Minnesota vs Oregon prediction

The No. 7 Oregon Ducks (8-1, 5-1 B10) will host the Minnesota Golden Gophers (6-3, 4-2 B10) on Friday in a Big Ten showdown. Which team will grab this victory in this Minnesota vs. Oregon prediction? The Ducks are 25.5-point favorites, with the total set at 44.5, according to ESPNBet.

Oregon enters on a three-game winning streak after narrowly escaping Iowa with an 18–16 victory. On the other side, Minnesota is coming off a bye week following a 23–20 overtime win against Michigan State.

Can the Gophers compete?

The Golden Gophers aren’t getting much national attention, or even respect within the Big Ten, despite holding a winning record under head coach P.J. Fleck. They've won three of their last four games, including a 23-20 overtime win over Michigan State before their bye.

Offensively, the Gophers have struggled, ranking 120th in the nation with just over 313 yards per game. They sit 123rd in rushing and 95th in passing. Quarterback Drake Lindsey, a redshirt freshman, has shown promise with 10 touchdown passes and six interceptions, primarily managing the offense rather than driving it. The ground game has carried the load, led by Sean Ijeboi (384 rushing yards, 4.7 YPC, 2 TDs) and Darius Taylor (354 rushing yards, 4.4 YPC, 1 TD).

Defensively, Minnesota has been much stronger. The Gophers rank 21st in the FBS, allowing under 312 yards per game. They’re giving up only 108.1 rushing yards per game (21st) and 203.4 passing yards per game (46th). They also rank 39th in scoring defense, allowing 21.6 points per game, while their offense averages just 23.8 points per game.

Ducks avoid scare against Iowa

Under head coach Dan Lanning, the Oregon Ducks are once again legitimate national championship contenders. Their only loss came against Indiana on October 11th, a 30–20 setback. Since then, they’ve defeated Rutgers (56–10), Wisconsin (21–7), and Iowa (18–16).

Sophomore quarterback Dante Moore from Detroit, Michigan, leads the offense with 1,884 passing yards, 19 touchdowns, and five interceptions. Moore has a lot of help as the Ducks feature perhaps the deepest and explosive backfield in the country, with Noah Whittington leading the team with 551 rushing yards, and averaging 8.1 yards per carry with four touchdowns. There’s also Jordan Davison, who has 404 rushing yards and 10 touchdowns, while averaging 6.8 yards per carry. Dierre Hill Jr., a freshman, leads the team with 9.3 yards per carry, adding 402 yards and four touchdowns. Collectively, these playmakers power an offense ranked 13th nationally, averaging 472 yards per game, including 239.7 rushing yards (6th) and 38.7 points per game (9th).

Defensively, Oregon has been elite, ranking 3rd in total defense, allowing just 239 yards per game, and 6th in scoring defense, surrendering only 13.8 points per game. They could be without LB Devon Jackson on the defensive end. On offense, they could be without injured receivers Gary Bryant Jr and Dakorien Moore.

ATS Pick for Minnesota vs. Oregon

  • Minnesota +25.5 (5 units)

Minnesota has suffered two blowout road losses in Big Ten play, 42–3 at Ohio State and 41–3 at Iowa, so it’s understandable that this line is inflated. However, the Gophers have had extra preparation time, and Oregon has looked a bit sluggish in recent weeks, beating Wisconsin 21–7 and Iowa 18–16.

Even though Oregon was at home against Wisconsin, they now face a more balanced Minnesota team. While I expect Oregon to win, P.J. Fleck’s squad deserves some respect here. Oregon also has USC on deck next week, so the Ducks’ main goal here is to win and stay healthy, but Minnesota will be motivated to go all out. Take the Golden Gophers to cover.

Total Pick for Minnesota vs. Oregon:

  • Over 44.5 (3 units)

While I’m not expecting an offensive explosion, this total feels a bit too low. There are several ways this game could go over, and something like 31–14 or 35–10 feels realistic.

Oregon should be able to put up points, and with such a low number, Minnesota only needs a few positive drives to push it over.

Keep in mind, Oregon faces USC next week and Washington to close the season, so if they build a comfortable lead, we could see reserves playing on defense late, leaving the door open for a backdoor score.
