Key Matchups for Michigan vs. Maryland

Long shot at the playoffs

Michigan is 8-2, but they are ranked just 18th in the latest College Football Playoff rankings on Nov. 18. An early loss to Oklahoma (24-13) and at USC (31-13) has hampered their changes, though they have won four straight since the USC loss and if they beat No. 1 Ohio State in the season finale (OSU hasn't beaten them since 2019), then the playoffs should become a reality. Beating Maryland shouldn't be an issue as long as they don't look ahead. But they've not been impressive in their last two wins against Northwestern (24-22) on the road last week and Purdue (21-16 as a 21-point favorite).

They needed a 31-yard field goal from Dominic Zvada as time expired to defeat the Wildcats. Jordan Marshall ran for 142 yards and two TDs, but left with an injury. Bryce Underwood struggled at quarterback, completing 21 of 32 for 280 yards with no TDs and two picks. Marshall has 871 yards rushing and 10 TDs (6.1ypc). He's considered questionable with a shoulder injury. Underwood is completing 61.5% of his passes for 1,951 yards with seven TDs and five INT. He also has 302 yards rushing and five scores.

The defense has been the key to the team, allowing just 298.1 yards per game overall and 202 yards against the pass (45th). Edge Derrick Moore is having a strong season with 8.5 sacks and two forced fumbles.

Locksley back next season at Maryland

New Maryland AD Jim Smith wrote an open letter to the fans this week, and it wasn't what Terps fans were hoping for. Despite losing six straight games, Locksley will return for his eighth season. Last week, Maryland could produce just two field goals against Illinois and fell 24-6 on the road. Maryland had been competitive in the first three games of the losing streak, but in the last three, it has been blown out by a combined 73 points.

True freshman QB Malik Washington has hit a bit of a rookie wall, especially in terms of accuracy as he completed just 25 of 46 passes for 238 yards with no TDs and a pick against the Illini. Overall, the 6-5 freshman is ocmpleting 57.9% of his passes for 2,294 yards with 13 TDs and seven INTs. He also has 269 rushing yards with four TDs. Maryland hasn't given Washington much help in the rushing game as they rank 118th in yards per game at 110.6. WR Shaleak Knotts leads the Terps with 496 yards receiving with 32 catches.

Defensively, has a lot of young talent led by Edge Sidney Stewart, who has six sacks.

Michigan vs. Maryland Final Score Prediction

  • Michigan 38-Maryland 10

Michigan might be missing its top two running backs, but it doesn't matter. Maryland is a mess, and it won't matter that Locksley is returning next season. He has a young team that appears to be worn down at this point, mentally and physically. Underwood is a good enough runner to control the ground attac,k and they have plenty of depth at that spot. They should also get more in the air against a pass defense that allows 221.1 yards per game, which ranks 69th in the nation. Despite the injuries, go with over because Michigan will score enough points against a mediocre defense to go over the total.
