
Against Clemson, LSU was able to come away with a 17-10 win. Clemson was able to go ahead early by a field goal before LSU tied the game at 3-3 in the second quarter. Just before halftime, Clemson stole the momentum to take a 10-3 lead into the break.
But, LSU did not fall apart; they responded well with two touchdowns in the second half. LSU’s defense forced a missed field goal and secured an interception while stopping Clemson on fourth down twice in the second half. It was a great defensive performance from LSU.
Quarterback Garrett Nussmeier threw for 232 yards on 28-for-38 passing. He secured one touchdown while running back Caden Durham scored the other touchdown. Durham also rushed for 74 yards in the win. Wide receiver Aaron Anderson had a big game with six catches for 99 yards, too.
“It's a good question because we didn't do that against Nicholls State last year. We've talked about that. There's a standard of playing football here at LSU, and that's the standard that we're gonna have to play when we go on that field. Every Saturday, there's a standard, and our guys know what the standard is. We're gonna be demanding, not demeaning, but we're gonna be demanding. Today's gonna be a demanding practice, and they're gonna have to live up to those standards,” LSU head coach Brian Kelly said this week.
LSU did cover the spread in their only game so far this season. They were 5.5-point underdogs to Clemson last week and with the win, they were able to cover. The under hit in last week’s low scoring game. The LSU vs Clemson game total was set at 55.5 points and with both offenses struggling to find consistency, the under was able to cash.
Louisiana Tech vs. LSU Pick
Spread Pick for Louisiana Tech vs. LSU
- LSU Tigers -37.5 (5 units)
I believe Louisiana Tech is going to compete this season in Conference USA. They will get better as the season rolls along. Do I think they will have a chance against the No. 3 team in the nation? Absolutely not. The Bulldogs struggled in the first half against Southeast Louisiana last week. The Tigers can jump out early and put the pedal down on offense; they can win this game by the second quarter. I think they will as their offense went up against an elite defense last week. The Bulldogs allowed more yards to SE Louisiana than their own offense produced. This should be a big win for the Tigers.
Take LSU to cover
Over/Under Pick for Louisiana Tech vs. LSU
Over 51.5 (5 units)
LSU’s passing offense will find its groove in this game. Garrett Nussmeier is a top quarterback in the nation and he should shred a defense that allowed over 270 yards of offense against a FCS opponent last week. The Tigers' defense will dominate, but once the backup players enter the fold, Louisiana Tech does have some weapons to score more than 14 points. This should be a high scoring game in a blowout contest.
Take the over on Saturday.
