Memphis is Still Undefeated
The Memphis Tigers have one realistic goal in mind this season, and that is to be the most impressive Group of Five team, that will lead to a spot in the 12-team College Football Playoff. Boise State and Tulane are two other big names in the race, but if the Tigers can continue to run the table they will force the committee's hands into letting them in. In their last game against Arkansas, the Razorbacks fumbled away a chance to close the game, allowing Memphis to steal a win as a heavy dog.
Brendon Lewis is their starting quarterback, and he is certainly a veteran in college football as this is his sixth season in the NCAA. He was on Colorado's roster for three seasons, then played for Nevada in each of the last two years before transferring to Memphis for his last year of eligibility. He has good size at 6'3, and has 807 passing yards with a 3-2 TD-INT ratio. He is a mobile quarterback with 293 rushing yards, but cannot beat out his teammate, Sutton Smith, who is already up to 394 rushing yards through four games.
Cortez Braham Jr. is their top receiver, he is a 6'2 senior who followed over his quarterback from Nevada and leads his new team with 16 catches for 255 yards and two touchdowns this season. The defense has 11 sacks and six interceptions on the season, with their most impressive defensive effort coming from linebacker Sam Brunfield who is up to three sacks.

Owls Open League Play
The Florida Atlantic Owls can play their first American Athletic Conference game at home this season, and will have a chance to make a big splash against Memphis. The Tigers are undefeated and looking to make a run to the College Football Playoff as the best team outside the major conferences, but FAU can spoil that on Saturday. It is difficult to advance to the CFP with multiple losses, meaning FAU is probably hunting for a bowl game as their best-case scenario.
The Owls lost two of their three games, going down to Maryland and FIU, both on the road. Their lone win came from a team in the Sub-Division, as they took down Florida A&M. Their quarterback this season is Caden Veltkamp, who is in his first season with the team after spending three seasons with Western Kentucky. He has great size at 6'6 and 240 pounds, and finished last season with a 25-10 TD-INT ratio. This year, he has 880 yards with an 8-7 TD-INT ratio. Gemari Sands is their top tailback, the sophomore has 232 yards on the ground so gar, but has yet to find the endzone.
Easton Messer is their top receiving threat, the 5'9 redshirt junior also followed his quarterback, as he played the last three seasons for Western Kentucky. This year, he has 28 grabs for 232 yards and a touchdown. Their defense has four sacks on the year from four different players, and the team has yet to grab their first interception of the season.
Memphis vs. Florida Atlantic Prediction and Picks
Spread Pick for Memphis vs. Florida Atlantic
- Florida Atlantic +13.5 (5 units)
Too many points here. This is the conference opener, in Florida Atlantic, on ESPN2, and the Owls are getting 13.5 points. Florida Atlantic will get this cover and will play much tougher than expected, as their backs are against the wall. Do not get blinded by Memphis' undefeated record; they should have lost last weekend if Arkansas could just hold on to the ball late and not fumble while trying to punch in a game-clinching touchdown. Florida Atlantic took two losses so far this year, but both were on the road. Veltkamp is a big quarterback at 6'6, and he threw 25 touchdowns last season for Western Kentucky. Memphis might get the win here, but this will not be a blowout. Take the Owls with the points.
Take Florida Atlantic with the points.
Over/Under Pick for Memphis vs. Florida Atlantic.
- Under 62.5
Each team has a new quarterback who transferred in. The top receiver for each team is a transfer, and both teams are playing their first conference game under bright lights in a nationally televised game. This will be much lower scoring than expected. The total and spread calls for Memphis to score 40-some points, which they have not done in the past three weeks, and scored 28 against Troy. Florida Atlantic will put up a bigger fight on the defensive end, and we will see each coaching staff playing more conservatively to start their conference season with a win.
Take the under.
