Memphis Is Rolling

Memphis arrives in Birmingham with a perfect record and a top-25 ranking, powered by a multidimensional offense and a defense that’s quietly climbed into the national top tier. Quarterback Brendon Lewis has been the catalyst, throwing for 1,269 yards, 8 touchdowns, and 4 interceptions while rushing for 420 yards and 7 scores. His dual-threat ability has kept defenses off-balance, especially in the red zone, where Memphis converts at an 89.3% clip. Running backs Sutton Smith and Gregory Desrosiers Jr. have combined for over 750 rushing yards and 10 touchdowns, giving the Tigers a reliable ground game that complements their vertical passing attack.

The receiving corps is led by Cortez Braham, who’s averaging 17.0 yards per catch with 5 touchdowns, and Jamari Hawkins, who adds another deep threat with 349 yards on just 20 receptions. Memphis averages 40.5 points per game, ranking 13th nationally, and has scored 30+ points in every outing. The offensive line has allowed just 12 sacks, and the Tigers rank top-25 in yards per play and third-down conversions. Penalties have been minimal, and the team has committed only 7 turnovers, showing discipline and efficiency across the board. With Lewis operating at peak form, Memphis has the tools to stretch UAB’s defense and control tempo from the opening drive.

Defensively, the Tigers have been just as impressive, allowing only 16.2 points per game and ranking 16th nationally in scoring defense. Linebackers Sam Brumfield and DeMarco Ward have combined for 59 tackles, 6 TFLs, and 3 sacks, while defensive backs Chris Bracy and Drue Watts have locked down the perimeter with 11 TFLs and 2 interceptions between them. Memphis has forced 12 turnovers, ranking 11th nationally, and their red zone defense has held opponents to a 62.5% scoring rate. With pressure up front and disciplined coverage on the back end, the Tigers have suffocated opponents and flipped field position consistently. If they maintain that level of play, Memphis could dominate both sides of the ball.

The Defense Is Struggling For UAB

UAB enters Week 8 in search of answers after a 53–33 loss to Florida Atlantic, their fourth defeat in six games. Quarterback Jalen Kitna has been a bright spot, throwing for 1,776 yards, 10 touchdowns, and 4 interceptions, completing 69.1% of his passes. The Blazers rank 9th nationally in passing yards per game at 310.6, but their run game has been nearly nonexistent, averaging just 73.4 yards per game—134th nationally. Running back Jevon Jackson leads the team with 388 yards and 3 touchdowns, but the offense has leaned heavily on short passing and yards after catch, with Solomon Beebe and Iverson Hooks combining for 624 receiving yards and 5 scores.

The Blazers will also have a new coach this week as Trent Dilfer was fired. Offensive coordinator Alex Mortensen has taken over as head coach on an interim basis.

Despite the aerial production, UAB has struggled to finish drives. They average 25.0 points per game, but rank outside the top 80 in red zone scoring and turnover margin. The Blazers have committed 8 turnovers and average 9.2 penalties per game, which has stalled momentum and flipped field position. Kitna has been sacked 13 times, and the offensive line has struggled to protect against pressure packages. UAB converts just 38.0% of third downs and has been forced into 20 fourth-down attempts, a sign of desperation rather than aggression. If they can’t establish balance or protect Kitna, the offense may sputter against Memphis’s top-tier defense.

Defensively, UAB has been overwhelmed. The Blazers allow 41.3 points per game, ranking 135th nationally, and give up 440.8 total yards, including 217.2 rushing yards—a dangerous weakness against Memphis’s run-heavy attack. Linebacker Devin Hightower leads the team with 42 tackles and an interception, but the unit has forced just 3 turnovers all season and ranks bottom-10 in red zone defense. The secondary has allowed 14 passing touchdowns, and opponents average 6.4 yards per play against them. With poor tackling, limited pressure, and a tendency to give up explosive plays, UAB will need a near-perfect effort to contain Memphis’s offense and stay competitive in this rivalry game.

Memphis vs UAB Pick

Memphis vs UAB Spread Pick

  • Memphis -21.5 (5 Units)

Memphis -21.5 is a sharp position in a game where the Tigers hold decisive advantages in quarterback play, defensive efficiency, and overall execution. Brendon Lewis has accounted for 15 total touchdowns, and the Tigers average 40.5 points per game with top-25 marks in yards per play and third-down conversions. UAB’s defense, meanwhile, ranks 135th nationally in scoring, allowing over 41 points per game and struggling to contain both the run and the pass. With Sutton Smith and Gregory Desrosiers Jr. anchoring a ground game that’s racked up 750+ yards, Memphis is built to control tempo and wear down a Blazers front that’s allowed 217.2 rushing yards per game.

On the other side, UAB’s offense is one-dimensional and turnover-prone. Jalen Kitna has thrown for over 1,700 yards, but the Blazers average just 73.4 rushing yards per game, making them predictable and vulnerable against Memphis’s top-20 scoring defense. The Tigers have forced 12 turnovers and rank top-10 in red zone stops, while UAB has committed 8 turnovers and ranks bottom-80 in red zone scoring. With Memphis dominating field position and possessing the more complete roster, this sets up as a game where the Tigers can build a lead early and extend it through all four quarters.

Memphis vs UAB Over/Under Pick

  • Over 62 (4 Units)

Over 62 is a strong play in a matchup where Memphis’s explosive offense meets a UAB defense that’s struggled to get stops all season. The Tigers average 40.5 points per game and have scored 30+ in every contest, while UAB allows 41.3 points per game and ranks near the bottom nationally in both rushing and red zone defense. With Brendon Lewis leading a balanced, high-efficiency attack and UAB’s Jalen Kitna capable of generating chunk plays through the air, this game sets up for a high-possession, high-scoring script. Even a modest showing from the Blazers could help push this total over the number.
