UMass Is In For A Long Season

UMass comes in winless and battered after a 47–7 loss to Iowa, where they managed just 212 total yards and turned the ball over twice. Redshirt freshman AJ Hairston is expected to start at quarterback, becoming the third different starter this season. Grant Jordan and Brandon Rose have both struggled, combining for just one touchdown and two interceptions. The Minutemen rank 133rd in scoring offense (14.3 PPG) and have allowed 38.7 points per game—bottom-20 nationally.

The defense has been overwhelmed, giving up over 200 rushing yards per game and struggling to get off the field. Linebacker Timmy Hinspeter leads the team with 24 tackles, but the front seven has failed to generate pressure or contain the edge. Jacquon Gibson is the lone bright spot on offense, averaging 86 receiving yards per game, but without consistent quarterback play, his impact has been limited. UMass has lost five straight dating back to last season and hasn’t beaten an FBS team since October 2023.

Saturday’s trip to Columbia is a mismatch on paper, but new head coach Joe Harasymiak is preaching effort and growth. With nothing to lose and Missouri potentially looking ahead, UMass will try to slow the game down and capitalize on any lapses. If they can avoid turnovers and force a few long drives, they might keep it respectable. But against a Tigers team that controls tempo and punishes mistakes, the margin for error is razor-thin.

Missouri Is Off To A 4-0 Start

Missouri enters Week 5 undefeated and rolling, fresh off a 29–20 win over South Carolina that showcased their offensive depth and defensive control. Quarterback Beau Pribula has been elite, completing 72.4% of his passes for 962 yards and 8 touchdowns while adding 148 rushing yards and 3 scores on the ground. Running back Ahmad Hardy leads the SEC in rushing with 600 yards on 7.6 yards per carry, and Jamal Roberts adds another layer with 298 yards and 2 TDs. The Tigers rank top-10 nationally in total offense and are No. 1 in time of possession, controlling the ball for over 37 minutes per game.

Defensively, Missouri has allowed just 16.8 points per game and ranks top-50 in scoring defense. Linebacker Josiah Trotter leads the team with 24 tackles and 5 TFLs, while Damon Wilson Jr. and Zion Young have combined for 5.5 sacks. The secondary has shown some vulnerability, but the front seven has consistently won at the line of scrimmage. Missouri’s +3 turnover margin and third-down conversion rate (third nationally) make them one of the most efficient teams in the country.

Saturday’s game is a classic letdown spot before a brutal SEC stretch that includes Alabama and four road games in six weeks. Head coach Eli Drinkwitz has emphasized discipline and execution, knowing UMass presents little threat on paper but could capitalize if Missouri loses focus. Expect the Tigers to lean on the run game early, build a lead, and rotate personnel in the second half. If they stay sharp, this could be over by halftime.

Massachusetts Minutemen vs Missouri Tigers Pick

Massachusetts Minutemen vs Missouri Tigers Spread Pick

  • Missouri -44.5 (4 Units)

Missouri -44.5 is justified in a matchup that’s lopsided across every metric. The Tigers rank top-10 nationally in total offense and time of possession, while UMass sits bottom-10 in scoring, rushing defense, and turnover margin. Beau Pribula and Ahmad Hardy form one of the most efficient QB-RB duos in the SEC, and Missouri has covered big numbers before—winning by 30+ in three of four games. UMass, meanwhile, has failed to score more than 14 points in any game and hasn’t beaten an FBS opponent in nearly a year.

With Missouri’s front seven dominating the line of scrimmage and UMass rotating quarterbacks behind a shaky offensive line, this sets up as a blowout early. The Tigers are disciplined, explosive, and deep—three traits that matter when laying a massive number. If Drinkwitz keeps the starters in through three quarters, Missouri could clear this spread without needing help from turnovers or special teams. Even with some late-game rotation, the talent gap is wide enough to trust the cover.

Massachusetts Minutemen vs Missouri Tigers Over/Under Pick

Over 56.5 is well within reach given Missouri’s explosive offense and UMass’s defensive struggles. The Tigers have scored 29+ in every game and rank top-10 nationally in total yards and time of possession, with Beau Pribula and Ahmad Hardy capable of breaking off chunk plays on every drive. UMass has allowed 38.7 points per game and has been gashed on the ground and through the air, making them vulnerable to Missouri’s balanced attack. If Drinkwitz keeps the starters in through three quarters, Missouri should hit 50 on their own, and even minimal resistance from UMass could push this total over.
