Key Matchups for Maryland vs. Illinois
Terps going through a rough stretch
Maryland has a young team with a true freshman quarterback in Malik Washington and a coach in Mike Locksley, who could be on the hot seat. His team opened up at 4-0 with a pretty soft schedule, and then when the going got tough, the Terps have not responded. It began with close losses to Washington, Nebraska, and UCLA (by a combined 10 points), which were all winnable games. They were pounded by Indiana 55-10 on Nov. 1 and then last week, were crushed by lowly Rutgers 35-20.

Washington has hit a wall as a passer, completing just 15 of 28 last week for 98 yards with a TD and a pick. He might have found a groove as a runner (164 yards, 1 TD), which is something that Maryland could use, considering that they've been pretty bad this season, as their leading rushing Dejuan Williams (366 yds) averages just 3.6 yards per carry. Washington is completing 58.4% of his passes for 2,056 yards with 13 TDs and six INTs.
Illini coming off a bye
Illinois, like Maryland, also faced Rutgers in their last game on Nov. 1. Unlike Maryland, they defeated the Scarlet Knights 35-13, which broke a two-game losing streak. QB Luke Altmyer completed 19 of 31 for 235 yards with four TDs and a pick. He also rushed for 88 yards and a TD. The offense rushed for 210 yards and had the ball for 32:35.
Altmyer is completing 70% of his passes for 2,255 yards with 19 TDs and just four INTs. He's also run for three touchdowns on the season. Hank Beatty is his top target with 49 catches for 730 yards and three touchdowns. On defense, OLB Gabe Jacas leads the Illini with 6.5 sacks and two forced fumbles.

Maryland vs. Illinois Final Score Prediction
- Illinois 38-Maryland 20
The big issue here is Maryland's defense and I probably went conservative on the score since Illinois is coming off a bye and should be fresh. The Terps are struggling on the defensive side of the ball, allowing 392.4 yards overall and 226.6 passing yards. Rutgers destroyed them on the ground last week, rushing for 256 yards. That's a bad sign for Saturday against a better offense and overall team.
