Key Matchups for Maryland vs. Michigan State

Terps struggle after strong start

Maryland's early schedule was soft (Towson, FAU, NIU, Wiscy), but they avoided Ohio State and Penn State so the schedule should have meant at least a bowl game for Mike Locksley's young Terps. Instead, they lost close games to Washington (24-20), Nebraska (34-31), and UCLA (20-17). The schedule got a bit tougher; they were annihilated by No. 2 Indiana (55-10) on Nov. 1, and they haven't recovered.

In Maryland's last game, they were beaten badly by a very good Michigan team at home, 45-20. Freshman QB Malik Washington struggled, completing 19 of 39 for 210 yards with a pick and a TD. The Terps got shredded on the ground, allowing 228 yards and four TDs, including three from Bryson Kuzdal.

Washington has 2,504 yards passing with 14 TDs and eight INTs, but is completing just 57% of his passes. He does have 285 rushing yards and four TDs and has been sacked just four times. The Terps' biggest issue, aside from dropped passes (too many), is their running game, which averages just 107 yards per game and 4.1 yards per carry.

Sparty needs a win

The good thing about Michigan State is that they played two close games in their last three in losing at Minnesota (23-20) and at Iowa (20-17) last week. So at least they're getting closer to achieving a win over an FBS team, which hasn't happened since beating Boston College on Sept. 7 and yes, cue the jokes about BC barely being an FBS team since they are 1-10 this season.

The Hawkeyes needed a 44-yard field goal as time expired to beat MSU, which led 17-7 early in the fourth quarter. QB Alessio Milivojevec completed 25 of 42 for 255 yards with two TDs and one pick. The freshman QB is completing 62.7% of his passes for 975 yards with six TDs and two INTs. He replaced Aidan Chiles (1,392 yds, 10 TDs, 3 INTs), who was injured and then benched.

Like Maryland, Michigan State has a poor rushing game (3.7ypc) and they really don't have to make it up with a strong passing game.

Maryland:

  • 1-4 ATS last 5 games.

MSU:

  • 4-1 ATS last 5 games.
  • 4-2 Under last 6
  • 8-2 Under last 10 vs. Maryland

Maryland vs. Michigan State Final Score Prediction

  • Michigan State 26-Maryland 17

Maryland has been awful lately. They haven't been very competitive and at least the Spartans are playing their best football down the stretch. The Terps won't want to be here on a very cold Saturday night. Maryland's lack of a running game will make this a rock fight because it will be tough to throw, not just because it's cold, but rainy and snowy. Those temperatures are not normal for a late November night in College Park. Michigan State needs as much help as possible to get that first conference win. The score will be low partially due to the conditions, but neither team is very explosive offensively.
