Memphis Earns Upset Home Win

The Memphis Tigers are attempting a second straight win on Friday. They have enjoyed a dominant start to the season, winning their first six games. The winning streak was snapped in a 31-24 road loss against UAB two weeks ago. Next, Memphis rebounded with a huge 34-31 home win against a ranked USF squad last week to improve to 3-1 in AAC play. They were 3.5-point dogs in that one. The Tigers have covered the spread in all but one game this season. They are marked #25 in the AP top 25.

Brandon Lewis was outstanding in the win last week, amassing 307 passing yards. The senior quarterback has surpassed 220 passing yards in just three games. Lewis has recorded 1644 passing yards and a 10:4 TD to INT ratio on the season. He has added 475 rushing yards.

The offense prefers to run. Sutton Smith is having a superb season. The junior running back had 35 rushing yards last week and leads the team with 515 yards. The receiving core has two players with 200 or more yards. Cortez Graham Jr. has reached 50 receiving yards in six games this season and has netted 566 yards. Jamari Hawkins is just behind with 431 yards. The Memphis offense reported 405 yards last week. They are averaging 439 yards per game.

The Tigers' defense is a strength. They have contained a majority of the opposition, including 26 conceded against FAU and seven against Tulsa. The defense had trouble last week against a potent offense, squandering 564 total yards in the win. They are keeping teams to an average of 363 yards per game. Defensive back Drue Watts has 50 tackles. The pass defense is ranked 92nd, and the rush defense is 50th.

Memphis is averaging 37.6 points on the year, ranking them 16th. The Tigers are conceding an average of 19.9 points, good for 32nd.

Rice Ends Slide In Home Win

The Rice Owls are seeking their third conference win of the season. Rice was 3-1 after four games, but stumbled once conference play began. They dropped a home clash against FAU and were smacked with an ugly 61-13 road loss against UTSA two games ago. Next, the Owls answered with a competitive performance in a 37-34 home win against Connecticut in a meeting that had the Owls marked as big 10-point dogs. The Owls are 1-3 in AAC play and have covered the spread in three conference games.

Chase Jenkins has been decent under center on an offense that usually attempts fewer than 20 passes per game. Jenkins managed 191 passing yards last week and posted 744 passing yards and a 5:1 TD to INT ratio on the year. He is mobile and has added 332 rushing yards.

Rice runs more than most teams in the FBS. Quinton Jackson is capable of mammoth numbers. The junior RB has surpassed 100 yards in three games this season, including 132 yards in the win last week. The junior RB has amassed 655 rushing yards on the year. Daelen Alexander is also solid, netting 379 yards.

Rice only has one player with more than 200 yards, Drayden Dickmann. The sophomore WR brought in 30 receiving yards last week and has managed 292 receiving yards on the year. The Rice offense had one of its best outputs last week, posting 491 yards. They are averaging 376 yards per game.

The Owls' defense is a bit better than the offense. They had the disastrous effort against UTSA a few weeks ago, where they gave up 61 points, but have contained the opposition in most games.  The Owls conceded 449 total yards last week and are squandering an average of 421 yards per game. Andrew Awe leads the team with 58 combined tackles. The pass defense is placed 111th, while the rush defense is not any better,  standing 102nd.

Rice is scoring an average of 24.7 points on the season, rating them 92nd. The Owls are squandering an average of 32 points, positioning them 119th in the country.

Memphis vs. Rice Pick

Spread Pick for Memphis vs. Rice

  • Rice Owls +13.5 (5 units)

The Memphis Tigers are a great team, but they lost their previous road game. This could be a trap game. Memphis could be looking past Rice and onto its next game, which is a showdown against a Tulane squad that has lost just one game and stands atop the conference. The Rice Owls have momentum after an upset home win against Connecticut last week. They were 10-point dogs in the win.

Furthermore, Rice has a dynamite rushing offense that will keep them in this game. They are averaging a stunning 258 yards per game, ranking them sixth in the entire country. This is key in this matchup against the Tigers' defense that had no answer for the run last week, surrendering 295 rushing yards. It will be hard to score enough to cover this big number, considering Memphis opts for the run in most of its offensive plays.

Over/Under Pick for Memphis vs. Rice

  • Over 50 (5 units)

I expect a barrage of scoring. Memphis has a potent offense that is consistently producing. They have scored 32 or more points in six of their eight games on the season. This includes 55 points on the road against FAU. Remember, this Owls squad gave up 61 points a few weeks ago and stands near the bottom of the country in pass and rush defense

In addition, the Tigers' defense has been shaky recently. They have conceded 31 or more points in three of their past five games, including 31 points in their previous road game against a subpar UAB team. The Rice offense posted 37 points last week, its best output of the season. They have scored 31 or more in two of their past three home games. The over is a convincing 5-2 in the Owls’ past seven games.
