Memphis vs Tulane Picks, Prediction, Odds, and Line Movement for Friday October 16 2026

Memphis visits Tulane on Friday night with an offensive advantage that is difficult to ignore. The Tigers have generated points and efficient gains much more consistently than the Green Wave, and their recent 38-13 victory over UAB reinforced that they can create separation without needing an unusually high turnover count. Tulane retains the benefit of playing at Yulman Stadium, but its struggling offense puts additional stress on a defense facing one of the more productive units in the American Conference.

The number is important. Memphis has been priced around a touchdown, a spread that asks the Tigers to do more than simply win. This matchup is about whether their early-down efficiency can build a second-score lead before Tulane can dictate the tempo with a lower-possession game.

Memphis vs Tulane Preview

Memphis has made its offensive strength clear through the opening half of the season. One independent play-by-play evaluation placed the Tigers among the national leaders in expected points added per snap, while the offense has scored around 37 points per game. Those indicators measure slightly different things, but both suggest that Memphis is capable of creating successful plays repeatedly rather than relying on occasional long touchdowns.

That sustained efficiency is especially important on the road. A team that can move the chains on early downs is less dependent on field position, crowd conditions or a perfect special-teams performance. Memphis should be able to challenge Tulane with a combination of rushing success and passing opportunities off favorable down-and-distance situations.

Tulane has experienced the opposite pattern. The Green Wave have struggled to create consistent offensive success and are coming off a 20-17 loss to Army. That result was not a blowout, but it illustrated the challenge of playing an entire game without reliable explosive production. Tulane can defend well enough to keep opponents uncomfortable, yet each wasted offensive possession increases the burden on its defense.

The Green Wave's best route is to reduce Memphis' total number of possessions. Sustained drives, productive rushing plays and avoidance of costly penalties can give Tulane a chance to make the Tigers operate with limited margin for error. The problem is that a conservative offense cannot simply take time off the clock; it must also produce first downs and points. Otherwise, Memphis gets the ball back with the same opportunities it would have had in a faster game.

Matchup Breakdown

Memphis has the more complete offensive toolkit. Its passing game can punish safeties that move closer to the line, while the threat of an effective ground attack prevents Tulane from treating every series as an obvious passing situation. If the Tigers stay ahead of schedule on first down, a 6.5-point spread is not especially daunting: two touchdown drives may create a lead Tulane's offense will struggle to erase.

Tulane's defense still has a say. The Green Wave have allowed roughly 23 points per game, and a disciplined red-zone performance could produce a much tighter contest than season scoring averages indicate. For a road favorite, settling for field goals can quickly turn an apparently controlled game into a late-possession cover decision.

The other concern for Memphis is game-state complacency. A team with a one-touchdown lead can become conservative while trying to avoid turnovers, and Tulane may need only one successful drive to land inside the number. That is why laying more than a touchdown is less appealing than finding the earlier -6.5 quote.

On the other side, Tulane must demonstrate more than a willingness to be patient. Its attack has to threaten enough of the field to stop Memphis from crowding the line of scrimmage. Without that balance, the Green Wave are likely to face repeated third downs and give away the very time-of-possession advantage they need.

Memphis vs Tulane Line Movement

Memphis opened around -6.5 and has been listed as high as -7 in later quotes. The total is less uniform across data sources, with one market comparison showing a drop from 54.5 to 53.5 while the earlier captured board still carried 55.5. These are different snapshots, not evidence that every sportsbook moved in exactly the same direction.

The half-point from -6.5 to -7 matters. A Memphis win by seven covers the former and pushes the latter. Betting the favorite is therefore a more appealing proposition at -6.5, particularly in a road game against a defense with enough quality to avoid a complete collapse.

Best Bet: Memphis -6.5

The selection is Memphis -6.5 or better. The Tigers' offensive efficiency and scoring depth create an advantage over a Tulane offense that has struggled to keep up with capable opponents. If Memphis wins first down and turns its scoring opportunities into touchdowns, the Tigers should build enough margin to clear the spread.

The wager becomes less attractive at -7.5 or above. Tulane's ability to defend in the red zone and potentially shorten the game makes a one-touchdown finish plausible, even if Memphis is the better team. A late injury to a key offensive contributor would also call for reassessment. At -6.5, Memphis is the preferred side.

Prediction: Memphis 31, Tulane 20
