Michigan readies for first test of 2025
The Michigan Wolverines took care of business in week one, rolling to a comfortable 34-17 home win over New Mexico on Saturday night. The 14th-ranked Wolverines jumped out to a 14-0 lead after one quarter and rode their defense to an opening night win. They now ready for their first major test of the season on the road against the Sooners.
"I wanted consistent energy throughout the game. I felt like there was consistent energy from snap one all the way to the end," head coach Sherrone Moore said. "It didn't matter who was in there. Guys played physical. Guys played fast. Yeah, there's things we've got to clean up and we've got to get better at, and we know that. The best part about it is our kids know that. They understand the standard of Michigan football, and they're as disappointed at times than anybody else. They're more disappointed because they're the ones putting in the work, and our coaches are the ones putting in the work. They know the standard that they want to uphold, and we know what we want to uphold, so we're going to work to get better."
The Wolverines’ offense was led by freshman quarterback Bryce Underwood, making his first start for the Maize and Blue. Underwood completed 21 passes and threw for a Wolverines’ freshman record 251 yards. Alabama transfer running back Justice Haynes had 159 yards and three touchdowns in his first game as a Wolverine. Tight end Marlin Klein had six catches for 93 yards and a touchdown. The six catches and yard total were both career-highs for the senior from Germany. Overall, the Wolverines finished with 452 yards of total offense. The Wolverines’ offense committed one turnover in the game on a fumble.
The Michigan defense had its imprint all over this game on Saturday. They harassed New Mexico’s pass game all night, recording seven quarterback hurries and three sacks. The Wolverines also had three interceptions in the game, one each by TJ Guy, Brandyn Hillman, and Cole Sullivan. The Wolverines had nine tackles for loss in the game. Overall, they held New Mexico to 267 yards of total offense, including 1.8 yards per carry on the ground.
Key Injuries: QB Mike Keene, RB John Volker, TE Hogan Hansen, QB Davis Warren, RB Bryson Kuzdzal, WR CJ Charleston, TE Jalen Hoffman, and RB Micah Ka’apana are all questionable.
Oklahoma looking for prime-time win
The Oklahoma Sooners took care of business in week one, dominating Illinois State 35-3 in Norman on Saturday night. Quarterback John Mateer, a transfer from Washington State, set a school record for most passing yards in a Sooner debut, surpassing Baker Mayfield’s record set back in 2015.
"Oh, it's awesome," Mateer said. "It's a blessing. You go in the record books in Game 1 — it's a super good feeling."
Mateer was precise, completing 30-of-37 passes for 392 yards and three touchdowns in the win. The 392 yards also marked a career-high for Mateer overall. Another transfer, wide receiver Keontez Lewis, from Southern Illinois, had nine catches for 119 yards and two scores. WR Deion Baker had seven catches for 88 yards, and converted linebacker Jaren Kanak, in his first game at tight end, finished with five catches for 90 yards. The Sooners shone in their first game under new offensive coordinator Ben Arbuckle, finishing with 495 yards of total offense.
The Sooners’ defense held Illinois State to just eight first downs in the game and 151 yards of total offense. Illinois State had just 34 yards passing in the game. They were just 1-for-11 on third down conversions. The Sooners had five tackles for loss in the game, including two sacks. Sammy Omosigho led the team with eight tackles, including a sack. Taylor Wein also chipped in with a sack for the Sooners.
Key Injuries: WR Jayden Gibson, WR Javonnie Gibson, WR KJ Daniels, TE Kaden Helms, RB Taylor Tatum, and RB Jaydn Ott are questionable.
Michigan vs. Oklahoma pick
Spread Pick for Michigan vs. Oklahoma
- Michigan +4.5 (4 units)
The 15th-ranked Sooners and 18th-ranked Wolverines are both trying to get back among the elite teams in college football. The Sooners have the edge offensively in this matchup, with a more experienced quarterback in Mateer. The Wolverines have the edge on defense, particularly with one of the strongest secondaries in the country. The Sooners will have the edge being at home in this game, but the Wolverines’ style should transfer well in a hostile environment, leaning heavily on their ground attack. Expect this game to be right throughout, with the Wolverines controlling the pace of play on the ground and the Sooners making more explosive plays. The line is slightly too high in this close contest, and I’ll take the 4.5 points with the Wolverines in what looks like a field goal game between two of College Football’s blueblood programs.
Take Michigan +4.5
Over/Under Pick for Michigan vs. Oklahoma
- Under 44.5 (4 units)
When the Wolverines are clicking, they are running the ball well and controlling the tempo of the game. They’ll come into Norman on Saturday night looking to do just that. Haynes looked like an elite back in week one, and the Wolverines’ offensive line looked up for the challenge this season. The Sooners will try to combat that with a pass-happy offense that had nearly 400 yards through the air in the season opener. They’ll find things more challenging against the physical Wolverines’ defense on Saturday night. This game will be slower-paced and controlled by the Wolverines.
