Miami Seeking to Earn Second Straight Win

Miami bounced back from a loss to Louisville as they rolled past Stanford at home in their previous contest last Saturday. The Hurricanes improved to 6-1 overall and stand 2-1 in the ACC, leaving the seventh in the conference standings. Against Stanford, Miami found themselves down 7-0 after the opening quarter and was even at seven at the half before breaking the game open in the second half. The Hurricanes outscored the Cardinals 35-0 in the second half en route to the win. Miami racked up a 404-144 advantage in total offense, picked up 25 first downs while allowing eight, controlled the clock by a 36:42 to 23:18 margin and forced a pair of turnovers while not committing any in the game.

On the season, the Hurricanes are 38th in the nation in passing offense with 256.7 yards per game. Miami stands 69th in rushing offense by piling up 154.4 yards per game on the ground. Mustangs Hoping to Spring Upset

SMU was locked in a defensive struggle on the road against Wake Forest and lost on a long field goal at the final gun. The Mustangs dropped to 5-3 overall and stand tied for fourth in the ACC with a 3-1 mark in conference play on the year. Against Wake Forest, SMU trailed 3-0 after the opening quarter and 10-6 at the half before regrouping to lead 12-10 after three quarters. The ensuing extra point was blocked, which proved critical later in the game. SMU forced a Wake Forest turnover deep in the red zone but was unable to get a first down that could have run out the clock. Instead, the Demon Deacons kicked a 50-yard field goal as time expired to send the Mustangs to defeat. SMU was beaten 301-246 in total offense, gave up 19 first downs while picking up eight and lost time of possession by a 32:22 to 27:38 margin in the game. Those numbers overshadowed the fact that they had five takeaways as they also committed three turnovers in the loss.

The Mustangs enter this game 33rd in the FBS in passing offense as they average 266 yards per game through the air while they are tied for 106th in rushing offense with 122 yards per game. SMU is 51st in the nation in scoring offense as they put up 31.4 points per game while they are 43rd in scoring defense by allowing an average of 21.4 points per game. Kevin Jennings is 181 of 273 passing for 2,119 yards with 17 touchdowns and eight interceptions while ranking fifth on the team with 32 rushing yards and a score this season. Ty Hawkins is one of one for eight yards plus 12 rushing yards as the backup. T.J. Harden leads the team on the ground with 109 carries for 456 yards and five scores. Chris Johnson Jr. (42 carries, 314 yards, three TD), Derrick McFall (17 carries, 79 yards, TD) and Dramecko Green (18 carries, 55 yards, TD) are also in the mix on the ground. Romello Brinson leads the team with 37 catches for 515 yards and three scores on the year. Jordan Hudson (26 receptions, 315 yards, three TD), Jalen Cooper (15 grabs, 271 yards, two TD), Yamir Knight (26 catches, 251 yards, two TD) and tight end RJ Maryland Jr. (19 catches, 218 yards, two TD) are other targets over 200 receiving yards this season. Collin Rogers is 12 of 12 on extra point attempts and one of four on field goals with a long of 43 this season. Sam Keltner has hit 17 of 19 extra point attempts and nine of 13 field goal attempts with a long of 51 on the year.

Green (undisclosed) and Rogers (undisclosed) are both questionable here.

Miami vs. SMU Prediction

Spread Pick for Miami vs. SMU

  • Miami -11.5 (4 units)

Miami rebounded from the loss to Louisville with a big second half to bury Stanford, though it was a slow start. The Hurricanes have to watch out for the turnover bug that plagued them against Louisville as they threw four picks in that contest. SMU has forced 20 turnovers this season, though they have coughed the ball up 13 times themselves on the season. The Mustangs have to be better at protecting the ball, but dealing with a Hurricanes defense that can take the ball away is a bad mix for them. Miami found their swagger again in the second half against the Cardinal and after seeing SMU struggle to move the ball against Wake Forest, you have to fade them here. Take the Hurricanes on the road as a result.

Over/Under Pick for Miami vs. SMU

  • Under 50.5 (4 units)

Miami comes in having seen the under post a 4-3 mark in their seven games on the year. The Hurricanes stayed under the total in their lone road contest this season, combining for 50 points to stay under the number of 54.5 in a six-point win over Florida State on October 4. SMU enters this game having stayed under the number in six of their eight games on the year. The Mustangs have turned in five unders in their last six games, including three of their four home games this season. Their lone over at home came in a 48-45 shootout loss to Baylor back on September 6. Given how these teams are fairly solid defensively, look for this contest to wind up short of the number, barring a couple defensive or special teams scores.
