Key Matchups and Handicap

These teams met last season with Texas earning a convincing 31-12 win in Ann Arbor, but the landscape could not be more different heading into this bowl. Michigan has endured a turbulent offseason, parting ways with Sherrone Moore and installing Biff Poggi as interim head coach. Former Utah head coach Kyle Whittingham is waiting in the wings, but Poggi is known for aggressive game plans and creativity, especially in high-profile spots.

Texas closed the regular season with a strong home win over Texas AandM, but the Longhorns are dealing with major personnel losses. Seven of the top eleven defenders are expected to miss this game, along with running backs Quintrevion Wisner and CJ Baxter. Those absences loom large against a Michigan offense that should be close to full strength.

Bryce Underwood is expected to play at quarterback for Michigan, and the Wolverines should have most of their starting offensive unit available. Given that nearly all of the impactful opt-outs are on the defensive side of the ball for both teams, this sets up as a rare bowl matchup where offensive continuity outweighs defensive familiarity.

Playing an over in bowl season is always uncomfortable, but this matchup checks several boxes. Michigan’s offense may actually benefit from changes on the coaching staff, while Texas is trying to patch together a defense that has been gutted by opt-outs and injuries. Poggi is not the type of coach to play this conservatively, and Sarkisian will still look to score points rather than sit on a lead.

  • Texas has been backed by the majority of public spread tickets throughout the week.
  • The total has climbed from the mid-40s to 48.
  • Michigan has consistently attracted buyback once the spread reached seven.

Key Injuries and Notes (MICH vs TEX)

  • TEX: Seven of the top eleven defensive players are expected to miss this game.
  • TEX: Running backs Quintrevion Wisner and CJ Baxter are out.
  • MICH: Bryce Underwood is expected to play at quarterback.

ATS and Total Picks

  • ATS: Michigan +6.5
  • Total: Over 48

Final Score Prediction

Texas 31, Michigan 27

How to Bet

This game is best approached by targeting the number rather than the outright winner. Bowl season volatility makes live betting attractive, but locking in Michigan plus the points early provides protection if this turns into a one-score game late.
